We're not improving

I think he showed us today that he is one of those players who makes everyone around him better.

Loved him on the field today. Pancaked a guy right away, then pushed him down again, and then jumped on top of him....Topped it off with a Russian dance near the end of the game. What's not to like?

Awesome in every way! I told my wife when he did that Rooskie dance that there could be no doubt about his conditioning or health. It's late in the game, he has played every down, and he is dancing!

The turd in the punchbowl of this season is the Maryland game. Think of how different your perception of this season would be if we had beaten Maryland, even by just a little bit. We'd be 7-4 with a good chance to be 8-4 at the end of the regular season and I think everyone would agree we are heading in the right direction.

This is a fair assumption imo. While everyone would still be giving Beck the Greg Davis treatment, 7-4 without your all american LT and no TEs and two QBs going in and out depending on health would be a great effort.

But even if take the turd out, we know it was there. I'm not drinking that kool-aid yet.

Not convinced a Grierless WVU team is "very good".

I agree with this. However, if Herman can finish 8-5 with a bowl win, two out of state road wins, and no 20+ point losses, then I would say we have improved and moved in the right direction year 1 from the 2014-16 seasons.

There is no doubt we have improved. I remember our defense being pourus, like we had bodies in the secondary but that is about it and the head coach had to take over. Our defense stopped some good offenses this year and we almost Won a few of those-yes moral victories. Even if we finish 6-7, which we won't, we would have improved.

Three of our victories are against teams with one win. One. I won't say we're definitely better until we beat ttu and have a 7-5 record.

The only reason Kansas got to two wins last year is they beat us. Iowa State got to 3 wins in 2015 by beating us. Sadly, just taking care of business is improvement. We were that bad the last two years.

Cary, you keep mentioning the victories against the lesser opponents. Glass half empty. But they have also beat three teams with winning records and could have easily won a couple of more of their other games. So, other than the Maryland game, I have seen tremendous defensive improvement the entire year with very little letdown that you may have seen in previous years after big games. If the offense comes to play Friday I can definitely see a resounding victory over Tech.

I see the whole glass. The top and bottom. If we beat ttu this weekend, and I think we will, then we will have "taken care of business."
Our defense needs to be on its game. ttu will throw everything at us, including the kitchen sink. I do worry about not having Hill in the secondary. I'm banking on big pressure being dialed up by Orlando to bring us the win. Rudolf is a tugboat back there, not that mobile.

I know we can score 3 or 4 td's on offense. If the D holds them to under 28, we will win, imho.

Taking care of ttu will bring us to a 7-5 record. And that will no doubt be an improvement.

The pattern continues. One step forward two steps back. We peaked in game 3.

Some of you say you see a toughness in this team that we did not havd last season. I disagree. This team turtled tonight when they were up by two scores and had the opportunity to win 3 games in a row for the first time in 3 seasons and to do it at home. Fragile!!

Also sick of hearing the excuses. The breaks evened out over the season and we are a .500 quality team any way you slice it.

Hope we get a cupcake for our bowl game.

Unfortunately it didn't happen and the OP was right...

Ugh. That play calling today. With the exception of Eastern Washington and Kansas, everyone on Tech's schedule scored more than 23 points. Hell, even Kansas had 19 and ESU put up 10 in Lubbock. #notmensa

I thought this team would be better and stronger at seasons end. I was wrong. As long as (very sorry) Sam exhibits Tony Romo tendencies Texas will have problems winning tight games. Tech did come to play tonight but Texas missed golden opportunities to put the game away. Honestly hope we don’t draw the Aggies in the bowl game.

Charlie Strong went 9-2 (almost 10-1) at South Florida. Something is rotten at UT AND A&M.

Charlie Strong went 0-2 against teams with winning records this year. That said, offensive coaching lost us the game today.

Dunno. If the aggies are favored, we will likely play to our abilities

IMO, everything is rotten this time of year now that Texas and A&M don't play on T or T+1.

Regardless of the move, we've only won one game since 2011 this time of year and lost the rest of them to TCU and Tech. <- seriously?

Even if we had won tonight, nobody nationally gives a $#&^ about beating a 5-6 team from Lubbock anyway. At least winning or losing the A&M game was about bragging rights every single time regardless of record. Sometimes it was the better team trying to preserve a bowl or a terrible team trying to set the tone for next season. Sometimes it decided the conference. Either way, it was MUCH better football.

No, coaching didn't cost us the game. Unless you mean choosing to play Sam the whole game. Shane should have been put in about midway into the 3rd quarter to replace Sam. Sam can't read defenses, he can't pass accurately enough to win at this level. He makes horrific turnovers; cannot protect the ball. has cost us games.

Sam is the best runner of the two. Shane is the best quarterback. Shane wins this game tonight by simply passing adequately, and protecting the ball. Our D played well enough to win. Sadly, poor QB play lost the game. Too bad TH wouldn't pull the trigger and get his passer into the game.

And the team is not improved. Defense yes. Team no.

Yes; but the defense folded when it counted all season so no real improvement there also.

This coaching staff knows how to create good sound bites, but has failed on the field (practice doesn't count).

Although the defense struggled last night, I see lots of individual improvement which tells me coaching is good on that side of the ball.

It will be interesting to see if Herman makes changes to the offense or does like Strong in year 2 with Watson. If he sticks with the current staff, he too will be gone within 4 years.

He is very much in the same situation Strong was with Watson and Mack Brown was with Manny Diaz. Does he make a change while there is still time?

It is also obvious to me that Applewhite as OC was a huge part of Herman’s success at
U of H just like he made the offense still mostly work with Case McCoy in 2013.
