UTSA vs Texas

Pimp Daddy
It's the home opener on this wonderful new Hornfans site. It's been 40 years since the Disch opened and it's still around for yet another season.

Texas fresh from it's rousing split against Rice in Houston opens against the UTSA Roadrunners on what must be a pretty frigid night at the Disch. I know from experience how cold it can get there and how equally hot it can and will be there later.

I going to get the Texas lineup and be back

Texas lineup for the home opener:

Johnson-LF
Shaw-RF
Hinojosa-SS
Marlow-2B
Barrera-1B
Boswell-3B
McCann-DH
Cantu-C
Gurwitz-CF
Mayes-RHP

Freshman Connor Mayes gets the start tonight for Texas and depending on how he rounds into form he might even find himself in the weekend starting rotation as he has great stuff and pitched well in the fall

The Roadrunners are 2-1 on the young season after taking 2-3 from what is now called UL- Lafayette.

Keving Markham leads for UTSA and plays in center.
He steps in on the left side and Mayes takes the hill.
A ground ball up the middle is gobbled up Hinojosa and a 6-3 out starts the home season.

Another left handed hitter is Matt Holston in left field tonight.
He K's swinging for two away.
Two away for right handed hitter John Borman.
A pop to shallow right and Marlow ranges out for the catch to retire the side in order.

Texas comes to bat in the home opener for it's first home hacks of the year.

Johnson leads off for the Horns against UTSA big right hander Aaron Burns.
Ben bats right and grounds a one hopper back to the mound and a 1-3 starts things for Texas and one down.

Shaw bats lefty up next and slices a liner to left center for a single.

One on and one out for Hinojosa as he stands in from the right side.
He scalds a liner through the hole on the left side to put two on.

Marlow up with two on and one down batting lefty.
He flies to right for two away as the runners hold.

Barrera bats righty with still two on and now two away.
Anything to the outfield should score Shaw.
That is what we get as a grounder on the right side goes through and the throw from righ is way late.

Texas leads 1-0.

Boswell up with runners at first and second and two down.
He bats from the left side and a full count is reached.
The runners go and he draws a walk to load the bases.

Freshman McCann the DH bats right handed with the bases juiced and two down.
He drove home the winning run against Rice Sunday.
The pitching coach comes out and now goes back.
McCann steps in and he rolls a ball out to short and the 6-3 out retires the side.

Texas dents the scoreboard in it's first try and lead 1-0 after one.

Mayes out for his second inning of work.

Tyler Straub, the first baseman leads off from the right side for UTSA.
A slow change is swung on and missed for a K and one away.

Mitchell Matulia is the DH, a righty hitter and a comebacker to Mayes is an easy 1-3 out two.

Skyler Valentine, a righty swinger bats with two down and down.
A ground ball to Hinojosa is fielded cleanly, but his throw is wide for an error.

So T.J. Pickering bats with two down and one on.
The righty hitter steps in ball in the dirt handcuffs Cantu and the runner moves up on a wild pitch.
The count is full now to Pickering and another ground ball to C.J. is played perfectly this time for a 6-3 third out to retire the side.

Bottom of the second and Texas leads 1-0.

Burns back out for his second inning on the mound.

The Freshman catcher Cantu leads off for the Horns at the bottom of the order batting right handed.
He grounds sharply up the middle off the glove of Burns and it's behind him and goes as an infield hit.

One on for Gurwitz with nobody on.
The right handed hitter looks to bunt and gets the sac down 1-3 for one down

Johnson, at the top of the order back up with Cantu in scoring position at second and one down.

The pitching coach is out again and he brings the hook for Burns.

Pitching change.

The new pitcher is lefty Jaryd Hodgson.

Johnson back in the box with Cantu at second and one down.
A fly ball to right is the second out.

Shaw bats again and he needs a single as he did his first at bat for a possible Texas tally.
A foul pop on the right side is squeezed by the first baseman to end the threat.

Two gone in the season home opener and Texas leads 1-0.

Mayes still on the hill for the Horns in the third.

Geonte Jackson, a right handed batter leads off for UTSA.
A cue shot goes toward second and Marlow charges and bare hands and makes a sparkling 4-3 put out for one away.

A right hander Trent Bowes, lines a ball that Johnson misjudged in left and it's over his head and to the wall for a double.

Markham the lead off hitter grounds behind the third base bag and the long throw by Boswell is not in time to put two on with the infield hit.

Two on and one down for Hilston and here comes Skip out for a visit.
The lefty hitter is back in now as Skip is back in the dugout.
A ground ball to second goes 4-6-3 and the DP gets Mayes and Texas out of the jam.

