Uh Oh... Knox-Knox has de-comitted!

If Mack AND the recruit agree that both UT AND the recruit are committed to each other
then Mack is fully justified at requiring the recruit to honor the agreement. And if a kid
learns early on in life that agreements are one-sided then he has learned a wrong
approach to life, which will not serve him well.
Sorry about Knox being gone, but we will move on and be better off. After all, if he
had been permitted to sign AFTER this situation, what would the other recruits think?
That there was an "out" after all, and that Mack lied when he said no visits after
committing? Mack did the right thing.

Well, both of those guys are good coaches but are not known for high character, themselves,
so why should they care? Of three coaches (those two and Mack) which has the best
character? Obvious answer.

Mack's policy has been misrepresented. It is this:

Don't commit until you are ready to actually commit. If you commit to us and continue to go on other visits, we will continue to recruit other players for your spot.

Bevo, you are spot on. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with spelling out an
agreement and then sticking to it. That is what what so many people do not get.

Earl would not have even visited ou if the no visit rule was explained to him before he gave his word.

Well, I hope you guys who feel so strongly about players honoring committments feel the same way about the lack of intergrity shown by Shiro Davis and Daje Johnson. These two guys gave their word to LSU and TCU and changed their minds at the last minute. Shame, shame shame.

What makes you so sure that Earl would not have changed his mind? Note in the article below, that he had already "committed" but still had doubts. What if DKR had told him, "If you visit OU, we'll look for another back to take your place."? Earl would have thought, "Yeah sure."

Below from ESPN...

"After in-home visits from OU head coach Barry Switzer and Texas head coach Darrell Royal, Campbell narrowed his list to the Sooners and Longhorns. He made a campus visit in Norman but committed to UT during his campus visit in Austin. According to his official website, Campbell was still unsure as signing day neared, so he prayed. "God, if it's your will that I should attend the University of Texas, then I'll get up during the night to pee. If not, if I sleep through the night, then I'll know your choice for me will be the University of Oklahoma."

"Clearly, Campbell did not sleep through the night. And the Sooners, particularly Coach Switzer, will always lament his active bladder. His 25-yard touchdown run against the Sooners during his Heisman-winning season in 1977 is one of the "go-to" highlights of Campbell's days in a Longhorns uniform."

Did they violate a stated position by the coaches at LSU and TCU when they did that? If the LSU/TCU position had been if you commit, we commit, and they dishonored their commitment then yes, shame. But if they did so in an environment that didn't take commit to mean commit, then it's no big deal.

Okay I got it now. I was confused. When all the other schools say "commit" they don't really mean "commit", so it's no big deal, as you say, when they decommit cause it wasn't really commit in the first place But when Texas says commit, then that's a really fo-real bonifide commit. Cause we're TEXAS. So yeah....these kids should know the difference between a Texas "commit" and one of those infidel schools' "commit".

BTW, did you go back and read what you wrote before you pressed "send"?

Poor kid.
I see a runny nose & frozen fingers in his future.....
He could've lived in Austin for 4 years while rooming & playing with his best friend.

Oh well. To each his own.....

Yeah Knox and Gresham decided to tempt fate and see if Mack was true to his word about yanking scholarships if they kept taking visits. I don't blame either of them or Mack. I still think the policy will bite us in the ***, especially with the 4-or-5-star recruits that everyone keeps saying we're whiffing on.

Is this because it's guaranteed that 4 and 5 stars pan out, perform and end up playing in the NFL? The odds and facts say otherwise. I want kids here that want to be here and will give their heart to it. I also understand this is a tough decision and one of the most important for a young man to make in his life. They have a ton of information and disinformation coming at them a million miles an hour to complicate matters. Everybody is in their ear.

In the end it's either Texas or it isn't. We can all find examples of 5 stars that thrived and that fell on their butt. Same with 3 stars. It's a crapshoot and the facts are that HS ranking does not equal where a young man ends up as a man 4 years later. Go look at rosters of NFL teams, where players come from and how many coaches/programs "whiffed" on future NFL level talent. Tons of big name program players don't pan out.

This stuff is just too easy:

Who needs all those 4 and 5 star guys? Bunch of whinny prima-donnas who don’t pan out anyway. Give me a good 3 start player who’s hungry and wants to be here – look at Colt. I’m so fired up about this class.

CAN YOU SMELL WHAT MACK IS COOKIING!!!!???!!!

Face the facts. Texas is getting 3 star talent because the 4 and 5 star players no longer want to come to Texas. This isn't some "Diamond in the Rough" stategy by Mack and Co.

They have always taken highly rated players in the past, when they could, to much and nauseating fanfare by posters on this board from 98-03, when it finally became appartent that even with all 4 and 5 star players Texas would still usually get beat by OU, and shown up a few other times as well.

After 3 poor years, with ATM having an excellent year in the best football conference, there's just no buzz or excitment left for the best football players to come to Texas.

Will some of those players do well, and maybe play better than a 4 or 5 star? Yes, but not on average. The best high school players are not 3 star rated. And yet that's what Texas is getting in.

I wonder if we will ever find, much less hire, a football coach that is as smart as our posters. Could it really happen?

Not sure what others will make of this but here is interesting detail. Below show the schools selected for the 21 committed recruits from the state of Texas in the 2014 Rivals' Top 250...

Texas - 6
A&M - 5
Baylor - 3
LSU - 2
TENN - 1
Bama - 1
Ohio St. - 1
Oklahoma - 1
Stanford - 1

It is correct we are not getting as many top guys as the past, yet we are leading with the most Texas recruits in the Top 250 according to Rivals.

10 are going Big 12, 9 are going SEC. A&M's rise not only pulled some recruits, but the spotlight they cast on the SEC also made an impact. Texas will gain ground back with a solid season in 2014.

And the 2015 Texas class is already looking as the falling trend is changed as is. We are cleaning up for 2015. It's all good, we'll be back in business snagging tons of the best just as before.

I'd be very careful when discrediting several of the 3-stars, we have some very solid players in there that will prove to be excellent college players. Just watch.

I don’t think it means much, to be honest. Of the top 250 players, less than 10% have committed, and Texas has 3 more of them than Baylor. It’s hardly like Texas is locking down the top talent leaving nothing for anyone else.

Look, 10 years ago people on this board were laughing at the number of 3 star players ATM was getting, compared to Texas. And for the most part they were right – ATM was terrible in the 00’s.

Now that Texas is mostly getting 3 star players, they’re all diamonds in the rough, that are going to pan out, you’ll see. Take off the blinders and face the facts. The best high school players don’t want to come to Texas.
