WC Boring

World Cup is Boring. First two matches complete, South Africa versus Mexico ends tied 1-1. France versus Uruguay ends tied 0-0.

I can't fathom why millions think this sport is worth watching and live and die with every match!!

The South Africa match actually wasn't that bad. I think a lot of people were expecting Mexico to drill them, and it looked like they would based on how they dictated the game in the first half.

But yes, the France match was total ****. I'm not a fan of draws either, but scoreless draws are completely worthless. Hardly anyone got a decent look the whole game. I hope someone gets France out of the tournament quickly. Watching them play soccer reminds me of watching JJ Pearce play football.

Anyways, this Korea-Greece game is much better if you like South Korea. Greece looks like they have cement in their shoes.

Yup, it's in the Billions and the top dog on the planet for a reason. Not everybody can be expected to like it and it's all good. I cannot see how people don't like it so it's hard for me to think otherwise. Don't forget that U.S. sports are the ones that don't matter on the big picture. We are the minority with the boring sports globally.

What's the obsession with starting anti-soccer threads? Or anti-anything threads for that matter (outside of OU's suckage of course...)

If you don't like it, don't watch it, move on...get a life. I find baseball to be mind-numbingly slow and dull, but I've never been so compelled to start a thread openly bashing the neverending dip-spitting, ball swapping, box stepouts, etc. that slow the game down. I just don't watch...is it that difficult??

They don't understand the game, the nuances, the strategy and the pure class of the sport. They just don't get it and it makes them envious that the rest of the world does and has passion for it. That has to be it. I laugh at them and feel sorry for them because it's so awesome to have something I love going on when they are sports bored.

I like these threads and posts.

Are you saying we can't understand the strategy, because I would argue we don't want to know the strategy because we could care less about soccer. The only time it ever permeates onto TV is every 4 years, which hardly makes it an American following and the only time they can broadcast it is during the dead-days of summer when only baseball is going on. Can you imagine if the world cup was broadcast in the fall or the spring and it had to compete against the likes of football or basketball (hell, even hockey since it has really been on the grow since the Olympics). It wouldn't even be broadcast on a major television network and would be relegated to Versus or some crap. It's really nothing more than the Olympics, do Americans follow sports like swimming or running at all except when the Olympics are going on? Nope.

Envious? Really? I'm envious because the rest of the world follows one sport and only one sport in which a majority of the games end in a tie and a world champion is only crowned every 4 years? Do you honestly believe that? I get to follow college football, professional football, college basketball, professional basketball, college baseball, professional baseball, hockey, and I can play most if not all on an amateur level in my neighborhood. Am I sports bored right now? Let's see, we have this thing going on called the College Freaking World Series, I just saw the Hawks win the Stanley Cup, the NBA finals are going on, and the last 4-5 days have been the single craziest days in the history of all off-seasons for college football. I will admit that in between innings of todays game against TCU I watched some the USA-England game for the sole reason of wanting to stick it to England and won't be watching another game for the rest of the world cup. It was boring, the game in my eyes was pointless without a winner, and any sport that has as ****** up timing as soccer doesn't deserve to be watched. It's not that freaking hard to stop the clock for injuries or timeouts or whatever.

I stopped reading your post about the third sentence because it is full of lies and misinformation. You care enough to make a post full of BS yet claim not to care. Research your assertions, correct your mistakes if you wish to. You are wrong but it's okay. I don't think I want you to be able to enjoy soccer. I don't know that you deserve it. You have not proven it as of this time.

and a diamond is just the same as a piece of glass. I get people who don't like soccer for whatever reason, but to crap on the sport either because you just don't like it or don't get it is weak.
It is the biggest sport in the world. The second most played sport in the US (behind basketball), so to say come on here and make some ignorant comments about the sport and how 'big' it is is just pure sillyness.

And that's the other thing, you come on here and just act totally arrogant towards the fact that people don't like soccer, as if we don't understand or it or as you put it "don't deserve to like it" or some ********. If you want soccer to become big in this country, you have to win the people that don't like soccer over to your side. You have to get us to want to enjoy it so that we will watch it so that the american leagues will grow, and our kids will grow up in a environment where soccer is one of the major american sports. But no, you just talk **** to us and tell us we're uncivilized because we aren't like the rest of the world. Well guess what, I'm ******* glad I'm not and I'm also glad that I won't ever be in the soccer crowd because then I'll just be another one of the arrogant pricks who look down on non-soccer enjoyers like yourself.

