We got an OL

Texas has landed their first 2016 offensive line commit this evening in DeSoto (TX) OL Xavier Newman, who was offered by Texas 12 days ago and visited for the Spring game last weekend. It looked like Texas A&M was the leader heading into his Texas visit but I was told that Newman and his mother were blown away by the visit and he decided to shut it down quickly. As I said, TAMU was a major factor in his recruitment as was Colorado, a school with lots of ties to DeSoto HS.

Look for Texas to land around 3 OL in 2017. They are sitting in a good spot with elite OT Walker Little right now, and Newman will play guard at Texas as he is around 6’3 280 pounds right now. Newman was also invited to the Opening OL/DL finals this summer as he dominated at the Dallas regional. This is a really solid pickup for the Longhorns and OL coach Matt Mattox.

At 270 lbs, he is not exactly huge like Charlie says in his tweet, but the guy is good, and the recruiting gurus seem to think he is really coming up. He will be much higher ranked by the time NSD gets here, I suspect.

Mattox seems to like --

If he's 270 pounds as a junior in high school and it's good weight, I'm not worried about Newman lacking adequate mass 2-3 years down the road when he takes the field as a Longhorn.

That is simply amazing. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a willfully blind idiot.

He can recruit, and it is not hard to recruit to the University of Texas.....now can he get over the damned coaching mistakes, looks like the offense will be in good hands with Foreman and Warren!!!!!

I think you are missing the point. The point was spotting talent.

Hamm on JK Dobbins

LaGrange, Texas four-star running back J.K. Dobbins shocked many experts when he announced his commitment to Ohio State earlier this spring. Not because the Buckeyes aren’t a great fit but the All-American had never visited Columbus before making the call to Urban Meyer. Just like any high profile recruitment, they’re rarely over until the ink is dry on that letter of intent.

* * * *

Dobbins does have some schools in mind that he’s still curious about at the very least. “I got a two or three schools,” he said when asked who would be the biggest threat to OSU. “USC, Florida and Penn State.” He added about the Trojans, “USC, Coach (Tommy) Robinson, I’ve known him since my freshman year. The running backs have had some success. Ronald Jones, he’s been pretty good in that offense” He added about Penn State, “Coach (Charles) Huff he seems like a great coach from my talks with him and what I’ve seen about him. Look at Saquon Barkley, freshman All-American.” He added about Florida, “I just grew up liking them so when they came into the picture it was great. The coaching staff seems pretty genuine.”

There seems to be this growing sentiment that if Dobbins doesn’t end up at OSU that it will be the Texas Longhorns who steal him but that doesn’t match up with his comments. “Texas, I’ve talked to Coach (Charlie) Strong a bit but Texas...I don’t know. A lot of people thought just because it was my dream school I was going to commit right after I got the offer but just cause it’s my dream school it doesn’t mean it’s a good fit. Like, when you’re a little kid you know it’s your dream to go play there but things change as you get older. There are a lot of things that play into it.”

While the all-state selection as a junior is keeping in contact with other coaching staffs, Dobbins remains steady with his commitment status. “It’s really nothing, really,” he said. “It’s hard to explain but I’m solid with Ohio State.” Dobbins, an early graduate, has no summer visit plans and says he “doesn’t even know when he’s getting back up to Ohio State” at the moment. The 5-foot-10 and 200-pound Dobbins is a 4-star prospect in the 247Sports Composite. He is the country’s No. 47 overall prospect, the No. 3 running back, and the No. 6 prospect in Texas
