What are you listening to?

Buried my best friends son last week! This was the Main song they played with the family pictures. Hug and kiss your kids! Great song, it’s always gonna be sad to me.

Don't know your friend but OMG that is terrible! Ocassionly, when hearing something like this, I think about what would I do if I lost one of my sons and honestly I can only think about it for a moment - I just cannot let my mind wander or dwell on it ... it's too unthinkable for me or any parent.

Have these on random as I work:

Here's Doug Sahm, Augie Meyers, and a young and sleeveless Alvin Crow--whom Doug let take an almost co-lead vocalist role for much of this show, along with Doug's son Shawn Sahm, and Johnny Perez (previously the drummer of Sir Douglas' group), performing live in Austin 1981. At 25:37 is an early version of Sahm's "Who Were You Thinking Of"--long before he and Augie put together the Texas Tornados. Good stuff. And totally Austin.

Just found this (below)--sounds like the late drummer Johnny Perez (Golden Gloves boxer) RIP also functioned as a sort of bouncer/body guard for the various incarnations of Doug's bands.

"Perez used to protect the other band members who would be hassled for their long hair, late front man Doug Sahm's son Shawn told the Express-News."

RIP Johnny Perez: Sir Douglas Quintet Drummer Dies at 69.
Johnny Perez, Topanga drummer and songwriter was 69

Check out the articles. He's little known, but he needs to be remembered.

Here's a powerful one from Kinky Friedman particularly appropriate for yesterday/today:

Dang, it'll nearly make your cry.

My dad and Augie Meyers are good friends. He played at my dad’s 80th Birthday party and at his other parties. He is a great story teller!

Amazingly, Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio busted them for drugs in Corpus!!!

I know Augie, but I know his son much better. We were friends when we were little.

What do you call that keyboardy organ-like instrument Augie plays while he’s sitting down?
IMHO, he’s a heck of a musician.

He plays a piano that way too. The grand piano I grew up having in our living room is the one he plays at my Dad's parties. He can sing too. I don't know what type of organ he is playing in the video, it's not a Casio, I know that!

The Beatles launched the band Badfinger on their Apple label before WB picked them up. They were very good, but had some really bad problems with their manager stealing $, and singer Pete Ham's suicide did them in.

All right, I'll lay off all this Doug and Augie stuff for a while after this, but this video is one you've got to see. Doug/Augie/Johnny Perez play "Mendocino" on Hugh Hefner's show "Playboy after Dark". Hefner dances with Barbi Benton (one of the most beautiful Playmates ever...) to Doug's tune. Also dancing in the dancing crowd is Sharon Tate (RIP). Look around 3:03-3:05 or so in the video--dancing with another similar-looking girl wearing white, and also around 1:48-1:50, and again at 2:21--sitting down wearing white. This video was shot January 25, 1969. She was killed by the Manson Family the night of August 8, 1969. Michael Caine was also in this video. This footage is pure gold.

When you search "Groovy" on Google, this video is the first thing that should pop up.

As for Barbi Benton:

"Hefner asked the young co-ed for a date. Upon being asked, she reportedly demurred to the then-42-year-old Hefner: "I don't know, I've never dated anyone over 24 before." To which Hefner replied, "That's all right, neither have I."" :lmao:

She later appeared on Hee Haw for 4 years.

I might get in trouble with Dion if I posted the photo(s) of her I actually wanted to, so this one will have to do:
