We [Americans] are fat and rich.

I'm not sure what cereal y'all eat but the cereal I eat - Kashi Go Lean, Fiber One or Shredded Wheat - the serving is a cup. One cup + milk is quite a bit. Add a little something else like yogurt (stick to something like Lite n Fit which is a mere 60 calories) and that should keep you at around 400 calories. Also, for breakfast you could eat something like eggs with salsa and some multigrain toast. Just don't go overboard. Besides, a hearty breakfast is healthy - just not a massive breakfast full of saturated fats, added sugars, etc.

I'm overweight. The BMI theory says I'm 20-25 pounds overweight (I'd have to get down to 173 to be in the normal range at 5'10" - although I'm a little over 5'10" so let's call it 175).

I was a hair under 5'10" my senior year in high school and weighed 178 pounds for my last football game. So I was techinically overweight with very, very little fat and I didn't even look that big. There are too many factors in all of this, IMO. I would have to get down to 152 pounds to be in the middle of the normal range. There's no f'n way.

A while back I had let myself get way too big with a new job working too many hours. I refused to "waste" time I could be spending with my kids working out. But I made a change to start doing better. I got up to right at 200 pounds. I changed my eating habits and began working out. I got down to 187 and then plateaued. Started going up a little bit because of the weights. So I changed up the weights routine to higher rep lower weight. Still couldn't get much lower. I had my body fat tested and it was in the 10-12% range. So I guess it could still go lower, but I figure I'm a slightly taller than 5'10" guy that will feel healthiest at about 185 pounds. With a new baby and a busy time at work I've let myself get too heavy again over the last year plus. Hopefully this thread will motivate me to get it back down.

And, yes, I understand that BMI is more of an overall population tool and a first-level screen. I know it's not the final clinical diagnosis tool.

There have been a dozen or more fat-basing threads here in the last year, but never one bashing alcohol or tobacco (except for bar-smoking).

Lack of self-control and the willingness to eat just about anything is a big factor. Case in point... my Father-in-law really wanted to go to Pappasito's for Father's Day. My wife can't stand the place but took one for the team and went. So... besides having mediocre food, that place dishes up some seriously massive portions. Just giant. Take a good look at most of the clientele and you won't see the fit creme de la creme. They go there because of the vast amounts of food... probably order a huge cheese enchilada plate, gorge themselves on chips and queso and then say, "oh, I'll have a diet coke". Give me a break. People do need to accept responsibility for their shape and stop blaming it on convenient excuses.

Gadfly: your post is completely ******* ignorant. You have no ******* idea what you are talking about. The surgery I was talking about is not LAP BAND which sucks or RNY. Ready my ******* post before spouting off.

Secondly, this surgery ******* WORKS. Yes, stomach capacity is restricted. That is the ******* point. You eat a lot less and you are FULL. A typical obese person has a huge stomach. You put them on a restrictive diet they will continue to be HUNGRY ALL THE TIME. They can lose weight for a while but they WILL gain it back except for a small percentage.

Obesity is an ILLNESS. Why is it that with obesity there is this stupid "morality" that comes into play. People like you have no problem whatsoever with procedures for any other ailment, even those caused by the patient's lifestyle. Wake up and smell the coffee.

Calm down Iconoclast, this is just a thread that shows how much people hate fatties. It's just like the cop bashing threads you love so much. Isn't it fun? I mean I personally don't hate any group of people or get on the internet and say **** the _______. But if these fine posters want to say gross fat people are gross and fat, who are we to stand in their way?

A less-invasive way to have a full stomach than surgical banding, stapling, partial removal, et c. exists: drink water when you are hungry, and busy yourself with something distracting. I have no interest in maligning anyone's character or good name on account of his waistline, but the OP title is correct. We are fat and rich.

We all have animal urges, especially to eat and to copulate. We also have reason and can use supratentorial methods to solve problems rather than depending on modifying the rest of our anatomy to accommodate the difficulties therein.

I don't think I've seen the word "*******" used so much outside of a porno movie.

i am not disgusted by fat people, but i have to agree with others here.... surgery cannot be the solution for an entire population of fatties. it just can't be

Not only do I disagree with the assertion that surgery is the widespread answer, I don't even buy the premise that obese people have stretched stomachs that cause them to be too hungry to effectively diet. I just don't beleive that at all

I actually tried to research this issue in order to post a link to show it to be wrong. Unfornately, I couldn't find something I thought credible. None of the surgical websites said anything about it (that I could find). I found one website that clearly refuted that claim, but I was not sure whether the website was credible...so I didn't post a link. It's like trying to prove a negative....sometimes you just can't.

I realize that there are certain medical conditions or treatments that may cause weight gain. However, I think the majority of obese people either just don't care or are frustrated because what they have tried in the past has not worked. There is so much BS in the weight loss industry it confuses people. The concepts are so incredibly simple but hard to immplement.

To lose weight you must burn more calories than you eat and drink. Cardio and weight training help you burn more calories. A balanced healthy diet helps you eat fewer calories. How simple can it get? Now, if you weigh 400 pounds, eat 4,000 calories a day and lead a sedentary life, changing your lifestyle can be damned difficult. If you have poor metabolism, you just have to work harder at it. But that does not change the fact that the concept and principles are simple and logical.

fat and rich is the freakin' goal.

besides, tortillas and pasta taste good.

ok, now i'll go back and read what everyone is sayin...

Icono –

I know we’ve been antagonistic towards each other, but I’m rooting for you. If there’s a surgery that gives you a long term solution, I’m happy to applaud your dedication to your health. I truly hope it works.

Icon,

I still don't believe it. Why would I believe anything from someone as antagonistic as you? And I never said that the surgery won't work. Of course it works in most cases. I said I don't believe it is the answer for the obesity problem in this country. You said it cost $17k out of pocket, Guess what?...most people can't afford that. It just isn't the answer. I'm glad it worked for you and I know it will work for others also.

And while I admit there have been some "fat haters" on this thread, you can't find anything like that from me. I have been commenting and giving my opinions on weight loss and nutrition. I happen to know a lot about it and like to try to help people. I can even do that without using the word "*******".

Gadfly-

Thank you for your kind words and support. I apologize that I went off the deep end and hope you did not take offense personally.

This issue hits very close to home. I definitely believe in personal responsibility. If you are fat, you need to do something about it. The vast majority of fats who diet, lose weight but end up gaining it back. The surgery I have had has a remarkable track record in permanent weight loss. Dr. Cirangle of San Francisco, the father of the Sleeve Gastrectomy, is publishing the 5 year results study of people with my surgery. From what I have heard, the results are stellar and are comparable with RNY gastric bypass and much better than LAP BAND.

Surgery by itself will not work. You have to be mindful of your small stomach and stick with lean proteins. Hunger is controlled. I think one of the best benefits is that it gives you confidence since you WILL lose weight and it helps build healthier habits as one sees the results, does not feel deprived, and wants to keep it up.

Passion drives innovation and enlightenment. I appreciate it, and I don’t think, as men, we do it enough… my 2 cents.
