2019 Recruiting - Football

I think everyone should have a good feel how all of this is going to finish in February. There are concerns about Texas' performance in this round. Herman says he recruited for need and got who he really wanted. Who knows and what else could he say?

IMHO Texas should be concerned about falling behind its conference rival (ou) and another Power 5 school in its own state. Personally, the only way aggy has the 3rd best class in the country is due to the $EC bump. ou has a better class than aggy. This will correct itself when Fisher fails to win the $EC West ever; however getting out recruited by ou more often than not is getting old and showing up on the field.
OU does a good job of finding players around the country with high potential. This year the star rankings are about the same as Texas with the exception of the two 5 stars, one of which is the receiver from Allen who caught two TD passes early against Duncanville in the championship game and caught nothing for substantial yardage after that. He is a good looking athlete but so are most quality receivers and Texas got really good ones this year. Three of the top OU recruits are receivers. I doubt that their group of receivers collectively are any better than that of Texas.

Tom said thst he recruited to needs and I think he did that by going heavy outside of Texas. This year the Aggies soaked up a lot of young Texas minds with stars for the sake of stars using bet on-the-come b.s. “We have a national champion type coach and we will now win one because he knows how, and our big brother is Alabama.” Wanna b’s, gonna b’s. Poor kids.

As to the talk about coaching up potential talent, the one thing you cannot teach is speed and it appears that Tom got it at all of the recruited positions. That is a real positive.

Out recruited them last year. 1 spot behind them for now this year.
Won one, lost one this year against them.
I hate to say this, but the best player in both games is gone.
I’m comfortable with the direction this ship is heading.

OU has entrance standards

Of course they do, but their requirements are more elite than most schools:

SAT = Speed as Timed; 4.3 - 4.49 is automatic admission

ACT = Average Cybex Tryout; press over 400 pounds and/or leg press 450+ is automatic admission

There are also vertical/horizontal admissions, such as 6'4"+ and 255+ pounds

Well played sir

In all fairness to Zero U, they are instituting new standards to upgrade the perception of the student athlete. They have, in fact, placed a new requirement to take effect next football season - "A student athlete will not be awarded a letter unless he can identify that letter, without assistance, within five seconds."

By Joe Hamilton of Burnt Orange Nation on Hookfin--

Hookfin is a gifted player that is equipped with astonishing qualities that will translate to the college level exceedingly. The newly Texas commit is well-versed within his technique at the offensive tackle position. Hookfin plays with a solid base and active feet while in pass protection, and is able to use his long arms with a combination of his quick hands while run blocking. His towering size, skilled athleticism, and production on the field are just a few indicators of what type of player Hookfin can be during his tenure at Texas. There’s obviously a lot of work to be done, but if Hookfin can continue to pack on a substantial amount weight and strength (particularly to the upper body), continue to evolve his technique, and develop a consistent mean-streak; he could be a player that makes a lot of noise while wearing burnt orange.

4-star OT Isaiah Hookfin signs with Texas over Baylor

Hopefully he red-shirts and Hand develops him as needed. Depth depth depth for the future is what we need. I hope we can target and sign at least four 4-stars next year.

Any JUCO's or graduate transfers on the horizon for Feb 2019?

We look good at OT in terms of depth - we have some bodies at least
Interior not so good
You could argue the Bragg miss at center may have single biggest miss of this entire class
Herman emphasized at the presser that Tyler Johnson could play anywhere on the line, so we will have to see how that shakes out. He is going to be a good one

Looks like he needs work according to this film (I queued it up one match-up before his sequence) but yeah, he we could use him...

Of course, they have two letters to choose from, O or U. Answers like "Oh man, that's a tough one" and "You know I don't know that" are given full credit. Entrance to the honors college is guaranteed with the answer "Oh, you have to be kidding."

With the late signing of Hookfin, did the Horns ranking move up from the #9 position I saw yesterday?

Nope. According to 247 his rating was actually lower than our average before he signed. Looks like we are still 9th.

While nosing around the site I found the all time Texas commit list with VY as the highest rated recruit ever with a perfect 1.000 recruiting evaluation score. Not sure I've ever seen a perfect score.

Edit: looks like there have been 5 since 2000 with a 1.000 rating with VY being the only offensive player on the list. Others are Jadeveon Clowney, Robert Nkemdiche, Rashan Gary and Ernie Sims.

FWIW, Bru McCoy is #187 on that all time list.
