Where does Sam E fall in UT QB history

Sam has been a Warhorse for UT even though he never won a championship.
Where does Sam fall out of these former QBs (not in any particular order)

Vince Young
Colt McCoy
Bobby Layne
Marty Akins
James Street
Peter Gardere
Major Applewhite
James Brown
I'll take Eddie Phillips over Marty Akins any day.

Hard to rank for me, but strictly modern era QB’s. 70s +
If could wave a wand and have 3 more n my roster, Sam is 3rd.
Sams issues have been team talent and coaching issues. If Sam was wearing Crimson- he’d be up for the Hiesman.

VY
Colt
Ehlinger
Simms
Applewhite
Robert Brewer

Well football is a team sport and you can have a good or great quarterback and not finish as a national champion because the rest of your team is not good enough.

This Miami game is going to last longer than 8:00 so be prepared to go to somewhere else like Fox sports Southwest or ESPN2 or something.

Miami down 37-34. Miami had a nice end around trick play for two point conversion to bring it within three. They made it easily. I always think why can't we do that when a play works so easily.

Behind the conference / title winners like Colt, Vince, Street.
From then, a question of how much emphasis you place on titles compared to personal ability, as well as how good the team is.

James Brown won two conference titles, but was not as good of a QB as Sam. But delivered classic Texas wins in the 95 ATM game, and the 96 B12 game. What big wins does Sam have that are classic wins - maybe the Sugar bowl.

So Brown next.

I see Sam as a bigger, better Applewhite. Though Applewhite had more classic wins. After him, ahead of Simms.

LSU defense made fun of Sam before the game. Then even their biggest loudmouths were humbly praising his abilities. Sure Sam cost Texas games. But his determination also kept us in games and ended up winning a few....

If we're gonna make it almost all about team success, why involve Sam, VY, James Street, Bobby Layne, Chris and Major, or any other individual? Just ask which UT teams were the best ones of all time and get straight to the point that way.

If the OP had asked about QB talent, I would agree that Sam is up there. I have also been consistent that he has been a victim of bad schemes and coaching at Texas.

What kinda list is this if Chris Simms ain’t on it???

An accurate list

As for Sam, he most reminds me of Marty. Throw out the stats, because how often did DKR throw the ball when Marty was QB.

If you are going on pure talent, Mark McBath is one of the most talented QBs that we have ever had. Thank you OU for cutting that short.

VY
Bobby Layne
James Street (covered the line in every game he started except one)
Colt

FWIW, 4th, I agree that Eddie was the best wishbone QB I ever saw with the possible exception of Jack Mildren

Didn't McBath give up football voluntarily to concentrate on med school?

Sam will always be high on that list for me. I appreciate a guy that grew up with Texas as his dream school, attended and stayed under less than favorable coaching situations, and performed well. By all accounts, he's a great student and will be successful in whatever he ends up doing in life. He'll always represent Texas well.

Sabre
How do all those stack up character wise and as undisputed team leaders?

I can answer that for Sabre.

They were all undisputed team leaders.
They all stack up well character wise.
Bobby Layne was a character.

Layne didn't always feel the need to practice, obey curfew, etc. Or so the legends go.

What isn't a legend is that Layne was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and he was presented with the large, framed proclamation at halftime of the TCU game in 1967. There were many boo's from the crowd. Many.

My Mother was a student on the Forty when Layne played and I had grown up hearing about him and his magic. She was a huge fan. I was just a kid and didn't understand why some Texas fans would be booing Longhorn Royalty. When my Mother saw my great confusion she explained it perfectly; "Sweetheart, at the University of Texas, we tend to take everything far too seriously, Bobby Layne took almost nothing seriously. Some people just can't get past that".

I cannot tell you how many times over the years I have thought about her "seriously" comparison. Like, I don't know, the day Abe Lemons was hired? The day Abe Lemons was fired?

If had to pick my top 4 / UT QB Mt. Rushmore, in this order:

VY
STREET
COLT
LAYNE

Next 6 not in order:

Phillips, Brown, Applewhite, Carlisle, Akins, Sam would round out my top 10.

Simms would be #11.

Just my .02

On the list of players who loved the University of Texas with their hearts & souls and gave everything they had on the football field, Sam ranks at the top. I appreciate him so much and believe that he will always represent the University admirably. A great individual, and a very good quarterback.

I’m with you George, Sam will always be high on the list of beloved among the Longhorn faithful because of his fortitude, determination, and unconditional love and devotion to all things Longhorn regardless of the environment. Maybe he did not win the NC, or even the CC but give him an OL or even a coach who knew every WR is not Collin Johnson so not everyone will win a 50/50 long ball dad gum it and I bet my paycheck he would have. And to tell you the truth, even if he hadn’t given 4 years of uncompromising dedication to UT, standing alone in the Cotton Bowl, horns raised, singing the Eyes, well that’s enough for me. Who knows what really went on in that locker room? I will always respect him just as I do those with championship rings.
