Tyler Hansbrough

No, I compared the logic of saying that a center isn't as good of a player because he can't shoot 3s. It works just as well for a player who isn't on Duncan's level. Should we have criticized LaMarcus Alridge and Chris Mihm for not having a 3-point shot?

A guy goes for 28 and 13 in the elite 8 and people are ragging on him for irrelevant reasons such as "He won't be a lottery pick in the NBA".

The comment was develop a mid-range jumper. Interesting to look back at the 97 NBA draft, first 10 picks.
1- Tim Duncan
2- Keith Van Horn
3- Chauncey Billups
4- Antonio Daniels
5- Tony Battie
6- Ron Mercer
7- Tim Thomas
8- Adonal Foyle
9- Tracy McGrady
10- Danny Fortson

I think you guys are missing the right NBA player comparison to Hansbrough. I'd argue he's Nick Collison. Hasbrough is listed at 6'9" 250lbs. Collison is 6'10" 255lbs. Neither is known to be particularly athletic but rather are smart hustle players. Both played on very talented teams which most certainly aided their college statistics.

Collison's Sr. season stats: 18.5PPG, 10RPG, 1.9BPG, .554FG%
Hansbrough Jr. season stats: 22.3PPG, 10.3RPG, 0.4BPG, .542FG%

Like Collison, Hansbrough will not be able to generate his own shot in the NBA so he'll be at the mercy of his teammates. Both lack the height and size to be effective scorers inside so their scoring will come on mid-range jumpers and offensive putbacks.

I could easily see Hansbrough matching Collison's career projectory. He'll eventually average 9-10RPG due to his hustle but he'll never be more than a 15PPG scorer and he won't even be the defender that Collison is.

UCLA's Kevin Love has much more upside longterm than Hansbrough, IMHO. He's 6-10 271lbs at a Tr Fr. He's ~20lbs heavier than Hansbrough now and a couple of years younger. That wide body will be much more advantageous in the NBA. Hopefully he'll stick around in college another 1-2 years to develop his game before jumping to the NBA.

I saw Hansbrough in a tv interview today - I could not believe how skinny and how young he looked. Quite a bit different from his kinda wild-eyed big guy look on the court. Couldn't tell his height, but his weight could be liberally listed.

Hook'em!!!

Husker is right. Hansbrough will likely have an NBA career similar to Collison's.

And while Curry has been the best shooter, Derrick Rose has been the best player in the tournament so far IMO.

The Collison comparison is actually a pretty good one. You still have a point though, I was just waiting for someone to say that in the NBA Hansbrough would only be a possession receiver.

The Collison comparison is just about perfect.

As for the best player in the tourney, there is no question it's Derrick Rose. We've played some damn good players this year, Love, Beasley, Lopez, Griffin, and not one of them scared me with the ball like Rose did. The guy is amazing.

As an aside...Hansbrough won the AP Player of the Year award with Beasley finishing #2. That shouldn't surprise anyone though.

If hansbrough is 6'10 then I'm about 6'5. (note: i'm actually just under 6'1)

I'd be shocked he was more than 6'8; I'd expect something like 6'7 with shoes on.

good players get better in the media's eyes when they put on tarheel blue. there is probably a good list to be made as evidence, and sean may is on it. is marvin williams still with atlanta? don't know much about his nba career, but he was a talented non starter that got good minutes for carolina and was a top, what, 5 pick?

Williams is averaging 15/6 in 34min/game for Atlanta which isn't bad for his 3rd season albeit not great.

Williams was also a top 3 player coming out of HS so his talent and draft position is attributable just as much to him as UNC. OJ Mayo will be a top 5 pick out of USC this year for the same reason. They both were on the NBA's radar for a LONG time.

another name that come to mind:

jr reid - #5 pick in 1989. played in france in 1996. wiki also notes that he was the #1 high school recruit his senior year, so maybe his draft position was as much a part of that as anything.
