Today's press conference

It seems like this year was a storm of issues starting with the horrific defensive injury issues, add in whoever in the locker room is creating problems, and then weak coaches which perhaps contributed to lack of player development and questionable play calling
it occurs to me that it says something about the members of the team who do want to be here and who have never given up.
No one can say this team quit.
I think I am ready to give him next year . I do want to see changes.

WHO in the locker room is the trouble maker or makers?
 
He learned "sayings" from Meyer.....Unfortunatley he didn't learn game planning and play calling. Herman always says," We have to figure out ____ or____ and make sure it doesn't happen again"...YET it happens again and again week after week.

I'll bet a bundle that Urban Meyer maybe had better players he inherited at Florida and Ohio State. He "coached up" the talent at Bowling Green and Utah (Herman accomplished that at Houston). I listened to the presser and heard someone ask about "coaching up" the three top recruiting classes Herman has had. More like two, which are your Sophomores and Freshmen, some of which are starters, some of which have been hurt during the season and unable to play. There's one more game against TT and then the bowl game against whomever. There's going to be another top tier signing class in December which finishes up in February. I do feel confident that next year won't be as horrible as some say here. Even if Herman doesn't replace any coordinators. That's my take.

I’ve told you this before. TH has an extremely difficult job. His salary has nothing to do with player development and game prep. He proved his worth at Rice,ISU,OSU, and UH. He was 22-4. So, I believe most of the problem lies with his OC and offensive position coaches. And the worst injury situation at Texas since 97’. I would keep Herb Hand but who knows. Maybe he needs to go too. I believe TH had to learn the hard way to keep his nose out of the game planning and seriously upgrade his offensive coaching staff. IF he does that and he has no choice. And IF his hiring choices are good. We should be playing OU for the 2020 Championship.
 
At one point he said something like 'If you're doing ABC and it doesn't work, then you move to XYZ. If that doesn't work you might need to think about DEF'. It was at that point I thought to myself WTF.
 
I don't know why everyone assumes this team didn't quit. Sure looks like they quit to me. What part of getting dominated by Baylor leads someone to believe they didn't quit. I'm one of those rational people on personality tests. I like numbers. And numbers and eye test tell me this team absolutely quit. Does Baylor have better talent? No of course not. They have coaches and players that are demanding excellence. Just not seeing it on our side of the ball. What I saw was another 100 yd penalty game. That tells me this team isn't tuned in and ready to play. That's on both coaches and players, but mentally it tells me they aren't all in. To me that's quitting. You're either all in or your aren't. I'm on PTO this week but still worked tonight because I'm all in. Teammates know they can depend on me. Know I'll deliver if I tell them I will. Just not seeing this on this team. What I see are guys that think they're all in, but their play tells another story. You are what your results say that you are. The offense hasn't had a ton of injuries since LSU. CJ is a big loss, but damn. Last 2 first halves had 1 TD drive while the other team was in prevent. Rest was nadda, nothing, zilch. If they didn't quit, they just suck. Take your pick.

TH will have to make changes in asst. coaches. Beck will probably have fall on the sword, even though that will hurt recruiting, and TH is really the OC. I think TO stays, and Hand too, but look for Warehime and a couple others to be unemployed.
Next year (I know) the Horns will win at least 10 games. Sr. QB, improved O & D lines, and experienced, talented secondary. I think the fr rb that is coming in will be a star, along with a few other young skilled players. Good times ahead for you guys! Consistency is the key though, to keep the train rolling, and that is why Herman won’t be fired. You can’t keep going through head coaches, and be expected to have program consistencies.

I WANT to believe that it's the injuries....that, you can do nothing about....were there any injuries on the OL? That play was the biggest disappointment for me....
 
Really, we are just one answer (ok maybe two) away from greatness. All we need to do is fix/upgrade the offensive scheme so that the flow is more fluid. Examples: receivers get separation, the ball is thrown on time, unpredictable play calling with misdirection and diseption, strong sweeps with pulling tackles and guards etc. This could happen with a new OC maybe Graham Harrell or the Utah staff.
The second change is perhaps a new DC. But if TO would just tweak his scheme to use more down lineman closing running gaps and better rush to the QB
I'm thinking stunts with four lineman with occasional blitzes. Close the gaps on their wrs, we can run with them.
So really just two changes and we're there. Wins come more often, coaches look smarter, fans are happier, wives look better and the sky is more blue.
I believe we have the players and we are getting more good players. Let's not blow this. Perhaps Tom is something of a liability with his decision making. But He is a good recruiter.
 
