U of I Game

Fantastic job by the bats!
What a lineup!

Grubbs was solid. He inherited a big mess, mitigated the harm, and pitched scoreless ball in all of his full innings through the Eighth.

Bing looked decent, until he didn’t……..

I think we’ll see more of this Saunier relief pitcher.

Grubbs or Volantis might be starting on Sundays in the near future.

Or Coach might want to use Grubbs as the fireman/cleanup crew and let him go plenty of innings after he cleans up the mess. That seems to be the pattern for Grubbs early this year.

Another possibility is the “other Flores”—the one that pitches. He may not just be throwing on weekdays for long.

Interestingly, thus far Coach and pitching coach seem to prefer hulking big men who can throw in the upper 90s (McCreary, Rerick) to leaner crafty wizards who can throw nearly unhittable breaking stuff (Tumis, Hudson Hamilton). Of course, both of the latter can hit the mid 90s. Maybe they’re showing lousy control in practice or something….?

From what I’ve seen, the top 25% of the SEC batting lineups would light up McCreary and Rerick before they could touch Tumis. The only thing I can figure out is that he may be showing poor control in practice, or showing up late or something, or they’re injured but such injuries have not been disclosed (could be).

Both Tumis and Hamilton have nasty, filthy, bada$$ breaking stuff. And it’s objectively verifiable as well—Hudson Hamilton’s Spin rates are easily better than most major leaguers, and Tumis’s aren’t far off.