People only see what they want to see. Because of the pervading anti-soccer culture within the U.S. (i.e., the sport is for sissies and it's not "cool" to be a fan), most Americans focus solely on the negatives.

They see the flopping and exaggerated injuries. They see the paucity of scoring. They see the unforgivable, unacceptable outcome of a draw. They hear the vuvuzelas. And then they conclude, "This can't be for me."

But there are also many wonderful sights to behold.

There's the ebb-and-flow in pace and possession between 22 men who each run several miles over the course of 90 minutes.

There's the artistry innate to catching a ball, distributing it across a large grass field, and convincing it to fly and curve in wondrous ways with one's feet.

There's the reality that every possession and every chance are precious because scores are rare and therefore extremely meaningful, unlike those in a sport such as, say, basketball, where it makes perfect sense to not bother watching until the fourth quarter because all that really matters is the final four or five minutes.

There's the teamwork required to break down and score upon a defense that is just as unified and determined to stop you.

There's also the incredible efforts of individuals, from keepers like Tim Howard and Vincent Enyeama to attackers like Lionel Messi and Siphiwe Tshabalala.

There's the pageantry of players, coaches and fans from all over the world descending upon one location once every four years in honor and homage to their country.

And there's the realization that, more than any other group of professional athletes, soccer players are like you and I. World Cup rosters are rife with world-class competitors who wouldn't measure 6-0 on their toes and who wouldn't weigh 160 pounds soaking wet. As athletes in other sports continue to grow thanks to every performance-enhancing drug and supplement imaginable and thanks to an emphasis on power and burst rather than overall fitness, soccer players continue to look like average Joes.

They are, in essence, everyman, so why shouldn't every man like them?

There are many more chances to play soccer for money than any other sport in the world. If a youth wishes to, they can have a good future if they are good enough.

On to enjoying the living hell out of the future games this next month brings. Can't wait for tomorrow morning.

GSJ, how do you feel about Aussie Rules Football? I adore that sport and it is so fun to watch. At least it is to me. It would be so cool to watch one in person someday.

World Cup pushes Internet to new record

World Cup fever pushed the Internet to a new record on Friday, according to measurements from Akamai.

Traffic to news sites globally started a steady climb about 6 a.m. Eastern time and peaked six hours later at noon, reaching nearly 12.1 million visitors per minute.

The traffic dipped going into the afternoon but stayed well above normal. The figures suggest that the Internet was most active during the Mexico-South Africa game and stayed heavy through the France-Uruguay game.

The day's traffic far exceeded the previous record of 8.5 million visitors per minute, which was set when Barack Obama won the U.S. presidential election in 2008.

As of Saturday afternoon, Web traffic to news sites was still heavy at 5.7 million visitors per minute.

A lot of people fathom it.

Without hitting the link, is that global or nationally? It does not matter to me but I would find it interesting if it was national in that the WC did that. I would also find it interesting if the world tuned in online for Obama.

Longhorny, take a chill pill.

Soccer is the biggest sport in the world, bar none. End of discussion. Just because a game ends 1-1 does not make it boring. So they dont score often enough for you. Sucks for you. You just cant handle the fact that soccer is the biggest thing EVER. It naws at you and you hate it. Sorry dude.

It isnt easy to score in soccer, hence the low scores. Its ALOT easier to score points in American sports. ALOT. Its just the nature of the game. Its HARD.

I hate MLB. I hate turning on the radio every night and on one channel its the crappy Astros, and on the other channel its Triple A baseball. Really? Minor league baseball? MLB is boring as hell, there are a million meaningless games, and half the players are fat as hell.

We can nit pick about EVERY sport. All of them. Football players have to wear layer and layer of body armor for protection. What are they, a bunch of wimps? Soccer players take cleats to the face and they dont wear helmets. Does that make them more manly than football players with shock absorbing helmets and facemasks with visors that cover their eyes? We can go on and on and on and on.

Everybody says the same old ****, soccer must be the best thing because it's the most popular in the world (except USA). Not really much of a world if it doesn't involve the USA imo, but I guess I'm not a civilized limey or frog. Nazism may have been the most popular thing in Germany in the 30's, but that doesn't mean it was the greatest thing EVER!

How about this Longhorny.

Soccer is the cheapest most accessible sport for the world's communities. A ball and some land.

No bats, no ice, no fancy gear, no poles, no hoops.

Even a country like North Korea can field a soccer team. And if that doesn't make it "elite" enough (or expensive enough for you), tough ****. (see how I can play your rhetorical games?).
