2019 Recruiting - Football

Barring injury, I have no doubt Parker Braun will start, whether at Center or Guard. The moment Braun signed, he became our best OL.
 
For old timers, reminds me of the days when we would see the likes of Norm Bulaich, Chuck Bulness, Ross Montgomery running the hundred. I was waiting for the stadium tilt when any of that group ran the 220 the curve.

I do remember at the Lamar Redskin Relays at old Charlie Dyer Stadium, the prelims of the 220 got cancelled and Bulaich was so happy he did a flip running across the infield.

Do any HS meets have the "Fat Man Relay" anymore? Probably have to rename it.
 
Sabre, I'm sure you remember the DKR quote about Norm Bulaich: "Trying to tackle him is like trying to tackle a bowling ball."
And this from the master of tackling fundamentals.

I never thought of Norm as a "bowling ball" because he was over 6 ft. Haven't seen him in years, but I believe he was 6'2 or 6'4"
 
DKR didn't like Chachie Owens from Orange. Nobody knew why, because I don't think the guy had anyone that didn't like him. In 65 or 66, Texas hosted a huge, but pathetic but huge Indiana team. The offense couldn't move the ball against all that fat. Owens was about 5'10" and 225. DKR put him in the second half. Chachie ran for well over 100 yards and the O wore down the Indiana D in the heat. DKR might have said it about Owens, but I seriously doubt it. Can't think of any other candidates of that era.

That season started off with such promise. Jerry Gray busting up Bo Jackson, I was at the SMU game which was one of the many games we won in the last seconds. I remember thinking this team was winning too many games in the wrong manner, then we tied blOwU and things started on a downward spiral. It wasn't the bowl loss that bothered me as much as getting blown away by the aggsy. It was basically their coming out party. After that we wouldn't win again for some time. I think the Hawkeye loss was a direct result of the hangover loss to the aggsy.

I think Akers was fired a season or 2 later. I remembered he fired David McWilliams in a move to save his job, and McWilliams goes to Tech and has a great season, then we fired Akers just to bring McWilliams back. That set the program back 5 years. Of course between McWilliams and Macovich it took us 17 years to get back on track.

i was a high school student in FW the year Norm B came to TCU. He was TCU's prize recruit. Back then the frosh couldn't play on the varsity. So my buddies and I went to every TCU freshman game we could. It only cost a buck or two for students. Anyway Bulaich was not a bowling bowl at all. he looked at least 6'2". And weighed about 215-220. And his legs, below the knee, were not big. In fact they looked skinny, which was weird, because he seemed "built up" everywhere else.

I remember Boo being very fast. He could get to the corner on the sweep and take it home. I don't remember seeing him get caught from behind.

Minor detail, but the undisputed prize recruit of that class, not to mention likely the Froggies (thank you, Kerm Tipps) of the last 70 years was Gene Mayes, whom Dave Campbell labeled the best ever in Texas HS football.

As a note. Campbell's personal all half century team featured two OGs. One was Mayes, the other was Jack Adkisson
 
Rick Mueller, you may be thinking of our own, Terry (Teapot) Collins from San Angelo. He was about 5’8” or so. It was easier to knock him any way but down

I remember him well and thought about him. However, I seem to remember DKR's comment was about an opposition player. But, I also have CRS, so it may have indeed been Collins he was talking about.

Norm Bulaich when he was with the Baltimore Colts. Looks like he had pretty good size for a back in the 60's/70's. The 6'1", 217-pound running back/fullback held the Colts single-game rushing record, 198 yards against the New York Jets on September 19, 1971. He wasn't big by today's standards, but OL and DL guys were not 300+ pounders either back then.
 
So what is the latest on grad transfers, transfers, and late JUCOs?

We saw the Kentucky RB in the portal, but is there mutual interest?

Who is left of the OL/DT transfers?

Inquiring minds can't keep up.
