What Republicans need to do to gain real power

I'll be blunt, I'll call a spade a spade, I'll speak truth to a dysfunctional former power: it all starts with getting rid of the retard-religious right. There. I said it. You can refer to that bloc in more diplomatic terms, but they are basically the retard-religious (Christian) right.

Can that be done? At this point, it would be very difficult. Karl Rove made an unholy pact with them during the reign of GWB which has, unfortunately, sealed the fates of both the GOP and Christianity in today's society. Sealed the fates in a very detrimental way.

The GOP needs to accept science: evolution for starters. That may be enough to send some of the rats scurrying away from the party. Stop requiring an ideological purity test. Stop suggesting that it's un-Christian to not be a Repub. Stop accepting FOX News as their modern-day gospel.

Accept some form of legal abortion. Stop being neanderthal about contraception. And for god's sake, immediately kick out anyone who is dumb enough to mention "God's will" and "rape" in the same sentence; or "legitimate rape" and a "woman's body having a way of shutting that whole thing down", or that abortion to save the life of the mother is not needed anymore. Those people are f****** idiots and those who support them are as well.

Accept tax increases, even on (gasp) the super wealthy.Cut back defense spending (and a lot of other entitlement spending).

Stop being so hard-hearted on immigration. I mean, deny the kids of illegals a public education? I'm sure Jesus would be all for that.

The GOP was once a grand, old party; now it's just old. I don't see the GOP being able to accept reality just quite yet. FOX News says that Mitt lost b/c he was a "northeast liberal". Yeah, let's see how that works for you.

The GOP is mostly a front for very large corporate interests who are successful in fooling the average Joe Voter. Not that the Dems are a whole lot better.

As Samuel L. Jackson so eloquently said, "Wake the f*** up, America."

History will show this era to be a blight upon the GOP. Of course, many who post here will disagree. You, my friends, are the root of the problem. If you could see that, you wouldn't be the root of the problem.

All of these ideas are logical but worthless. This election made a few things clear. Negative works. Lies work. Hollow promises work.

The polls said that the economy was the #1 issue. But the voters proved this to be false. Most national polls had Romney with a clear lead on who is better fit to handle the economy. Then we have 50% unemployment in the 18-25 age range yet 60+% of the same age voted for Obama. Economy? I don't think so.

If the Republicans want to win a national election they need to put a hispanic candidate in front of a microphone and promise to give everyone $1 million. Forget all social topics, foreign topics, and don't commit to anything polarizing. The American people don't want details they just want to feel good.

I donated money to the Romney campaign and the republican party but if they can't beat a man with nothing to show after 4 years whose entire campaign was built on tearing down the other candidate, the party is lost. RIP, you received the last check from me. America deserves the government they elect.

I love how Perham so perfectly illustrates the pale, quivering, NorCal computer programmer, eco-warrior, latte-sipping, psuedo-intellectual, Euro-wannabe stereotype of the left wing of the Democratic party.

I actually laughed reading that opinion. How would you ever prove that. Is there some polling question asking people such views?

Y'all are giving the average voter way too much credit. People vote for the party they identify with usually based on race, ses, and sometimes gender. I actually had the conversation a couple of days ago:

Hispanic lady: I bet you voted for Romney.
Me: yes, how did you know?
HL: because white guys like Romney.
Me: who did you vote for?
HL: Obama, all the minorities are for Obama. And Romney is a racist.
Me: what did he ever do that was racist?
HL: I know lots of rich guys like him. They are all racist.

I had another conversation with a different Hispanic lady about how she chastised her parents for voting for Romney. She told them that Mexicans aren't supposed to vote for republicans. No other reason.

It's a party branding problem more than a problem with a specific issue. I have no idea how to get Hispanics back in the fold. You can't make changes to your stance on issues when people aren't voting on issues.

My mom was in the teacher's lounge many years ago talking to a Hispanic counselor. She asked him what the Democratic had ever done for Hispanics. He replied "lots of things." She pressed him to name one thing - any thing - that D's had done. She was really curious to hear what he had to say. Finally, he said "They have kept us from voting Republican for all these years!" You can't argue with that. And this man had a Master's degree.

I certainly hope you are correct. I see earning more of the Hispanic vote without pandering to be the big challenge of the next two decades. I think you have to get to them relatively soon so they don't become another blind voting bloc for dems.

Yes, she still gets space in the opinion page of the Wall Street Journal.

Trying to attack the messenger is a little beneath you, isn't it?
