Time for Arkansas

Okay I'm stealing somebody's mojo here but damned I want to start talking about Arky already.

They come to Austin with 2 close wins against subpar teams:
28-24 vs. North Illinois, oops Western Illinois
28-27 vs. Louisianna Monroe

In 2 games they have thrown the ball 75 times and run the ball 57 times. Michael Smith is only back with more than 40 yards on the ground, but he has been effective gaining 7.1 YPC with 2 TD's. Dick is spreading it around and it appears that Arky is very deep at the WR position.

Defensively they have 3 sacks on the season but no INT's. 12 TFL and 13 QBH show me that they can get pressure on the QB and into the backfield. They have given up 300 yards of offense/game so far (114 rushing, 188 passing).

Not much really jumps off the page defensively. They look to be balanced between the run and pass and don't overplay one or the other. Offensively they seem to be a pass 1st team which is in stark contrast to what kind of team they were last year.

I would expect Texas to overplay the pass on defense. This will be another good test for the young Texas secondary.

Thoughts. Opinions from those that follow Arky football?

I'm not prepared to offer analysis on the game yet, but living in a town in NE Texas virtually surrounded by Arky fans sure does get me pumped for this. We need to GATA!

I listened to the game and it sounded like Dick got sacked at least 7 times. Their Oline was going to be a strength, but it looks like a huge weakness. Lots of freshmen for them that hopefully get rattled in front of 100k people.

On a positive note, we (Arkansas) have Bobby Petrino. If Nutt can beat you twice in the state of Texas, I imagine Petrino can too.

Seriously though, Casey Dick has thrown for 640 yards in two games which leads the SEC. Michael Smith, the HB, has only played one game and had 157 on the ground and an additional 23 by reception. We can throw the ball around with innovate play calling but that is about the end of the positives.

Defensively, we are as bad as they come. We start something like 10 Freshman and Sophomores. The defense is atrocious. Period. End of story.

I believe that emotion, adrenaline and an innovative, if not high powered, offense will keep it a game for all of two quarters but the defense simply isn't there to put up a 4 qtr fight.

Texas- high 40's, low 50's
Arkansas high 20's, low 30's

(And as an additional side note, Texas is followed by #13 Bama, #5 Florida, and #9 Auburn so this will be the first loss of a 4 game skid)

Yes, I believe that the Arkansas offense can, and will, put 3 TD's on the board. Maybe 4.

But that isn't saying much. This will be a very, very high scoring game.

1)Bobby Petrino is one hell of a play caller and love him or hate him, he can coach offense. Dick, who was maybe the greatest "hander offer" and worst QB in the history of the SEC the past 3 seasons, is now throwing it around like Joe Montana. The running game is legit too. Especially considering the offensive line is led by the #1 Center in the country and Rimington Trophy winner.

2) And this is where it turns ugly for the Hogs, Texas will have to literally turn the ball over and have massive mental breakdowns to not score at will. The Arkansas D will be humiliated this season. It is just too young.

So, yes, I believe it will be in the 40 or 50 something to 20 or 30 something.

I work with two Piggy fans...interesting.

Hopefully Texas will line up and run the ball right at them and pound them with Fozzy.....wear them out and keep Casy D off the field.

Remember the 1981 game in Fayetteville:

Texas(#1) 11 Arkansas(Unranked) 42

You never know. I'm not laying any money on the Hogs.

Baylor and Rice were also ranked in the top #20 that year.

Now if UT happens to be on this weeks SI cover like 1981,
there might be an problem.

However, I don't think a win against UTEP warrants an SI cover.

This will be a stomping of epic proportions. Keep in mind that Arkansas had to come from behind AT HOME on a lucky 4th and 10 call to beat Div II Western Illinois (picked to finish 4th in the Gateway Conference). Then followed that up with having to come from behind to beat UL Monroe.
I can't belive a Hog fan would come on here and think that Petrino's magic play calling is going to light us up for 30 points, if he couldn't do it at home against Div II competition it won't happen in Austin.

I think that Bobby Pee is in way over his head against Texas. After the Texas game, he'll probably have start having second thoughts about leaving Atlanta.

I don't think it will be a complete mudhole, but it doesn't have to be for us to add momentum to a good start on the season.

To me, this game can really help the psyche of our young secondary or cause it to start questioning. Everyone is very focused on their performance and there are enough really young guys to be listening enough to affect their play in the important games against Colorado and OU.

If we get improved play against the pass down the middle of the field (looks like the opportunity will certainly be there) and win comfortably it will add momentum to our season.

I'd love for folks to be talking about an off game in another area (if there has to be one at all) other than the secondary.

I think this is a perfect type game for us. Old rival, at our new "cathedral" (great line from FAU coach) of a stadium, great offensive mind against an area of our team that needs improvement.

In 03 Texas lost 3 fumbles and lost the TOP by 10 minutes. Only rushed for 62 yards.

I don't think any of those 3 things happen this Saturday.

I agree that 30 points seems unlikely. UT will be pumped up in new stadium and new DC doesn't seem like he will let 30 points hit the scoreboard anytime soon.

I watched most of their game Saturday and that running back looked pretty good but other than that......meh.

They will not score more that 20 points against Texas.

Texas 49 Arkansas 20

Not sandbagging at all. Your wrs will have a field day with our dbs. We are just not talented enough, too young, and too early in a new system.

I am betting on Texas so I will at least get some enjoyment out of the game.

The wildcard in all this could be ..the weather.

If Hurricane Ike (Bastard ruined my vacation next month to Turks).. goes as projected.. it could hit the Texas coast at 2 a.m. Saturday morning... which then would result in big rain in Austin all day Saturday.

Could be messy, wet, windy, ugly game conditions.

There is only a 20% chance of rain. Weather isn't going to be an issue.
OU Sucketh: As I stated in my previous two posts, the Arkansas defense is about as intimidating as a school bus full of 3rd grade girls. It is our defense that allowed close games with far, far inferior competition.

But do not be fooled. Arkansas went from 10 years of pounding it on the ground with deflated footballs to a new coaching staff with an entirely new scheme. You are only being intellectually dishonest if you think installing a brand new scheme, in the first two games of the year, and ending up leading the SEC in offense and passing does not speak volumes
about the coaching and young talent.

Point being, IMHO, Arkansas will score Saturday and I anticipate them to do so multiple times (3 maybe 4 TD's). The talent and play calling is there.

But get your panties out of a wad because UT will double the Hogs on the board. When you start 10 Freshman and Sophomores, it can and will be ugly. If Colt doesn't throw for 300 (+) yards, he should transfer.

I would put the over/under on this one at 76.5

The MVP for you Longhorns will be #71, but he'll be wearing a red helmet with a hog on it.

UT 66
UA 31

We should dominate all aspects of this game.

I also find it amusing that they almost lose to two crappy teams, yet they have a "legit" running game and a QB like Joe Montana. Or did you mean Joe Montania?