Bottom of the third arrives and Texas leads 1-0.

Hodgson back out on the mound for UTSA.

Hinojosa leads off for the Horns in their half of the third.
He draws a lead off walk.

Marlow up at clean up with one on.
He squares and fouls off two attempts.
Then the count runs full and maybe C.J. is off on the pitch.
A long fly ball to right dies in the cold air and it's one down.

Barrera with the lone rbi in the game is up again.
He lines a shot over the left fielders head for a double and another rbi as Hinojosa scores.

Texas leads 2-0.

Boswell bats with a man on second and one out.
The count runs full and he chases an outside pitch for a swinging K after the 2-3 put out is completed.

Two down for McCann, the DH and Barrera still on second.
He also waves and misses a change and K's to retire the side

Texas tacks on one more run and leads 2-0 after three.

Ty Marlow comes in to pitch the fourth for Texas coming back from injury.

Bormann, the big right handed hitter leads off for the Roadrunners.
The count goes full before a high and inside pitch hits Bormann on the helmet.
He goes to first on the HBP.

It looks like Marlow hurt himself on that pitch and that is tough for Ty on his first action back.
Skip is out and the change is being made.

Pitching change.

Pitching now for Texas is lefty John Malmin, who saw some action again Rice over the weekend.

He gets as many pitches as he deems he needs coming in for the injured Marlow.
What hurts also about Marlow is you may lose him also as a position player also and a pinch hitter.

Straub is Malmin's first hitter to face.
Another full count and a line drive to center carries to Gurwitz and it nearly went over his head as he reached high to make the catch for one away.

The lefty DH Matulia now faces a lefty in Malmin with one away and one on.
A slow chopper to the left side is cut off by Boswell and his only play is to first for the 6-3 second out.

Vanlentine is up with two down and a runner in scoring position.
A liner just over Hinojosa is a rbi single to left.

Texas leads 2-1.

T.J. Pickering bats with one on and two down.
A shallow fly to center ends the inning.

UTSA gets on the board, but Texas leads 2-1 to the bottom of four.

Hodgson is still in for UTSA on the hill in the Texas fourth.

Cantu leads off for the Horns.
The count runs full the Longhorn catcher and he takes a high and wide one for another lead walk for the Horns.

Gurwitz bats with one on and the bunt is no doubt in order here.
Before the nine hole hitter steps in, out comes the coach and a change is made.

Pitching change.

The new UTSA hurler is right hander is Jeremy Filipek, a senior.

Gurwitz steps in and he does square to bunt and can't get it down on two tries.
Then three pitches out of the zone fills the count and Cantu could be moving on the pitch.
A lazy fly ball to left keeps Cantu at first on the first out.

Johnson again up at the top of the Texas order.
He blasts one over the center fielders's head and Cantu comes all the way around and beats the relay throw and it's another run for Texas on the double.

Texas leads 3-1.

Shaw up and he is hit by an inside pitch.

Two on and one down for Hinojosa.
A one hopper to the plate escapes the catcher and the wild pitch moves the runners to second and third.
A comebacker to the mound holds the runners and the 1-3 out is two away.

That brings out the UTSA coach again and he makes another change.

Pitching change.

The latest pitcher for UTSA is lefty Douglas Sefcik to face Marlow.

He bats with two in scoring position and two outs.
He lines a shot to second to retire the side.

Texas adds one more and leads 3-1 after four.

Augie says Ty Marlow has a pulled groin, but doesn't how bad yet.

Malmin is still in there for Texas in the fifth.

Jackson leads off for the Roadrunners from the right side of the plate.
A liner into center is a lead single to put a man on.

Bowles bats from the right side with one on.
He hacks at a head high fast ball for a K and one down.

Markham bats at the top of the order bats with one on and one down.
His grounder to third is a 5-4 force for two away.

Hilston, from the lefty side bats with two down and one on.
A fly ball to left center and Shaw comes ranging over and makes the catch to retire the side.

Halfway through the home opener and Texas leads 3-1.

Barrera leads off the fifth for Texas against Sefcik, still in for UTSA.

Tres has had a good night with two hits and two rbi's.
He flies out to center for his first out of the night and one down.

Boswell bats with one down.
He takes a fast ball for a called third strike and two away.

McCann bats with two away and the bases empty.
He sends a liner down the line in left for a stand up double.

Cantu bats with a runner on second and two down.
He flies out to right and that's the inning.

Five played at the Disch and Texas leads 3-1.

The new Texas pitcher is right hander Tyler Schimpf.

