WC Boring

I don't recall ever saying I only watch elitist sports. I said people who watch soccer in this country act elitist because they watch the sport that other countries watch. I love watching baseball, and a majority of players come from dirt poor Latin American countries because it's a cheap sport to play.

Jim, you try and make a point about why soccer is better. I take your point and show you that that point is already visible in the sports that are popular in this country and that there is no motivation for non-soccer fans to watch soccer. Then you come back and say I don't get it and try to come up with some other reason why I must be wrong. I'm not going to try anymore because I don't have to. I know that all this soccer fever is going to go away in a couple weeks because the majority of sports fans in this country don't give a rats *** about soccer. Once the US team gets knocked out, ESPN won't give a **** because most of the temporary fans are watching the US, and once the tournament is over the real soccer fans will have to go back to watching the MLS (which ESPN doesn't cover, or hardly covers) or the European leagues which only get a score shown on the bottom line. You can tell yourself "oh, but this time will be different, this time soccer is going to catch on" but soccer fans say that every 4 years, or every time some foreign bigshot comes to this country to play. Newsflash, it ain't gonna catch on. You can delude yourself by saying I'm not a soccer fan so there's no way I could ever understand, but I don't have to be. Soccer will always be behind the big 4 in this country.

Mmmm, tacos, yummy tacos to eat while watching soccer today. What are you guys nibbling on?

I like tacos. Tacos taste good.

Yay tacos.

My tacos are popular worldwide, not just here in the States or in your household. My tacos may be 4th or 5th in your house but globally, that is a whole different story. These tacos has N.M. green chilis on them.

Have not been on here for ages, but popped in to check out the WC threads and saw this so wanted to comment.

Listen, it is fine if you find the sport boring. Personally most people outside of the USA couldn't give a toss if some American's don't like it. Everyone I know back home couldn't care less whether it is popular in the USA or not. I certainly don't care.

Personally I love 'American' Football (college). It took some time for it to be explained to me, but I gave it a chance and followed the Horns (always better when you are following a team and get to know the players). I don't like Baseball at all and Basketball I can take or leave really, but.....I don't feel the need to jump over to the Baseball board and tell them that their sport sucks, is slow, boring, with fans that most of the game seem to be chatting to each other and not even watching the game.

So, if you don't like it, find it boring, for sissys.....good for you.
Its a shame that you reinforce the American stereotype. It just makes you sound really ignorant.

I've played soccer (took a class at Texas and then played two seasons in the Austin Women's Soccer League) and I find it incredibly boring. And I don't like to watch it.

However, I have no problem with other people liking it and watching it.

To paraphrase Hawkeye Pierce, our opposable thumb is what sets us apart, and yet they don't allow soccer players (other than goaltenders) to use it.

They also play offense and defense for an entire game with only a short break at halftime. Our athletes are *******?

Of course, Texanne, its called football. You use your feet! Im not sure how you can be bored, unless youre so winded after 5 minutes that you have to run to the sideline and sit for 20 minutes because your side hurts. Or if you never get the ball passed to you.

I can remember playing flag football in junior high gym class, and what was really boring was running routes time and time again and never getting the ball thrown your way, or playing outfield in baseball and never having the ball hit your way. You just stand there.

Those tacos sound delicious!! I had some chips and guac today during the paraguay/italia game today...pretty tasty. It's too bad those diving, crying, cheating divas found a lucky equalizer...italy's fortunate to be in such a hapless group.

For the record, the USA/England match outdrew the first four games of the NBA finals.

The Link

And let's not forget this isn't a "dull" Spurs/Nets matchup. The NBA can't ask for anything better than Lakers/Celtics...

I disagree. I believe the games will get worse, like they always do. The bigger the game, the tighter the teams. The pucker factor will be set to diamond.

This has been the worst world cup since Italia 90. Frankly, I was expecting this kind of style in 2006, in response to the tactics a crap team like Greece used to win euro 2004.

When it takes 14 games for both teams to score in a game that doesn't end in a tie, it doesn't say much about the quality of the games.

Huh? Since when does a 0-0 tie in soccer have anything to do with the quality of the game? Ive enjoyed every game so far. The lack of scoring is part of the game. Brazil looked sloppy in the first half, and Portugal looked disorganized at times, but come on now.

Ive been loving every second of it. The almost goal by Ronaldo and the opportunity that Drogba had today were very exciting. To each his own though. Im lovin it.

In case you are even slightly worried 360?, you should know that most people around here probably agree with you, but they know it's just not worth discussing with some people..

If you have to watch it for years before you understand it, it isn't worth watching. I don't for one second believe that there is any secret to appreciating the sport. Either you do or you don't and you don't need to be either a rocket surgeon or a vagrant to appreciate that the game is unsophisticated and boring. All broadcast sports are basically stupid, meaningless contests that ONLY make the slightest bit of sense if there is a winner. This isn't anything sophisticated. It's just a game and games are played for the fun and they are broadcast for the enjoyment of people. If they aren't enjoyed then, much like a bad movie, they won't be watched. That's just the way things are and the ultimate outcome of that inquiry is almost totally irelevant to anything other than broadcast schedules. For crying out loud, people in this country watch stupid **** like some bimbo who ****** a lot or pretended to tries to dance dances that no one wants to watch. At least in the Biggest American Idol Dancer Losers they have an outcome since the actual show is of no redeeming value and so people can laugh at the idiots and proudly proclaim that they are idiots.

