Will Beto O'Rourke do better or worse than Wendy Davis?

My great, great grandfather fought for the confederates. Wounded at Gettysburg then lost a leg at Chickamauga but survived. My ancestors were dirt poor farmers when they arrived in East Texas. I have pictures of my father as a teenager without shoes. From stories I heard from my grandparents, he left out on his own with Hood’s Brigade for adventure at 16. I can guarantee you he didn’t own slaves.

Again, at one time many people thought the earth was flat. I agree it would be hard to think slavery was ever good, but somehow it was accepted. As to civil war, most southerners who fought did not own slaves. They readily accepted slavery though which goes to the point in my post. 20% of all civil war soldiers were under 18. Most were probably fighting for the adventure versus a political position in life.

Most Southerners were fighting because an army from the North had invaded their homeland.

Huisache is correct. Southern states seceded because of slavery. That explicitly stated that.

However, the Southerners fought because the Union army was going through their state.

Wasn't Lee's remark about the Eyes of the South about a regiment of Hood's? Terrys Texas Brigade?

Fyi, Hood was a horrible leader. He was popular for a while because he was gung ho and aggressive. But in his gusto he was wasteful of life and foolish.

My great grand father fought for the Mississippi Army at the start of the war. He was in the poorest area of the country at the time known as the Big Hungry.

Then they passed the 20 slave law, which meant rich slave owners and their sons didn't have to be in the Confederate army. At that point he defected. Went to Illinois where some of his family was and fought for the Union army.
