THE OPENING FINALS BRIEFS
FRISCO —
Raves for new A&M coach
On the final day of The Opening Finals, Texas A&M added to an already-impressive 2019 recruiting haul.

Houston Madison senior defensive back Bobby Wolfe committed to the Aggies to become their second commitment in as many days. As of Tuesday evening, A&M had the No. 2 recruiting class in the country, according to 247Sports.com’s composite ranking.

It’s still far too early to see how new coach Jimbo Fisher will fare at A&M. But according to a couple of recruits at Nike’s premier summer event, the hire is already paying off on the recruiting trail.

“Jimbo’s a winner,” said Houston St. Pius X receiver Jalen Curry, who was committed to Fisher when he was at Florida State and has an offer from A&M. “He knows what he’s doing. He’s going to put his team in the best position to win. They definitely upgraded there.”

Wolfe's nonbinding pledge gave Fisher and the Aggies four current commitments who reached The Opening Finals in Frisco.

One of those players was Humble Atascocita offensive lineman Kenyon Green, a five-star prospect and the No. 1 player in the state according to 247Sports. Green said even though Fisher isn’t one to call or text, the new coaching staff has done a great job of communicating with him throughout the rercruiting process.

“With the new stuff, everybody’s getting in touch with me,” said Green, who hits up A&M assistant coach Jim Turner or graduate assistant Lee Grimes if needs to hear from someone on staff. “That’s real special to me. They care. When I go up there, it’s family.”

OU pledges triumph
Midway through the 7-on-7 championship at The Opening Finals on Tuesday, Oklahoma quarterback pledge Spencer Rattler could sense his squad was bound for victory.

His team comprised most of the seven Oklahoma pledges invited to the event at The Star in Frisco — the most of any college program — and had rolled over opponents throughout the weekend, building chemistry the players expect will translate to success in Norman.

By the time they prevailed at the end of the four-day event, the future Sooners all had a similar thought.

“This is only the beginning,”

Prestonwood Christian tight end Austin Stogner said.

Stogner was one of the several pass-catchers to find a rhythm with Rattler, who lives in Arizona and is the country’s No. 1 pro-style quarterback, according to 247Sports. The two connected on passes throughout The Opening Finals’ sessions, and after just a few days of working together, Stogner felt Rattler could already tell when he would cut, stop or go long on his routes.

In the end zone, Rattler often looked to Allen wide receiver Theo Wease Jr. and Hebron wide receiver Trejan Bridges, both Oklahoma pledges.

The team’s final score in the championship game perhaps exemplified their newfound timing and connections most. Rattler first hit Wease in motion for a touchdown on the goal line, and then hit a fade pass to a diving Stogner in the back of the end zone for the extra point.

Soon, they all stood atop the podium with Dallas Cowboys star running back Ezekiel Elliott and former TCU and NFL star LaDainian Tomlinson to celebrate what they hope was just their first title victory together.

“Oh yeah,” Wease said. “We’re definitely getting the national championship for sure.”

Not a word about Texas. The aggy comments stand for themselves, and 7 of the ou guys were from North Texas which Herman has abandoned.

Riley came in and OU had a great year. Having Baker helped immensely. This will be an interesting year. If they play like they usually do then we will have big problems from them.

Jimbo is Jimbo. A national championship and probably a personality that is very large to these recruits. Plus it's the SEC all over again. Going to be some momentum in the interim until the results on the field true-up the hype.

HERMAN HAS TO WIN THIS YEAR.

Aggsy will have a very mediocre year and probably take a step back next year. I expect them to have about an 8-4 season this year and 7-5 next year.

After that they will start to do a lot better, so Herman has the next two years to prove Texas is back. He needs two 10 win seasons and he needs to beat blOwU.

Gooners are a problem, they have a lot of talent, and Riley is a good offensive coach, I think he is a terrible defensive coach, but they do have talent there as well.

It still comes down to one thing, Texas has to step up and not rely of others falling back. If Texas takes care of it’s business, they will be back and nothing the aggsy or gooners can do about it.

I agree, this and next year aggy will be about the same with 7 maybe 8 wins. So the heat is on Herman to ramp it up and get 10 or more wins each year. 7 or 8 wins won’t get the attention needed. Then again, the B12 may begin to disband as early as 2021, so who knows what will happen.

There will be no disbanding until after the TV contracts are expired. Texas and Oklahoma will likely end up together in either the B1G or Pac 12, my guess is the easiest place to go is to take OSU blOwU and Tech to the Pac.
