2019 Recruiting - Football

Caleb Johnson fills a position of need. Good chance he and Floyd will be starters next year

And Johnson will have 3 years of eligibility while at Texas so these two have the chance to be quite the duo for Orlando

That's fantastic. I hope Caleb and Jacoby are impact players next fall.

At 6-foot-1, 215 pounds, Johnson is ranked as the No. 3 junior college outside linebacker in the country, per 247Sports Composite.

He is fast. Maybe not quite as fast as Gary Johnson but hopefully a little better at positioning and not biting on fakes. Gary's good season (+ the hole on the depth chart) is what opened Caleb's eyes to coming here.

Both defensive JUCOs Caleb and DE Jacoby Jones are January enrollees

Inside Texas on Johnson

How he fits at Texas: Johnson is a quick fix to the very real problem that is Gary Johnson’s forthcoming graduation. He’s got similar size, great change of direction and speed even if it’s not quite at Johnson’s unworldly level. As a JUCO he already has valuable experience in college schemes and is the kind of “cover him up and let him run wild” rover that Todd Orlando’s D can really maximize. Shorter but quick guys like this are easy to find now but they don’t typically come with two years of college ball experience. – Ian Boyd

Coach says: Strengths — Arrives at the ball in a damned hurry with something to prove. Appears compactly built and thick through the lower body. Takes on blockers and runners willingly and appears quite fearless. Great range and shows some great motor plays in limited tape. Seems assignment sound and delivers a bit shock on his hits. 41 tackles with 8.5 for loss with 5.5 sacks seems about right based on what I see on film. Diagnoses plays quickly. A blitz weapon. Ready to transfer in spring 2019. Self-reported GPA pretty decent. Areas for Improvement/Concern — De-committed to Iowa State. Not much film on his pass coverage or ball skills. Would like to see this guy playing a little heavier but if he’s Gary Johnson 2.0, I would not care if they left him at this weight.

JUCO RB Rhamondre Stevenson to ou

I hope our confidence in what is happening with RB recruiting is justified. Because Stevenson is a good player and it seems to me his path to PT would be much easier here. And we have just otherwise proven we can land good JUCOs.

The depth is a little sobering there. Hope they have something in the pipeline... Shhhhhh?

Maybe the JUCO to OU couldn't get in the door here grade-wise. I agree with you that playing time would seem to be available here. Who is going to step into Watson's role? He carried the ball quite a bit.

I have a feeling you are going to see another grad transfer like Watson, 4 guys in the depth chart is not good for business, we keep taking less talented guys, and keep getting less than ideal results. We need more guys like Ingram. However, getting a RB like Sanders is the most ideal as he is on the level of Ricky and Earl. I can't remember if Texas has ever got a RB who was considered the best in the country?

I imagine Earl was on top (or else it didn't take long to call roll in the proverbial class of his own) when he came out. Back in the 70's a kid moved to Laredo (where I went to Junior/Senior high) from Palestine. He told me about an incredible running back in their district. Said the kid had to split his shorts and add material to fit his thighs in there. I remember thinking it was a bit hyperbolic. Turned out to be Earl.

Malcolm Brown and Johnathan Gray were both top backs. We landed them in back to back years if memory serves me correctly. They just didn't pan out quite the way we hoped. Texas can recruit RBs we are just in a bit of a lull.

The owner of 247 thinks Javonne is top 10
Not in-state, but nationally

Another note, it looks like all our current verbal commits will sign early except probably Shepherd
