The Albiceleste go through on top of Group B having gotten the full nine points. Meanwhile, South Korea is clinging to a 2-2 draw with Nigeria that, if it holds, would put the Asians through.
Very nice result for South Korea, unlike Greece the Koreans who knew they probably just needed a draw didnt play for one but attacked and played offensive futbol. Good for them. South Korea give Asia a round of 16 team.
And there you have it--the United States and England finish tied for tops in Group C but our Yanks qualify as group-winners on the strength of four goals scored to England's two.
This marks the first time the U.S. has finished unbeaten in World Cup group play and emerged as group champion since 1930, the very first Cup. Still, our Yanks advanced by the skin of their teeth and couldn't have left it any later than Donovan's game-winning goal in the first minute of stoppage time.
Pretty so-so soccer from both of these matches so far. One would've expected more.
And thanks, l00p. It's nice to be able to talk and watch games with folks who also appreciate the sport and this tournament. Neither occur often enough to take for granted ...
Seems like as these afternoon games go on a single goal in either one will put incredible pressure on all four teams and hopefully that opens up the matches. Right now everyone just seems like they are waiting instead of attacking.
If only Ghana could get a couple of miracle goals, we could very well be seeing Australia in the first knockout match. Don't think the Germans are going to allow it, though.
If it stays as currently situated the US will have a chance at revenge for the phantom PK call of '06 that kept us from having a shot at the round of 16.
With the Serbians all but out of the picture, expect Ghana to do very little attacking in an effort to protect its goal differential advantage over the Socceroos.
You make sense. The announcers said it was one more needed to tie and go ahead for some reason but they could have gotten different info and been distracted calling their own match.
Terrible goalkeeping error allows Serbia to pull one back. Schwarzer spills a routine ball direclty to Marko Pantelic, who passes GO! and collects $200 as he boots the ball into the back of the net.
