Top 5 Rock bands of all time

1) Beatles
2) Rolling Stones

obviously must be the first two listed, only the order is in doubt, depending on whether band is the key word or rock music is the key.

3) Who
4) Beach Boys
5) Pink Floyd or Frank Zappa, just for a new name in the mix

1. Osmonds
2. Cowsills
3. Partridge Family
4. Josie and the Pussycats
5. tie: The Archies and The Sex Pistols

Honorable Mention: The Brady Bunch

Here's my list:

In order:

1. Buddy Holly and the Crickets
2. The Beatles
3. The Ramones
4. The Beach Boys
5. The Clash

I don't know if you can say we wouldn't have rock today without BH/Crickets, but they certainly put it on its way.

While I agree with most of those listed, this thread made me realize that after The Beatles, I couldn't list a top five without leaving someone deserving off of it.

1. Journey (w/ Steve Perry)
2. Journey (w/ Greg Rollie)
3. Journey (w/new guy)
4. Journey (with drummer singing lead)
5. Journey cover band.

Next question?

i won't say you'd be wrong, but i will say that your opinion is not widely held at all. Pet Sounds is widely considered one of the 5 best rock albums ever made. not my own opinion, but for sure the opinion of a lot of people.

one piece of evidence

maybe not the greatest list, and they certainly stretch the boundary of rock and roll (public enemy?) but still that's a list of nothing but damn good albums, even if the beatles are a bit overrepresented at the top.

Said another way, bands that don't just make a great "greatest hits" album, but that could make 3 or more of them and have delivered a near half dozen albums that you'd be happy to play from start to finish should DEFINITELY be on the list

Yeah, those lists usually use the term "rock" very loosely. I mean, Marvin Gaye? Don't get me wrong, the guy is a stud, but far from rock 'n roll.

I don't know why they always insist on inserting "rock" in there. Why not "Top 100 albums by anyone who makes music"?

I'd even make a further distinction between "rock music" and "rock & roll." Sure, rock music is based on rock and roll, but there's a big difference between the music of Chuck Berry and Slayer.

slayer would be more in the heavy metal category of the hard rock subset of rock music. perhaps even more distinction would be required.

Here is my list. To me this list shouldn't include those who are most popular, or who write the catchiest songs. Who are masters of their instruments and write music like no other, that's who I'm talking about in this list:

1. RUSH
2. Pink Floyd
3. Led Zeppelin
4. Old School Metallica
5. SRV & Double Trouble (Blues but still Rock)

Overall for the masses:
LZ
Pink Flotd
Beatles
Stones
U2

My favs:
TOOL
Floyd
LZ
Black Sabbath
Nirvana
Pearl Jam (1extra)

My list is based more on how the bands continued to try and stretch themselves throughout their career:

Led Zeppelin
Beatles
Talking Heads
Pink Floyd
Rush

I'd like to put X in here but I don't think they're quite top 5. Perhaps consideration for top 10

I can't believe nobody has even mentioned The Eagles.
For me:

1. The Beatles
2. The Rolling Stones
3. Led Zeppelin
4. The Eagles

5. Pink Floyd

(Rush, AC./DC, U2, Genesis, The Who, and Cream are right there)

oops, didn't see MaduraUTMB. Damn, that's a good list M UTMB!
