Hawaii is not "woke" or politically correct though. Hawaii voters strongly rejected a gay marriage bill. Their state supreme court is what pushed that on them. I was living out there during that big controversy.

Almost everything in the islands is based on ethnicity, so much so that's it's difficult for most mainlanders to fathom. The Filipinos out there were overwhelmingly opposed to gay marriage. I think this is the most numerous ethnic group in the State. At the time, the Governor Ben Cayetano was a Filipino. They're usually either Catholic, Pentecostal, or members of a weird ethno-religious cult called Iglesio Ni Cristo (that claims Jesus Christ was a Filipino and some guy named Felix Manalo was a prophet ). The Portagees--overwhelmingly Catholic and generally opposed. The AJAs mostly didn't care one way or the other. Ditto for the Chinese and Koreans. My sense was the Hawaiians didn't really care, but they came to see it as a bunch of Mainlanders trying to push it on them--because of that, they mostly opposed it. Samoan = Mormon = opposed to gay marriage. The (non-military) Caucasians were probably the only group generally in favor of gay marriage--other than the activist judiciary. The military Caucasians, Blacks, and Hispanics were generally apolitical--other than voting absentee for President.

For another clear example of non-woke Hawaii: In Hawaii, ethnic/racial jokes are also seen as an acceptable form of humor. It's everywhere, from the beaches, to the bus stops, to the workplaces, at every level of society, top to bottom. And their humor picks on every racial/ethnic group that sets foot on the islands in significant numbers. That's not the case in the Mainland. It's a major non-woke cultural difference.

What you're saying seems to make sense. However, the politicians they send to Washington seem pretty hardcore left beyond economic issues and seem pretty politically correct. For example, I would point to Mazie Hirono's dumbass controversy about the term "sexual preference." I also think the current generation is worse than the previous. I think Hirono and Schatz are more shrill than Inouye and Akaka were.

Without knowing as much as you do about the specifics of Hawaiian politics, I would speculate that Hawaii may not be hardcore left on social issues but that white woke liberals have outsized influence basically because of the partisanship of ethnic minorites (like in California, which just rejected affirmative action at the same time that it cock-slapped Donald Trump by 30 points). The minorities themselves aren't that socially left, but they vote heavily Democratic because of economic issues and identity politics. However, they have no money to finance a party or candidates, so they have to play ball on social issues with white hardcore liberals who have money in order to win. And of course, if you get on the wrong side of them, they'll crap on you and bankroll your opponents in primary elections, so the white liberals basically are gatekeepers for the Party. They'd be the ones to shitcan Tulsi, despite her hotness.

There are twists to it.

Aside from the high-ranking military leadership, the Caucasians haven't been running things out there for 50 years or more. A big, powerful, and exceptionally greedy union (the ILWU) is nearly untouchable in Hawaii, and commands much power over the tourist industry, construction, and state government. Where else does a longshoreman's union represent almost every hotel employee and construction worker in the state...? That's unusual. If Biden pushes his union stuff too far, more of the country could look like this. (and I'm not talking about the beautiful beaches and waterfalls...)

It's something of an oddball state, and it seems to favor oddball characters like Tulsi. I don't think she could have been elected in Illinois or North Carolina, etc.
