2018 Recruiting - WBB

No - Deja and Sedona are on Cy Fair Elite (in DFW this weekend). These AAU/EYBL teams are confusing as hell. Cy Fair Elite is just nuts though: Deja, Sedona, Charli Collier, Jordyn Merritt, Christyn Williams, Jaden Owens and Madison Williams.

Jeez that's a championship caliber team! (I agree--confusing on the Cy Fair Elite and Cy Fair Premier names.)

With Destiny Littleton coming on board that makes us now have ONE spot remaining in the 2018 recruiting class! I believe that Nalyssa Smith or Queen Egbo are the Priority in this recruiting cycle over a shooting guard!
Yes, Littleton made our job of managing recruiting so much simpler. I just hope Karen appreciates us doing this for her.

Hmmm... Who has seen Egbo play? I haven't.
I just wonder if you take Egbo or close shop on 2018 and hold the last ship in reserve.

It doesn't surprise me that Texas wasn't in her top 4. My hunch is that her top 2 are Baylor and South Carolina.

With the trend of transfers increasing and finding a last minute prize with Littleton, I would be happy saving a scholarship if the best fit isn't available for the last 2018 spot.

I agree, whatever happens with that last scholarship is fine. We've got 6 great recruits combined between 2017 and 2018, with three consensus top 10 in their respective class, and four McD's All-Americans (I'm including Sedona because she's a shoo-in next year). The scholie is there if we need it, so no worries either way!

Definitely Nalyssa Smith (blue #65) was the most dominant player at the I-45 Shootout. This was my first time to catch her. She has the body of a power forward, dominated the post defensively, and couldn't be contained from the offensive glass for strong put backs with defense around her. Yet she has guard like skills and is able to grab the defensive rebound and lead transition. In many ways she plays similarly to Joyner Holmes, though Joyner's quickness, speed, and jumpability is a rung higher than Nalyssa. Nalyssa was the team high scorer for her team at 15 points.

Queen Egbo (yellow #16) is a traditional back to the basket post player. Doesn't venture outside the paint but once she establishes the low post she's able to finish easily with her jump hooks as she has one of the higher verticals. But her offensive skills remain raw. Defensively she's a presence in the paint and will block a ton of shots. During a defensive breakdown, she sprinted from the paint and was able to block the 3-point shot of an opposing guard. Because of her body size and jumpability, she's tough to contain off the glass. Queen finished with 9 points.

It doesn't totally surprise me that Nalyssa has eliminated Texas from her potential favorites. I saw her and her parents in attendance at 2 games last year. I kept watching her and her body language was telling me that she just didn't have that much interest in the team. I had rather see her go to South Carolina over Baylor.

Recruiting for our 2017 & 2018 classes certainly hasn't gone in an easy-to-follow order.

We've had 2018 Shae Routt committed for several years, and Sedona committed last Fall. 2017 Rellah's verbal announcement (and signature) came in November followed by 2018 Lolo Davenport's commitment in December. We then got to our current state by getting 2017 Destiny Littleton's signature this past week.

So, here we are now at 15 players for the 2017-18 season barring any attrition. With 3 players committed for the 2018 class, that does leave room for one more addition. But, if the tweet Tasia Forman posted which led some to believe she was leaving Texas and heading to North Texas, that leaves one 'ship to possibly use on an incoming transfer (now) instead of using it for the 2018 class.

Once the current attrition/transfer season ends (between now and start of Fall classes), that will clarify what options are left for 2018-19. Definitely keeping an eye on Louisville transfer Center, Ciera Johnson. If we get her, she sits out the upcoming season and really strengthens our depth for the following 3 seasons.

