I'll take Eddie Phillips over Marty Akins any day.Sam has been a Warhorse for UT even though he never won a championship.
Where does Sam fall out of these former QBs (not in any particular order)
Vince Young
Colt McCoy
Bobby Layne
Marty Akins
James Street
Peter Gardere
Major Applewhite
James Brown
Only one full season as a starter, but Duke Carlisle deserves a mention.I'll take Eddie Phillips over Marty Akins any day.
All he did was win a National Championship which is the standard.Only one full season as a starter, but Duke Carlisle deserves a mention.
And play a little db. I was there for the interceptionAll he did was win a National Championship which is the standard.

Depends on what the standard is. How many NC's did Manning win?Well so did Tee Martin at Tennessee. Does that make him better than Peyton Manning?

If the OP had asked about QB talent, I would agree that Sam is up there. I have also been consistent that he has been a victim of bad schemes and coaching at Texas. If we're gonna make it almost all about team success, why involve Sam, VY, James Street, Bobby Layne, Chris and Major, or any other individual? Just ask which UT teams were the best ones of all time and get straight to the point that way.
You crusty old fart! And play a little db. I was there for the interception
What kinda list is this if Chris Simms ain’t on it???
Didn't McBath give up football voluntarily to concentrate on med school? An accurate list
As for Sam, he most reminds me of Marty. Throw out the stats, because how often did DKR throw the ball when Marty was QB.
If you are going on pure talent, Mark McBath is one of the most talented QBs that we have ever had. Thank you OU for cutting that short.
VY
Bobby Layne
James Street (covered the line in every game he started except one)
Colt
FWIW, 4th, I agree that Eddie was the best wishbone QB I ever saw with the possible exception of Jack Mildren

Sabre
How do all those stack up character wise and as undisputed team leaders?
I agree, I put him in James Brown category.Since the OP is about where Sam falls in UT history, not how talented he is compared to others, the answer is he just doesn't stack up. Besides the Sugar Bowl win, there has been nothing of significance he has done as the Texas quarterback.
Kid got drafted and played in pros. Not exactly my definition of average. I aNone. Tee Martin was an average qb on a really good team. That doesn't make him a better qb than Manning.
But Roll Left was historically significant.I agree, I put him in James Brown category.
