Top 5 SNL cast members of all time

First of all, I don't think SNL has ever been this bad, despite a decent roster. Second, my list is going to be way different than some of our older posters. I didn't watch during the Murphy/Dan Akroyd/Martin days.

Feel free to turn this into an snl thread. You can make a list for the 5 worst snl members, worst era ever, 5 most underrated.......

Does Michaels know how bad it is right now? Can they turn it around:

Anyways, my top 5:

5. John Belushi -would likely be higher, but I've only seen a few of his skits, but the few I've seen he's hilarious. Again, I'm sure this would go for Murphy, etc.

4. Chris Farley -Lovable big guy. Impeccable timing.

3.Will Ferrell- I'll bet Will is pretty polarizing. I think alot of you would consider him a one trick pony, but he makes me laugh.

2.Adam Sandler -not my favorite, but he was very good for a long time, but he also annoys the crap out of me.

1. Phil Hartman- I think he's the best overall performer and he didn't have to go slapstick or really embelish his physical movements to get a laugh. He was just a regular guy.

Also, Darryl Hammond is really underrated. If you can do both Gore and Clinton, you've got skills.

alot of talent has walked on that stage.

Adam Sandler over Eddie Murphy?

Murphy was to the 80's what Ferrell was to his era: millions of Americans tuned in every week just to see THAT guy.

I love Adam Sandler, but no way he's top-5.

Just my .02.

Good topic, btw.

Edit: Would also point out that when Murphy joined the cast, the show was written off for dead (like it is now), and he put the show on his back and brought it back to being a weekly "Did-you-see-that-skit?" phenomenon.

I know, I really want to drop Sandler, and I know Murphy and hell, maybe even steve Martin is more talented, but Sandler was very good for a while. Though, admittedly he rubs me the wrong way at times.

I've got Alec Baldwin as my favorite host.

5-1: Farley, Akroyd, Hartman, Murray, Belushi

FYI, Steve Martin was never a cast member, and I'll second Alec Baldwin as best host, with Walken right on his heels...

Yeah Steve Martin was never on the cast, but he hosted that muthafucka a million times and guest starred a few other times so I understand the confusion.

Sandler was the Piscopo/Fallon of his era. Some funny moments, but shouldn't even sniff the Top 5.

The Men:
Belushi
Murphy
Hartman
Farley
Ferrell

The Women:
Radner
Hooks
Shannon
Poehler
Oteri

Also Receiving Votes:
Aykroyd, Lovitz, Carvey, Myers, Hammond

LTT, if you are maintaining seperate lists for men and women, then you have to add in Jane Curtain and Nora Dunn at least to the also rans.

That said, Darrell Hammond isn't getting nearly enough love in this thread. The dude has been playing Hartman's role of Anchor for 12 years. No one has said the "live from..." more than him in the history of the show.

Hammond does the best impressions, maybe a close second to Phil. They both do a great Bill Clinton, I don't even know a close third.

darrell hammond has only longevity going for him. he's been on the show nearly every season i've watched, when has he ever been the "star?" hell, he got outshined by jimmy fallon.

anyway, i'm 26. sandler and carvey would replace belushi and murphy for me on what seems to be the consensus list so far.

Hartman was never the star either, but make no mistake he was the heart of the show. Hammond plays the same role.

I'm sorry, but any list that isn't topped with "John Belushi" is retarded. The guy defined Saturday Night Live.

I'd go:

1. John Belushi
2. Chevy Chase
3. Gilda Radner
4. Eddie Murphy
5. Phil Hartman

I'm Chevy Chase and you're not.

Jane, you ignorant slut.

No love for Chevy???

Tim Meadows has been rock solid. And he plays the straight guy well as well.

Meyers, I don't know. Certainly a staple, but never stood out to me. Though, he had Wayne's World.

I'm 31, SNL had a wicked good run I guess from when I was 16-26. Tight cast. Franken has some talent, but his character always had that annoying look on his face.

The guys on there now, yikes. Thompson, Mitchell??????

I just found a the list of cast members.

I think the list of women is clear:
Radner
Curtain
Dunn
Shannon
Oteri (maybe Wiig)

I think the men are less clear, but here are my top ten (no order):
John Belushi
Chevy Chase
Bill Murray
Eddie Murphy
Dana Carvey
Phil Hartman
Mike Myers
Chris Farley
Will Ferrell
Darrell Hammond

With Lovitz and Aykroyd as also rans.

Murphy saved SNL so he has to be there.
Belushi is the patron saint of SNL so he has to be there.
Hartman is my personal favorite so he is on the list.

So who gets spots 4 & 5? I guess personally I'd have to say Chase and Ferrell, but it hurts to leave off Murray and Farley.

I'm obviously in the minority here, but I thought Sandler's better days were after SNL. I found him to be a whiny, obnoxious character in 7/10 skits (OperaMan is the first that comes to mind).

I can't pick a Top 5, but the Top 6 is a no-brainer:
John Belushi
Chevy Chase
Eddie Murphy
Phil Hartman
Chris Farley
Will Ferrell

Can't believe no one has mentioned Billy Crystal.

He belongs way before Ferrell.

Belushi is the clear #1 followed by Murray, Akroyd, Hartman and Chase. Crystal, Farley and Murphy would be next.

any list that puts Farley ahead of Bill Murray is retarded.

John Belushi
Eddie Murphy
Bill Murray
Phil Hartman
Chevy Chase/Will Farrell tied

Farley? Fat, drunk and stupid is funny a few times, but that's all he had

Sandler? every skit he did was whiny...Opera Man, Cajun Man, etc. although Canteen Boy skit had me rolling...not sure if it was him or Alec Baldwin that made it hilarious...

how can dan akroyd not be on anyone's top 10 list..he was pure genius on that show. chevy chase was on for only 1 season.

i think you have to put akroyd, murray, and belushi on anyone's top 10, those 3 have never been matched.
murphy should be on there, what is amazing is that he was only 18 at the time. hartman was greatness, but he was limited, same goes for hammond, they were funny, just not great. farley was great, gilda radner was a true genius and a master at improv.

the show pretty much sucks now...i was at 2nd city in chicago a few months ago..they should start recruiting from there again, thye were very funny...snl is not.

My list would have to include Will Ferrell. I'm too young to consider some of the old cast members.

Mike Myer.

Dieter
Wayne Campbell
Linda Richamn
Austin Powers
Shrek
Lothar of the Hill People

Dana Carvey too:

Church Lady
Hanz & Franz
Garth Algar
Ross Perot
Old "In MY day" man