Hard to say we "need" to fill a position for 2018 as it seems we are in good shape across the board (assuming everyone remains/gets healthy for the upcoming season) :

Center: Audrey Anne Goudreau (Sr), Jatarie White (Jr), Olamide Aborowa (Jr)

Forwards/Wings: Khaleann Caron-Goudreau (Jr), Joyner Holmes (Soph), Rellah Boothe (Fr), Jordan Hosey (Jr), Jada Underwood (Soph)

Shooting Guards: Ariel Atkins (Sr), Lashann Higgs (Jr), Destiny Littleton (Fr)

Point Guards: Brooke McCarty (Sr), Tasia Foman (Sr), Alecia Sutton (Soph), Chasity Patterson (Fr)

We know that Sedona will play Center in 2018. Shae Routt seems like a good fit for small forward, but perhaps can also play power forward. Lolo Davenport seems like she is also a good fit for small forward, but perhaps can also play shooting guard. Versatility does help the different lineup combinations.

Getting 2018 Nalyssa Smith would definitely be a luxury for us as we seem to be in good shape at forward with Joyner and Rellah. But, not to my surprise, it seems like we are outside her Top 4 choices. I think Queen Egbo's greatest strength is her rebounding on both ends; that would be a great skill to add to our current roster; she also seems like a good post defender with the ability to block shots. Joanne Allen-Taylor definitely brings more shooting ability to our back court; she could still make sense as an addition as we will be losing Ariel and Brooke.

Coach Tina posted a tweet this AM that she was up at 4:00 am heading out for a recruiting visit. The staff is certainly still "hard at work". Wonder where she was headed and who she planned to visit?

From what I've been able to find, though both are listed as Wings, it seems Lolo and Shae are hybrid forwards but not identical skill sets - Lolo more of a 2-3 with Shae a 3-4 (especially if she is the legit 6' 2" that I've read recently).

Cy Fair Elite (Sedona and Deja) are playing in the Boo Williams EYBL event in Virginia this weekend and have been rolling over other elite teams:

Sedona (given) and Charli (probably):

Is Jordyn Merritt (2020) on Cy Fair Elite? If so, it doesn't hurt that she is developing friendships with Sedona and Deja (as well as Lolo D).

Brief highlights from the past weekend's Boo Williams events - Lolo, Sedona, Honesty Scott-Grayson, and a few other familiar names make appearances.

Re the new ESPN 2018 rankings...UConn fans will be in an frenzy now, since they have a commit from #2 and apparently have a good chance with #1 and #3. This kind of ranking is fun, but kind of ridiculous really, to think that anyone can actually ascertain that one player is slightly greater than the player just below, but slightly less great than the player just above. Americans love to rank things, from colleges to best places to live to brands of mayonnaise to... well, just about everything in our lives.

Sedona is good. She is very smooth and coordinated for 6"7". I'm glad she is back with Texas.

Charli Collier could be a legitmate #1 in the 2018 class. Were Charli and Sedona both committed to Texas once upon a time?

Zay Green also stood out in the video. I assume "Zay" is Zarielle Green out of Duncanville?

Charli, Sedona and Shae all committed to Texas in the 8th grade. Lost 1 (Charli), regained 1 (Sedona) and 1 hasn't faltered (Shae). All in all, better than most of the way those really early commits work out.

You are correct - Zay and Zarielle are the same person.

Not much of Sedona in that clip from the Boo Williams. One basket made and one block? ESPN seems to see her defense as really good, but implies that she still needs work on offense. Can't wait to see her in action. Collier's offense looks good, and it seems she is a good 3 point shooter. UConn really won't need her. She should dump them and recommit to us.

Note from this weekend EliteIsEarned camp (Sedona, Lolo and Deja all in attendance):

The same Twitter account retweeted this from Deja:

On the left: Sedona, Deja and Jaden Owens
On the right: same 3 plus Lolo and 1 player I can't place

Is that Aja Holmes? I know Texas is recruiting her pretty hard right now!! And she's a San Antonio girl!

Glad to see 2019 Jaden Owens with Deja and Sedona. Now that she's de-committed from SMU, I can only hope we are involved with her as Lashann moves on in 2019, and our guards remaining will be Alecia (sr.), Chasity (jr.), and Destiny (jr.). Still not sure where to group Lolo yet.

I think the other player in the photo is Sarah Andrews (based on who else is on the tweet list).

So, then Sedona switched club teams? I just remembered that she used to be on the club team with Tatum Veitenheimer, Cat Reese, Lauren, Heard, and Trinity Oliver. Hmmmmn . . .
