Top 5 SNL cast members of all time

eyesoftexas just saved me plenty of typing as his list is spot-on. Ferrel had greater range than Chase but Chevy took a show that was almost stillborn & in the single season he was there made it an institution. Hard to knock either one out of the top 5.

How about a top 5 that "saved the show" from cancellation.

Murphy
Carvey
Hartman
Ferrell
Fey (also head writer)

Not saying these are the best ever, but these cast members you could argue revitalized the show when people were writing it's obituary. Either by anchoring it or energizing it.

I think the original cast was near perfect, and it was extremely hard, but I was trying to span the gap through the years. In that sense I'm embarrassed that I put Aykroyd outside of my top 10, and I could easily bump him up all of the way into the 4/5 argument. He probably SHOULD be swapped with Chase in my list.

I think the top two names can not be argued, though. Belushi and Murphy made the show what it was and what it is. I personally thought that Hartman was the funniest man on the planet, so I'm happy to slide him in third. 4 & 5 are just hard spots to seed.

Horatio Sanz takes spots 1-5 as the worst cast member of all-time

to whoever said Billy Crystal - he was there one year. He didn't do enough in one year to even be considered

to whoever said Mike Myers and listed Shrek and Austin Powers....uhh, he did those characters after SNL. They shouldn't be used for comparison

Why not do a bottom 5?

1. Kenan Thompson
2. Horatio Sanz
3. Charles Rocket
4. Gary Kroeger
5. Randy Quaid

Loved the show back in the day, haven't watched much in years.
Would have trouble paring the list down to five:
John Belushi
Gilda Radner
Bill Murray
Dana Carvey
Jane Curtain
Dan Akroyd
Eddie Murphy
Phil Hartman
OK, should include Chris Farley and Garrett Morris.
And Steve Martin hosted so often he seemed like a regular cast member, he should be on the list.

Have fun telling one of these guys they don't make it.

Belushi
Murphy
Farley
Farrell
Carvey
Hartman

I would also say that Sandler, Aykroyd, and Nealon are worthy of consideration. That doesn't even mention others who were great or went on to greatness such as Lovitz, Chris Rock, Mike Myers, and so on. I also like Chris Kattan, but he is clearly not on the same level as those mentioned above. Ellen Cleghorn deserves some mention on the funniest women list. She was usually pretty awesome.

Jimmy Fallon should be at or near the top of biggest disgraces to step foot on the SNL set.

Kevin Nealon simply wasn't suited for SNL, too low key to really step up and speak out. But his work since then has been great

1. Belushi
2. Michael O' Donahough
3. Chase
4. Radner
tie for 5th
5. Ackroyd / Murphy / Morris / Murray

Best Host

tie between Martin and Buck Henry

Other greats appearing on the show

Mr Bill, Andy Kaufman

The Late Charles "Oh, man, its the first time I've ever been shot in my life. I'd like to know who ******* did it", Rocket

Ok maybe not him but how about:

John Belusi
Dan Aykroyd
Eddie Murphy
Chris Farley
Phil Hartman

For me, I have to say actors that could a wide variety of characters and who were damned good at all of them. -

Hammond
Hartman
Ferrell
Carvey

and maybe

Crystal

but I don't know about #5. For all the rest, they were the heart and sole of the shows while they were there. Mike Myers was very strong during the Carvey/Hartman time. Really, for number 5 I would choose out of:

Crystal, Myers, Eddie Murphy, Farley, Murray, and Belushi (although Akroyd was the heart and sole during those years, but I prefer Bill Murray).

And although I was tiny, I was watching from the start.

Top 5 Black male cast members:

Eddie Murphy
Garrett Morris
Tim Meadows
Chris Rock
Tracy Morgan

Sorry Keenan and Finesse

Wow, that list didn't take long.

Crystal did several bits which I really liked. My favorite was probably him and Christopher Guest as the masochistic construction workers. I wouldn't put him in my top 10, but Armando was the Austin Powers of his day.

Sanz is not one of the worst.

Jay Mohr has to be there. Michael McKean?

No mention of Vickie Jackson? Jan Hooks was pretty good.

How about the best anchor on the show? Miller or Mcdonald?
