2019 Recruiting - Football

Stacking that offensive line is so important. Look at the Cowboys just a couple of years ago when they finally prioritized the line. They were awesome up front. So many problems are solved when the road-graders and pass protectors are there doing their job.

You're correct, bystander - with a great OL, even average QBs and RBs can get the job done. Throw in great QBs and RBs and they contend for a championship.

That's exactly right; time in the pocket helps an average quarterback. Big holes up front help a back who lacks elite vision. We move the chains and give the defense a blow. Run the clock. It's the engine.

Part of BOB report on Braun --

" .... Braun was a two-time All-ACC selection during his three years at Georgia Tech and immediately became a coveted prospect nationally when he announced his intentions to leave Atlanta in late January.

On track to graduate in May, Braun is a literature, media, and communication major who is a two-time member of the ACC academic honor roll.

Braun grew up in the state of Florida, where his father is currently the athletic director and assistant head coach at Suwanee High School in Live Oak. His younger brother, Joshua, is a consensus four-star offensive tackle in the 2020 class who plays for his father at Suwanee. However, the elder Braun also spent a year as the offensive line coach at Hallsville, where Parker played his senior season.

So the family has some ties to both states, but the ties to Florida are much stronger, which helps explain why Braun took a visit to Gainesville and why the Gators were considered a top contender. Braun had also intended to visit Auburn and was trying to set up a visit to Ohio State.

With two open guard spots, however, Texas was able to offer a path to playing time, as well as the high-level coaching of Hand. The program’s success last season and overall positive trajectory could combine with the success of Calvin Anderson as a fellow graduate transfer offensive lineman to provide an appealing situation for Braun.

As arguably the best graduate transfer offensive guard on the market — and perhaps the best offensive lineman overall — Braun could immediately elevate guard play for the Horns over what Hand was able to get last season from Patrick Vahe, Elijah Rodriguez, and, in a much smaller capacity, Derek Kerstetter...."

Report: Graduate transfer OG Parker Braun commits to Texas

Again, like last year with the grad transfers, I would say our #3 recruiting ranking is elevated a bit above the others who were close to us (#4-6).

Maybe that grad tackle from UVA didn’t pan out, which is why we offered Big Willie.

Braun has discussed the need to add strength and weight to his frame to compete in a different offense and is considering a redshirt season, but the guess here is that Braun will be able to earn a starting job with the Longhorns this season after arriving on campus during the summer.

From the article, it looks like he has two years of eligibility if he redshirts.

One year if he doesn't...I guess.

His decision one way or the other should be respected. Hope he opts to play next year (and not redshirt). He will probably start right away and get valuable training for the NFL. By the way he handled DL on film, he's plenty strong. Don't let his 280s weight fool you, he's not as fat as most linemen.

Agreed. Denver had a dominant O-line a few years ago with a bunch of sub-300 guys.

Completely agree. Good OL come in different packages. The 1990s saw two great NFL lines with opposite body types. Denver, as you mentioned, with leaner OL (may have continued beyond that era...?), and Dallas with hulking giant behemoths. Both were highly effective.

I don't mind a 320lb lineman who can move like a 280lb lineman, and I don't mind a 280lb lineman who can hit and push like a 320lb lineman. The film tells the tale--The eye in the sky tells no lies.

Sounds obvious, but a lot of folks get mentally bogged down on the numbers, body weight, and measurements.

Funny, because your handle is Chop and I think Denver perfected chop blocking back in the day. I specifically remember a game where Terrell Davis ran through gaping holes against Dallas because of chop blocking.

With Braun, are we convinced this is true? Any twitter confimations from him? Doesn't he have a brother who is a top ol in 2020, is that Joshua Braun, 4 star out of Florida?

  • Ricky had good not great OL in 97-98. Same with Benson. I'll take a great back anyday. Earl didn't have great lines either.

Like Ron Dayne? He broke Ricky’s record, must have been a great back.
Or, maybe it was the o-line at Wisconsin.
Tongue in cheek of course, for the younger group.
