100 Day Countdown - 2023

# 77 KENNETH SIMS

Best memory ever: 4th down for OU at the Texas 5 yard line in 1977
Thomas Lott, Oklahoma's jet-fast quarterback, looked over the line and took the snap.
"Thomas took the ball down the right side," Shearer narrates now. "I just scooted all the way down the line and Thomas decided to cut it up."
The rest is in the UT history books.
"Johnnie hit him high and I hit him low.”
No gain.

Think maybe it was the play at 29:23 in this video?

The HUGE punt by Exrleben from the back of the end zone to the ou 20 flipped the field and it allowed the punt team to cover the return man and hold him to a 1-2 yard return.

I think the punt was credited as 69 yards net. But from nearly the back of the end zone line to the ou 20 - the ball traveled in the air approx. 87-88 yards, if my math is right!!:yikes:

Without a doubt, for me, the single most important win ever over Oklahoma. I was a '77 graduate from the Texas college of pharmacy and we had not beat them in 5 years. I was on my way to Dallas to take my boards and watched the game in Austin with some strangers at someone's house I just met. They were not very big football fans, and for me this game was life and death, so I don't think they understood my zeal. After the game, I called my Dad, a Texas alum, and boy was that a memorable conversation! If you remember, the drag exploded in celebration afterwards.

I had to set up a new countdown timer so I wasn’t sure if I set it correctly. I think it would be 77 today but wanted to see if someone could confirm.

I agree with 77 for today and apologize for how long it took me to get a good count. I got 3 different numbers and averaged them.:beertoast:

1977 was the only football game I ever attended where I saw a grown man cry due to the victory!

Countdown from day 75-50 takes the longest in my opinion. The countdown always start fast, particularly if the Horns are still playing baseball. Then, we hit the doldrums. In 25 days from now, we get a little breeze with the conference media days, which is shortly followed by a stronger breeze of the start of fall practice. Till then, drudgery.

I think the NBA could make a brilliant move shifting their season by about 6 to 8 weeks. They would be the dominant televised sport for most of the Summer (face it, MLB regular season games appeal to relatively few people). And selfishly, it would shrink the dog days of sports down to just a couple of weeks.

Beach volleyball - college tournament from mid June to mid July.

SN,

I agree; if the NBA would start their season in December and conclude in early April, the TV ratings might be higher. Then again if the NBA started the third week of January and had playoffs in late February, that would be a huge improvement.

I kinda agree...the NBA plays 82 regular season games. IMHO, entirely too many for my ADHD brain. But honestly, that's nuthin'... MLB's 162 game season in my opinion is UBSURD! Take SH's idea & apply it to baseball & that would be REAL improvement in the sports world. Start the preseason on May 4...begin regular season June 4...have the All-Star break from July 4 - Sept 4...then start the playoffs Oct 4. That's a MLB season that would capture my feeble attention. As is, I'm done with baseball after Omaha.