Just because lots of people like it doesn't even come close to meaning that it's not boring and stupid or that it is sophisticated or complicated. Most people are boring and stupid. Roughly half of them are of below average intelligence and they certainly (by their lack of couth and ettiquette) seem to be the adherents of Futbol.

I get not liking soccer but then to make the junior high level argument that "I don't like it so it's stupid and people who play/watch it are stupid" ???

I have seen plenty of compelling 0-0 games. Some Pele's misses are as spectacular as some of his best goals. But these games have not been compelling at all.

They remind me of Texas' gameplans vs, OU in the early 2000s. The only problem is that both teams are using the blueprint.

Obviously one of the biggest "American" complaints is the lack of scoring. Maybe this is saying the same thing, but for me its not just the lack of scoring, but the reason there is a lack of scoring. Seems to me that the main goal is to prevent getting scored on and that far surpasses the goal of trying to score. When you couple that with the fact that draws are good, you end up with both teams playing not to lose. The Americans celebrate their tie with England as one of their best games in WC history.

Just seems strange for your ultimate goal to be to tie, not win. I understand one team is outmatched, they realize they probably can't win, they know the other team has better players. So the udnermatched team plays to tie.

Of the 15 completed games, 6 were ties. So 40% of the games have no winner? That just doesn't click for the average American male. Notice the NHL recently changed their format to go to shootouts to decide ties.

Some people have no problem whatsoever fixating on an outcomeless "GAME", but can't seem to focus on a paragraph (and, yes, posting on an internet blog, bbs - whatever, particularly this dead one is, just as truly pointless as watching a sport on broadcast TV). But, it's my fault for not making my point more accessible to the soccer fans. I'll try one more time and then I'll go away.Sports are games. They really don't matter to anything of much importance. They CAN be lots of fun to watch. I have my own personal tastes and they are just that, my personal tastes! I, personally, find soccer to be boring, but not quite as boring as a bunch a Numerous ******** Simultaneously Circling Around Rednecks.

I never said that people who find soccer amusing are stupid or boring (although I DO know of at least ONE really stupid person who like soccer and posts about how much he likes the sport). I, personally, find the sport to be incredibly devoid of redeeming features. I like brussel sprouts and you don't. We're tied (except, apparently, unless we decide to quit playing soccer with no, or the same, score). Except for the ridiculous position that people who find it boring or unsophistated are somehow themselves undiscerning people who wouldn't know a diamond if they held it in their hand. That's where the soccer fans ALWAYS show their ***. That issue clearly goes to the people who don't denigrate the people who enjoy the sport which they DO denigrate. It's a matter of finesse and deft diplomacy. I'm just as inept at those skills as the average soccer fan, though perhaps not as inept as everyone.

My point was that ALL sports are not diamonds. Not soccer, not UT Footbal and for sure not UT basketball.

Sports can be a huge amount of fun. The world will be a better place if soccer fans are in a good mood. Goodness forbid they get violent like a bunch of hooligans or Ohio State fans. If one finds soccer amusing - more power to you.

But don't even think about shitting on me and acting like I'm some sort of trailer trash for not appreciating the nuances of a sport that is, well, designed for trailer park amusement.

Someone up above talked about a friend's comment that American Football was just about who was bigger, faster, stronger and was therefore not worth watching. I'm no champion of american football or ANY sport other than the one my child plays in to have a lot of fun, but that was easily one of the most moronic posts I have ever seen. I mean seriously, WTF? Are you serious? Of course it's about who is bigger, faster, stronger. Otherwise it would be Scrabble or Pictionary.

Apparently, you have to have paid your dues, with eyelids propped open in true Stanley Kubrik style, to be able to understand the Really, Really Erudite stratgeries and plays and, uh, other REALLY complicated **** that goes on in these winnerless contests of something other than speed, strength, and size.

I can't imagine that it's really a serious issue anywhere, but please, soccer fans, don't get your pants in a wad because some people on earth don't enjoy the same things you do because, speaking (without permission) on behalf of all non-soccer fans we'd like to encourage you to embrace the notion that people who just don't find the sport amusing aren't all that bad.

A tie doesnt really matter when the outcome of a single game isnt the goal. This is a tournament, and most games have results. Its a process, and one game ending in a tie is just part of the process. Sure, I wanna see goals too, but Im not gonna get my panties in a wad. (They were too expensive to get wadded up!)

Seriously, I dont think a lack of scoring is always because teams are just trying to not let the other team score. I mean, teams do play defense, so they are trying to do that, but again, its freaking hard to score at this level. Its just not easy, and I certainly dont think these guys are conciously saying "eh, we dont need to score, we'll just take a tie."
