2019 Recruiting - Football

I feel like Bru and Trey are leading us on like we have a chance. You know, like the hot girl finally gives you her phone number and tells you to call her tomorrow. All excited about it then you call her at the number she gave you only for it to be some random person. Crushed!

JS going through some drills with his trainer
He said he ran a 4.82 (at 327 lbs) at the Opening, but seems impossible. He does, however, scoot downfield very well for a guy that size -- can see it here

Twitter chatter tonight says Sanders to UGA, idk

And, thus, Cain to Texas?
The current trendy pick is for him to PSU, but we will see. His announcement is 10:30 tomorrow

One thing for certain, this staff keeps pushing to the end. I think it was Grandy last year who flipped at the last second.

Bummer, but it makes sense. They have been a RB pipeline of late.

Agree, and lack of OL commits probably hurt us with both of them. Sure hope Shepherd signs tomorrow, would hate to only have 1 OL this class. I really didn't expect Hand to struggle as much as he did this year recruiting with all the hype about him. Giles and Hand need to put that coffee down, coffee is for closers...

EJ Holland says McCoy has options today -- Because he has already been admitted to both schools, he might not sign the NLI and could instead sign a financial aid agreement, which would effectively bind the school. Holland thinks McCoy (and family) might not be ready to decide/commit today.
He says "This should tell you that he is far from a USC lock."

As with all things, we will see.

Coach Beck spoke with the Cains last night.
The mom (who is in Dallas) is starting to think about the distance thing. Sounds like a PSU and Texas are the last 2 standing.

"As with all things, we will see."

David Gbenda 8am
Tyler Owens 8am
Marcus Tillman 9am
Noah Cain 10:30am
Kennedy Lewis 11:50am
Jordan Whittington 12:15pm
Marques Caldwell 1pm
Trey Sanders 1pm
Roschon Johnson 1:30pm
Myron Warren 1:30pm
Jared Wiley 4:30pm

Not sure about Cain and Sanders, has always seemed like Sanders would go first

I think he is still underrated

" .... At his best in open space, Whittington is tremendously shifty and elusive and displays good quickness and change of direction speed, which isn’t surprising given that he registered an elite 20-yard shuttle time of 4.07 seconds. When space isn’t readily available, Whittington has the vision necessary to find a create his own opportunities, which when paired with his ability to high-point and pluck the ball out of the air, has helped pave the way for his 46 receptions for 905 yards — an average of 19.7 per catch — and 12 touchdowns this season.

Whittington’s top-end speed isn’t quite as elite as his lateral quickness, but as his film reveals, he still has more than enough speed to turn on the jets and break free. He won’t rely solely upon his elusive ability, though. As is often the case when he’s utilized out of the backfield, Whittington is an especially physical talent capable and willing to lower his shoulder, thanks in large part to his college-ready frame at 6’1, 198 pounds. In person, Whittington quite simply looks the part of a developed running back, which he became at times this season to the tune of 512 yards and nine touchdowns on 31 attempts; good for an average of 16.5 yards per carry.

Between his ball-carrying and pass-catching efforts, Whittington is averaging 18.4 yards per touch this season....."

Do-it-all 4-star WR Jordan Whittington signs with Texas

" .... As an athlete, the hope is that he can grow some in the Texas strength and conditioning program because his verified testing numbers aren’t spectacular — a 4.71 40-yard dash, 4.3 shuttle, and a 32-inch vertical leap. Of course, those numbers are still solid and, more importantly, Adimora produced on offense as a junior with impressive top-end speed and short-area quickness on his junior film.

Like DeShon Elliott last season, Adimora always seemed to be in the right place as a junior in securing his seven interceptions. During his senior season, the question is whether he can continue to produce game-changing interceptions. No matter what happens, Adimora has already proven his acumen in reading the eyes of the quarterback and getting where he needs to be to suggest a significant football IQ.

With a hard-hitting tackling style, Adimora has the mentality and the physicality to come up in run support in or even play in the box, as he’s already close to 200 pounds and will likely to play at 205-210 pounds in college without losing his speed. At 6’1, he has an ideal frame for the position that helps make up for a lack of elite testing results. The easy comparison here is to Elliott, but Adimora is big enough and physical enough that he could fill the Lightning package role that Jason Hall held late in 2017 as an eraser near the line of scrimmage.

On offense, Adimora showed off the explosiveness that wasn’t elite in testing situations — it sounds like a cliche, but the guess here is that the Texas coaches see Adimora as a prospect who plays faster than he tests. He’s a unique combination of smooth and tough in the open field that makes him difficult to tackle and capable of taking short passes or handoffs for long touchdowns...."

Active 4-star Safety Chris Adimora signs with Texas

" .... Standing at 6’2, 202 pounds, Owens has the traits to fit right in at safety with the ability to transform into a hybrid outside linebacker in Texas’ Lighting Dime package if necessary, as detailed by Burnt Orange Nation’s Joe Hamilton.

“Owens has the versatility to play any position on the back-end of the defense and has the frame to potentially grow into an outside linebacker. He possesses striking speed and has that headhunter mentality when recognizing where the play is going.”

With striking speed and pursuit to the ball, Owens fits nicely with the numerous blitz packages defensive coordinator Todd Orlando utilizes. Freshman B.J. Foster excelled in a run-blitzing role this season. While Owens doesn’t possess the elite speed and ball skills that Foster has, he could be used in a similar role to that of Foster.

Hamilton also noted, “Something else that stands out about Owens game is that he’s able to move in space exceptionally well while reading the quarterbacks eyes. Quarterbacks at the high school level are intimidated by Owens presence and shy away from throwing the ball his way because of the amount of ground he covers in a hurry.”

High-upside 4-star S Tyler Owens signs with Texas

" ... The 6’6, 225-pounder spent his senior season playing quarterback for Temple, so it’s difficult to evaluate and project Wiley based on what he put on film this season. However, there are a few signs of quality athleticism in terms of elusiveness and top-end speed.

And it’s extremely positive that Wiley displayed some significant talent at the position — the fine motor skills and processing speed that helped Wiley at quarterback should also help him transition to playing tight end on a full-time basis. Playing quarterback also requires leadership from Wiley that translated to an 8-3 record at the 6A level.

When Wiley played tight end as a junior, he showed flashes of serious body control and ball skills that made him intriguing to the Texas staff despite an average offer list and athleticism that didn’t translate especially well in testing

A quarterback before playing tight end in 2017, Wiley is quite raw at the position, but his big frame and natural ability made him an understandable take for the Longhorns. He’ll need some time to develop his strength, in-line blocking ability, and route-running ability.

The bottom line is that previous staffs in Austin have struggled to even throw big bodies at the tight end position, often resorting to moving defensive players to the offensive side, just to fill out the depth. Head coach Tom Herman and his staff even did that with a 2017 signee, Rob Cummins...."

Athletic 3-star TE Jared Wiley signs with Texas