Harrell, like Leach, hates us. I don't think he's taking any interviews in Austin any time soon. We didn't recruit him even though he set every HS passing record there was up to that point.

Who did recruit Harrell? NOBODY! He was a cancer MD Anderson wouldn’t take on.

Want to know Graham Harrelll, watch the Tech Gator Bowl against Virginia. The first half was the worst half of football in Tech history. Leach as much as said so in his halftime interview. The team bowed up, read Harrelll the riot act (something about Christmas in Anahuac) and Tech destroyed UVA in the second half.

Has he matured? Hopefully, but we have enough locker room problems without adding another huge one. Shame because he does know offense.
 
QB play for whatever reason ( be it Sam just isn't that good, handcuffed by scheme, being coached down...I don't know....) but..... I do know if we stay with Sam and he doesn't play balls to the wall like he did last year ...we will continue to lose to teams with a defensive pulse. Sam had too many bad throws, he was hesitant, ran passive, had poor pre-snap reads, ran the quick pitch play way too slow, and was so bad on zone read that it looked like it was a designed hand-off 99% of the time. Herman should have given Rising way more opportunities and kept him from leaving if they were going to try to make our QB a pocket passer like they did this year.

The very best thing for the program is for you to be right about a few changes (play selection for sure) making the team great. The fact is that Tom is going to get another year to improve and so all of the negativism about him and gnashing of the teeth will only hurt the team, and recruiting, and speed the demise.

The frustrations are justfied and all of the opinions are out there. And so it is time to back off and give him his head. I found a couple of things interesting in the pressor. For one, he definately has the message and is sincerely feeling the pain. No excuses. That is good. And the other is thst one of his few mentors is Fedora. I can only hope those discussions are about how to improve tge offense. Maybe, just maybe, we will see something Sat.

Have they stopped talking about Sam's (apparent) rib injury? Know it would affect his power running and (probably) passing accuracy......to a point.... coming back healthy next year, I'd expect for both to be back to 2018 levels....

That all sounds wonderful and you are on point with the defensive fixes...The only problem is Mr Mensa. It's not is he smart enough to make changes, but can his ego allow him to make changes....When he got here he said," This is our offense. We don't change. We are not a jack of all trades master of none." Changing in his mind is admitting he was wrong. ( How do I know this ? Listen to him !!! He never says we made a dumb** call there on 3rd and 2, etc, etc... Its always," the back hit the wrong hole, the OL missed a block, lack of execution, etc, etc.. ) AND THE ULTIMATE : Coaching backs to be "slow to the hole"....WTH !!!! Great backs have vision and can see cutback lanes and the alley at full speed and follow blocks. Our guys already get the ball 6 yards deep and standing still...How much freaking slower do you need to be??? All that slow to the hole does is give the LBs and SS time to get to the point of attack. The "coaching committee's" thinking is flawed, and they don't see it. You would think the defensive coaches could explain it to them...oh wait....never mind.
Last presser Tom admitted to not preparing or developing players..If he can recruit after that he IS an amazing recruiter. .I can just hear Riley, Saban, Dabo,Day, Oregon, etc, etc... In recruits living rooms now. " Son you want to go to Texas or do you want to be 'developed' into an NFL draft pick at our place ?"
If we keep Tom, he will have a huge hole, of his own making, to dig out of. I am anxious to see what changes he makes, if any.

If Sam is hurt, then Tom is a fool for not giving Thompson a chance to run the offense ...Especially after the OU crash and burn and TCU disaster.

Thompson must suck if he isn't better than what I've seen out of Sam since after the LSU game. If i were a betting man, my wager would be that Tom doesn't want to give him a chance to out shine Sam. Kind of like Mack when he let an injured Colt lose to A&M instead of playing Snead back in 2006 or so.

I agree. Tom must have this man love for Sam. One of the greatest decisions game time in a championship game was when coach Saban changed quarterbacks starting the second half enabling them to win their championship. Mensa would never make that decision. He can't think out-of-the-box like that. So he will start Sam all next season and Thompson and others won't get to play no Matter how Sam plays. He's just too much of a one-dimensional thinker. I have a friend like that. Don't think out of the box just go by the way of statistics and convention.