Bormann leads off for the Roadrunners in the sixth.
The count runs full and a high fast ball is cut on and whiffed for a K and one away.

Straub bats with one out.
He draws a walk on a full count pitch.

One on and one away for lefty Matulia.
A wild pitch puts the runner on second.
A 2-0 count brings out Skip as Schimpf has lost his release point it seems and is over throwing.
He walks him on four pitches.

Skip back out and that's it for Tyler.

Pitching change.

Travis Duke, the veteran lefty is in now for the Horns with the tying runs on and one down.

He faces Valentine, who has the only rbi for UTSA.
A ground ball goes into left for another rbi for Valentine.

Texas leads 3-2.

A pinch runner comes in for Valentine.

Pickering bats with runners on first and second and one down.
The game slows to a crawl as Duke keeps checking runnners and the batter steps out.
The runners go and a foul pop is caught by Cantu for two down.

Jackson bats with two down and two on.
He lifts a foul pop and then it tails maybe fair, but Shaw dives back toward the left field line and and makes a great catch that might have given UTSA the lead if it had landed fair.

Bottom of six and UTSA cuts the Texas lead to 3-2.

Sefcik has done a good job and is still in there in the Texas sixth.

Gurwitz leads off and Texas needs to get control back of his game.
A liner to the gap in right center and the center fielder Markham, with good speed makes the running catch for one away.

Johnson brings the top of the order around again.
He bats with one away and grounds a sharp ground ball through the hole on the right side for a single.

Would like for Johnson to go here and use that great Speed.

Shaw up can also handle the bat and maybe a hit and run is in order.
He puts down a bunt on the left side and the left handed pitcher has to field and wheel and throw and not in time.
The bunt single puts two on.

Hinojosa comes up now with two on and one away and tries to extend the Horn lead.
Here comes the UTSA coach again and yet another change is made.

Pitching change again.

A right hander is Nolan Savage from Lubbock.

Hinojosa steps in against him.
A ground ball to the right side toward the hole is fielded and the 4-3 out is two down as the runners move up.

B. Marlow up with two runners in scoring position and two down.
Need a clutch hit to put some distance between the teams.
Again it doesn't happen as a fly ball to center strands two more and retires the side.

Six innings played and Texas leads 3-2.

Hilarious! A kid in the stands acted like he was going to give 5 to a UTSA player running by. Instead the kid pulled his hand back and ran it though his hair. The UTSA player laughed. :smile1:

Duke returns more for more work in the UTSA seventh.

Jackson leads off for the Roadrunners from the right side.
A hopper back to Duke goes 1-3 for one away.

Markham bats with one down and he grounds out to third and a quick second out.

Hilston up again with two away.
The lefty hitter bunts down the line on the left side and like Shaw for Texas beats the throw for an infield hit.

Bormann, the right handed hitter grounds one up the middle and Hinojosa gets to it, but after getting up his throw is late for another infield hit.

Straub up with the tying run in scoring position is up with two down.

Skip is out again and another change is made as this game is crawling along at a snail's pace.

Pitching change.

Come on Horns, get that last out. This is hard to watch. I know we are going to improve, but watching them right now is not fun.

The new Texas pitcher is freshman right hander Jake McKenzie who pitched and played third well in the Rice series.

He faces a righty hitter in Straub with two on and two down and it's a big moment in htis one.
He grounds to Marlow and he takes it to the bag for a 4U third out to retire the side.

They stretch at the frigid Disch and Texas leads the home opener 3-2.

Savage is back to the hill for UTSA.

Barrera leads off and a jam shot squibber goes between third and short and Barrera just beats the throw by the third baseman for yet another infield hit in this game.

Boswell on a 2-0 count doesn't bunt and singles by he second baseman for a single to put two on.

McCann is up and I bet he bunts.
A high pitch and guess what? The UTSA coach who has worn a path to the mound tonight is out again.
He leaves Savage in.
McCann back in the righty box and he pops up the bunt and Savage dives and makes the catch for one down.
Bad execution and a nice play keep the runners at first and second.

Cantu bats with one down and two on and tries to stretch the Horn lead.
He draws a walk to load the bases.

Gurwitz up with the sacks loaded and he has the chance to bring some runs home.
He is way off stride and waves and misses out an outside curve for a swinging K and two down.

Johnson up with two down and the bases loaded.
The hottest hitter on the team grounds a single up the middle and two runs score and the ball goes under the center fielder's glove and it goes to the wall and that brings in everybody.
It's a single and then a three base error and that may very well put this one away. Two rbi's on the hit for Johnson.

Texas leads 7-2.

And of course a pitching change.
