What's with all the 3 star recruits in the 2014 class?

Coaches found all the high upside guys -OR-

Have just given up on the top people?

Would be interested in opinions.

With adequate coaching it should be good enough to get back to the Alamo Bowl every year.

Ah, the Alamo Bowl. Our home away from home. Like taking a trip to another country, yet never having to leave the farm.

Viva Valero! Sounds good to me.

I think the new evaluation system is focused on guys who can help us sooner rather than later. The high-energy types who can provide a spark with speed, rather than the primadonna 5-star guys we've taken who haven't panned out.

Third Coast My want to brush up on new bowl tie ins. Yes the Alamo would be a pretty good thing.

I agree with you Vol. I think they're in the process of heading toward a "if we can't coach them..." path that will ultimately lead to either BCS appearances and big wins, or the 8-4 quagmire zone where they will prove that they can't coach kids up. I'd say the odds are in favor of the latter right now.

With a few fixes, particularly to the OL, QB play, and consistency on D, it could be the former. But those are huge fixes based on what I've seen from this squad.

These guys are currently 3 stars according to some services. Remember this is before their senior seasons. I expect many will end up with more stars after being seen by more of these recruiting services since they are now of interest to a major program.

One of the best years for DB prospects in the state - 6 of the top 10 players and 14 of the top 50 are DBs - and Texas may whiff on them all. My how the mighty have fallen at what used to be DBU.

Top Texas DBs going elsewhere

If it's not about playing with the big boys in the SEC, it's about wearing them fancy duck uniforms at Oregon. How the hell is a former national power like Texas supposed to compete?

In August, we'll have 8 scholarship DBs on the roster who are freshmen/sophomores. I think that has a lot more to do with why we're not pulling in a truckload of them this year. If you remember, we had that lull after the awesome sauce group of Brown/Griffin/Griffin/Ross/Huff. I have a feeling that we're either finishing up the current "lull" or we're going to have one more year of it. I don't think we're freaked out by missing 5-star DBs.

Winning will cure whatever other 5-star misses we're so concerned about. If we win the games we're supposed to and actually stay competitive against the likes of OU, I think more highly-ranked kids will consider us a viable option.

Catholic.... don't feel any need to respond to Hippie.... he is a jerk.

My concern is that we are may not be getting the best guys. Am interested in insight into the potential of the 3 stars we are recruiting. Because as you may know, on average, 4 and 5 star guys are better than three star guys. The 3 star who does well is still an exception (you idiots who like to focus on the exception are just that, idiots.)

Oh, and by the way, OU has generally finished behind us in recruiting, but they sure do a bit better when the game is played

Hippie does not seem to understand that recruiting does not finish in June or July. It does not even finish in February. Stoop seems to understand better than Mack that you must COACH UP the guys you recruit.

The answer does seem fairly obvious. We're getting the guys interested in going to Texas. These days that is not many 4s and zero 5s. Regardless of perceived talent, spin, hopes and dreams, recruiting has gone downhill.

We have never seen Mack win games with a majority of 3 stars. So now is the time to be bringing up this issue, IMO.

Horn, I'm not worried that we're missing on 5-star DB's, I'm worried that we have about 10 4&5 star DB's in state and we have to go out of state to get a 3-star recruit to fill the one spot we wanted. If we get lucky enough to pick up one of the six or so remaining 4-star DB's on the board we will have wasted a spot on the out of state recruit. Seems like bad decision making to me. If we don't need them then why not wait for a good one?

Mack's philosophy has shifted on this over the years, and it's mostly because of the SEC. Kids are getting offers earlier and earlier, and the staff felt that we needed to start getting our favorite camp kids when the picking was ripe.

So then the Rivals or Scout rankings come out, three years after a kid started camping in June in Austin every year as a 7th grader, and he's only a 3-star for whatever reason. Size, speed, plays for a small school, etc. Regardless, he's still "our guy." We don't necessarily need to spend the money to deadbeats like Will Lyles for recruiting services on future 5-star guys because we already have some in mind.

I don't see taking a 3-star guy early over a 5-star guy late as a defeat for the program. I think it's more of an opportunity to the kid and coaches to show us why he belongs. Colt made the best of it. Gideon earned a 4-year starting job because of it. The 5-star guys we missed on might do well and they might not, just like any other kid, but if someone wants to win at Texas and shows the skills they possess, it really doesn't matter how many stars they got.

2010 is a decent example of why stars don't translate. Of the 21 four-or-five-star guys that we took in that class, truly only 9 of them have panned out as "contributors" on the current team, with maybe only 2 of them as badasses who could be all-conference.

If Akina thinks a DB can play what is the issue?

Recruiting is a crap shoot - as many 4 and 5 stars don't pan out as 3 stars who do.

We have taken a whole bunch of three star guys early. Someone please tell me about these particular guys, What makes them so good that UT makes such early offers?

As much as I want to be a glass 3/4 full guy, I also like facts. I know recruiting is a a gamble to an extent (but, even so, I'll bet more if I am holding three Kings than three 5's, Even if my glasses are burnt orange) In past years Mack liked to go more for 4 and 5 star guys. Please explain the change in philosophy in a glass half full manner.

It seems to me that the common thread in this thread (pun intended) is the question of our coaches' talent evaluation ability. We would all be fine with the current mix (and seemingly low Rivals avg star rating) if there were historical evidence that we have taken a similar class that had panned out. The opposite is certainly true - reference the 2009 class that was at the root of the talent shortage we saw in 2010 and 11 teams.
Maybe a research project and analysis for someone with more time than I? I would look at groups of 2 classes and analyze the 3 stars career successes vs 4 and 5 * . Let's see how many McCoys and Brian Robson there are per capita.

Really Old Speak (1998-2003):

Yeah boy, look at all the 4 and 5 star players we’re getting in. Give them a year or two with Mad Dog, let them get coached up by our staff, and look out!!! No way OU or anyone else can keep up. I can’t believe the amount of talent that’s coming to Austin. This may be the best class in not only UT history, but college football, and I have the spreadsheet to prove it.

CAN YOU SMELL WHAT MACK IS COOKIING!!!!???!!!

Old Speak (2004-2010)

Look at all this talent coming in. Even if we don’t have the best coaches around, we’ll just overcome that with ability. No way those 3 star players at OU or ATM can keep up with us, much less those 2 star chumps from K-State.

CAN YOU SMELL WHAT MACK IS COOKIING!!!!???!!!

New Speak (2011-Present)

Who needs all those 4 and 5 star guys? Bunch of whinny prima-donnas who don’t pan out anyway. Give me a good 3 start player who’s hungry and wants to be here – look at Colt. I’m so fired up about this class.

CAN YOU SMELL WHAT MACK IS COOKIING!!!!???!!!

I have nver won a national title myself, but I have some experience with football. To me this looks like a good class. Obviously we will not know for sure until 3, 4, or even 5 years from now, but I'd be willing to bet on this class producing good results. Granted, I do not see a player in this group I would want on the field anytime soon, and, yes, they'll need good coaching (skills and conditioning) to become great college players. In 2 years, at least 2-3 of these kids will begin making contributions on defense, special teams, and probably at WR. In 3 years, kids from this class will be starting at several positions. We have enough talent in uniform now and committed for the future to win many games. All it takes is smart coaching, smart football, toughness, and effort.

There is just no way to objectively consider this a positive sign. You can argue the merits of 3* v. 5* all day long but there is no overlooking the fact that we are totally whiffing on the best and deepest group of DBs in years.
