2019 Recruiting - Football

Bobby Burton's take --

" .... Braun is not just any starting offensive lineman. He’s a first-team all-ACC selection at offensive guard. We all know how much Calvin Anderson helped the Horns a year ago. Yet Calvin was just third-team All-CUSA before coming to Texas.

It’s hard to fathom Texas getting a transfer of this quality. Of course there’s a reason for that. It’s never happened before, at least not to my knowledge. Braun gives the Horns’ OL three certain starters, to go along with Sam Cosmi and Zach Shackelford. A unit that before today looked like it could be promising but questionable, now looks like it will almost assuredly be a team strength. Braun doubles the number of first-team all-conference selections returning to the team for 2019. Caden Sterns on defense is the only other.

With the commitment of Braun, and the offer to juco lineman Willie Tyler earlier this week, it just goes to show how committed the Horns are to improving the team’s talent level by just about every means available to them....."

Hope Ingram will have his running cleats on because our line(s) will be top notch for years to come. Yessir:clap: .Hand was a really great hire.

Like Ron Dayne? He broke Ricky’s record, must have been a great back.
Or, maybe it was the o-line at Wisconsin.
Tongue in cheek of course, for the younger group.
A couple things helped Ron with breaking Ricky's record. First, he was the featured back for 4 years and he had a great line most of those years.

Second, Ricky wasn't even the featured back until his Jr. year. He was listed as a FB the first two years. Imagine if he was the man for four years...no way his record would ever have been broken.

Free Willie!

Orangebloods says Big Willie committed to Coach Hand on the spot last week after receiving his offer.

Also, I believe he is a 4-to-play-3. if so, then he is or will be a true sophomore.

He had always been a DL until they switched him to the OL just last season. And someone else says we tried to talk him into completing the course load necessary to allow him to transfer to us at this time -- although I have not seen this last part verified yet so its not certain if this is 100% accurate.

Story on Willie Tyler --

"As a senior defensive lineman for the Racine Lutheran High School football team during the 2016 season, Willie Tyler was just starting to discover how good he could be.

The 6-foot-7, 260-pound Tyler earned first-team All-Racine County honors after his first season as a full-time starter at defensive lineman that year. He was also a decent basketball player who fell one vote short of earning second-team All-County honors in that sport as a senior.

Tyler signed with Garden City Community College in Kansas in July 2017. But he balked when Garden City’s coaching staff wanted to convert him into an offensive lineman and he returned to Racine by the end of that July.

That might have been the end of the story of Tyler as an athlete. Instead, it was just the beginning. Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs, Iowa contacted Tyler about giving football another shot in January 2018 and he accepted.

This time, Tyler bought into playing offensive tackle and allowed just one sack after becoming a regular starting with the fifth game last season. He bulked up to 330 pounds after dedicating himself to weight lifting. He elevated his grade-point average to 3.3 after maintaining about a 2.5 GPA at Lutheran.

And now Tyler’s name is circulating prominently in the realm of major college football....."

At last--we're finally solid (and moderately deep) in the interior OL, with OGs/Cs like Braun, Kerstetter, Angilau, Shackelford, Okafor, Imade. It's an old lingering weakness that finally appears to be remedied (or just about there at the very least). But there's more: our 2019 and 2020 recruits bring to the table an even higher level of big athlete, on the average.

We should give a hand to the OL coach making this happen.

From Mack all the way through all of Charlie Strong. I think at one point under Charlie we had like 5 healthy scholarship OLs, yet he refused to go after JUCOs (except for one guy with shot knees Nickleson). The OL has been a complete and total disaster for us.

Absolutely agree, I believe he rushed for 990 as a FB as a freshman.
My point was Ron Dayne was above average, but with that line and commitment to run. No limits.
To mention him in the same breath talent wise to Ricky to me is ridiculous.

I view Mackovic's / Ricky's lines as good-to-very good, but not Wisconsin level. Wisconsin was the gold standard of OLs (back then at least).

Speaking of Earl in this thread, both at UT and with the Oilers (and Saints), he had decent/ok lines and mostly weak passing games. The whole defense knew the ball was going to Earl over and over and over. Earl didn't benefit from: (i) superior OLs (Dayne), or (ii) good OLs with a balanced passing game to take the pressure off of him + crafty play designs and offensive coordinating (Ricky).

So we pick up 5 OL this cycle. I thought aggy said we were light on OL? We pick up 4-5 next year too. Note to self: Aggy not credible source.
It wasn't just aggy. Plenty of folks were critical of the staff for not addressing the o-line. I guess it goes to show that TH and his staff really do read Hornfans for advice and suggestions.

When in need, our current staff / OL coach is able to go 5 or so states away to the upper Midwest and sign a high-end OL from Wisconsin--the mother load OL mine. Rather impressive, I'd say.

Kenyatta Watson will spend his spring break in Austin around the team to learn as much as possible before enrolling in June.

To expand upon this theme a bit, here is Gerry Hamilton's ("ESPN National Recruiting Analyst") personal rankings if the 2020 and 2021 in-state OL classes were combined. Can see how he (and others too) love the 2021 OLs. We are in close contact with 9 of these 11 -- two are already committed to us and two more (the twins) will be in Austin for Spring Practice Mar 15. Indeed, the Brockermeyers are looking more and more like a twofer (perhaps a threefer for us counting Luke). It seems only right we roster all 3 in, doesnt it?

Here, Parker Braun explains some of his reasons for the transfer

"When asked to explain his decision, grad school was the first reason that Braun gave. Braun has been serious about his education, three times earning academic All-ACC honors. He’ll graduate in May with a degree in literature, media and communication. He wanted to pursue a master’s in a liberal-arts field, and his choices at Tech were not to his liking. Braun said he’d like to study anthropology and has an idea of becoming a community-college professor when his football career is complete."

Transferring also “was an opportunity to play on a different team and test myself and my limits and see how good of a player I can be,” he said. “It’s also an opportunity to get more film against an entirely different schedule.”

Braun, 6-foot-3 and 280 pounds, said he needs to gain strength and weight to play in a pro-style offense. (Braun is working out at Tech by himself at the Campus Recreation Center, slinging weights with the student body.) Braun said he’s also considering a switch to center, which may help his NFL prospects. Guards are typically bigger than centers...."

Parker Braun explains his rationale for transferring

Hamilton's OL rankings from above:

Tommy Brockermeyer ‘21

T Savion Byrd ‘21
T Chad Lindberg
T Reuben Fatheree ‘21
T Jaylen Garth #HookEm
T/G Ty’kieast Crawford
T/G Damieon George
G Akinola Ogunbiyi #GigEm
C Logan Parr #HookEm
G Donovan Jackson ‘21
C James Brockermeyer ‘21

I think it would be terrific to sign both Brockermeyer kids. They bleed orange and no doubt they can both play.

And offering both might seal the deal
Right now, we've only offered one. And it looks like ou just offered James.
Maybe we will too when he visits? (Inside Texas thinks maybe even sooner than that)

I'm surprised the aggsy 247 guy hasn't crystal balled them to the agroids. He seems to think every top player in the country is going there. :lmao:
