WORLD CUP 2010 (TV Schedules and brackets also)

SPOILERS!

Australia 2, Serbia 1--Final.
Germany 1, Ghana 0--Final.

And that closes the book on Group D. Germany wins the group and will face England in one of the top match-ups of the initial knockout stage. Ghana finishes runner-up and will take on our beloved Yanks in the round of 16.

USA v. Ghana in the round of 16. Would not have expected that a month ago.

The third day of third-round simulcast matches is upon us!

After much internal wrangling, I've decided to focus my attention on the New Zealand-Paraguay affair, so to anyone watching the Italy-Slovakia match, I say, "Please share your observations."

Well Texas obviously got screwed by a rigged voting system so I'd be curious to see how "Draw Lots" works.

I'd love to see Italy get screwed (I despise their style of play) and they get pelted by tomatoes and eggs when they go home. NZ's been a great cinderella story. They could also win by the same scores but I figure a draw is the likeliest way for the tiebreaker to occur.

Other than Honduras all of the teams in the Americas look to be going through to the next round. This is pretty impressive with Uruguay and Mexico in group A, Argentina in group B, USA in group C, Paraguay in group F, Brazil in group G and finally Chile in group H.

SPOILER

Slovakia 1 Italy 0

26th minute Róbert Vittek (SVK) shoots right footed, and scores! Assisted by Juraj Kucka

SPOILER!

Paraguay 0, New Zealand 0--39th minute.

The South Americans are in complete control of the game, possessing the ball 68 percent of the time and attempting 6 shots to New Zealand's 1. And yet they cannot crack the Kiwis' backline for an earnest chance on goal.

I know I'm a broken record in singing their praises, but the All Whites' performance in this tournament so far is like a bad MLS side hanging with a Champions League quarterfinalist.

Gem, I actually missed the goal, had stepped away to get some breakfast and come back to see Slovakia celebrating.

Figured yahoo had as good an explanation as anyone.

SPOILER

Slovakia 1 Italy 0

Slovakia almost score again in injury time as a hard shot from outside the area goes just wide of the post and had the goal keeper beaten. Slovakia have outclassed Italy in this match and look nto be the better squad through 45 minutes.

SPOILER!

Paraguay 0, New Zealand 0--Half.

Very lackluster opening frame sees only one shot on goal (from Paraguay), which the keeper easily handled. The South Americans seem content to play for a draw--and why not? They are sitting on five points and first in group if current scores hold.

Meanwhile, the All Whites have to be questioned for their strategy and effort. Perhaps both will change for the better when they learn of the Slovakia-Italy score.

Stats for the half: Paraguay saw 68 percent of the ball and took seven shots to New Zealand's one. Nearly all were from range and well off target.

Slovakia goalie does his best italian impression and ref isnt buying it and tells him to get up. Very nice to see.

SPOILER

Still 1-0 Slovakia 55th minute

Italy waste a great chance as through ball to Dinatale has him one on one with goalie from right side of net but he shoots it wide.

SPOILER!

Paraguay 0, New Zealand 0--60th minute.

The match is two-thirds over and we've still only seen one shot on goal (with the first corner kick coming).

Because of Slovakia's lead on Italy, the Kiwis must surely know that they must score at this point to have any hope of going through.

Paraguay's corner kick results in a second shot on goal that the Kiwi keeper does well to turn aside.

SPOILER!

Paraguay 0, New Zealand 0--66th minute.

Surprise move from the Paraguayans here as two strikers (Lucas Barrios and Edgar Benitez) are sent on in exchange for a striker (Oscar Cardozo) and a midfielder (Nelson Haedo Valdez).

SPOILER

Almost impossible to tell but Italy shot is stopped either just on or perhaps just over the line. Waiting to see replay. Goalie had gone out to try and knock away a cross which he missed and setter for Italy stopped by defender. Controversy awaits.

It was Quagliarella with the shot and Martin Škrtel who eigther stopped it with his left knee or his right foot. If it was his knee then it was on the line if it was his foot looked like it was behind the line and should be goal.

SPOILER!

Paraguay 0, New Zealand 0--68th minute.

Youngster Chris Wood comes on for Rory Fallon as the Kiwis look to ratchet up their attack.

Replay now shows it was probably a goal. Wow.

Doesnt matter scoreboard still reads 1 nil Slovakia.

I agree--that looked like a goal.

What's the letter of the law there--must the entire ball cross the line or most/some of it?
