The Santorums Scare Me

I am always scared whenever I read that somebody believes they are doing God's will. Such ideas usually do not end well:

"It's completely a spiritual thing. This is God's will...A mission to make the culture a better culture, more pleasing to God."

— Karen Santorum on her husband pursuing the presidency

Part of me likes Rick's frankness but the rest of me is really freaked out by his viewpoints.

I appreciate that he's putting it all out there and giving voters a chance to decide. I won't be voting for him but he's less of a chameleon than the others.

i guess you feel better knowing the current potus has a racist minister who thinks we got what we deserved on 9/11, and america be damned? yeah. that is so much more sane, and comforting. Go ahead and list the last "god" legislation that was proposed and passed in the last 40 years that has impacted your life. Here's a hint...it isn't happening, and is a complete nonissue. people who make up feaux boogeyman issues like this when we have 15 trillion in debt shoud just leave.

First off, AWK, as my posting history indicates, I'm not a fan of Obama, so I don't get your "ruh roh" in response to my quote.

Second, praying that you be an instrument of God's will is different from proclaiming that what you are doing IS God's will.

You know, I don't even understand her point. Isn't God omnipotent? And, therefore, isn't everything a reflection of his will ---- even what Obama is doing, even what the Iranians are doing?

We are all instruments of God's will, all day, every day. What other will would we be instruments of?

All I am doing is making a historical observation that whenever people start believing that what they are doing has God's blessing, a whole lot of other people usually end up dying.

The Obamas scare me, so we're even. I'm much more comfortable with someone trying to do God's will than with someone who thinks they're a god.

"This is the moment when the Earth began to heal." Oh yeah, heal the Earth Dear Leader.

I would think anyone that is concerned with separation of Church and State would have real concerns about the likely Democratic nominee.

Barack Obama has a lot of good qualities but unfortunately most of them are overwhelmed by his unwavering worship of labor unions.

As was pointed out above, name the last time any of your liberties were threatened with "God" legislation - or even the proposal of - in the last forty years.

Obama takes away liberties of all kinds as fast he can.

Good grief.

BI- I think you are stepping in it on this one. If you can find a single post that you have ever made regarding your wariness of Obama as a result of his religious beliefs then you might possibly have a position to question Santorum on this.

Plus, it is a quote attributed to his wife, not him, and we don't know the context.

But really, you are splitting hairs between the BO quote and the Mrs Santorum quote. It is just semantics. If BO does as he claims (part of the reason this hasnt come up before with BO is that no one really believes him regarding his spiritualness- I really dont know or care) and really hears god's will and tries to allign himself with that will, then it is the EXACT same thing as the quote Mrs Santorum made. They just worded it differently. I am not interested in parsing their meanings because their meanings are the same.

Just to underscore BI's point of the thread, there are a LOT of Americans who feel justifiably scared when a major party candidate and his wife proclaim that they want to create "a culture more pleasing to God."

That's identical to the way the Taliban rules, btw.... passing laws and restricting the freedoms of others based on what their version of God "wants." The religious right in America lacks the self-awareness to recognize the parallels.

Horn89, that is Effing hilarious considering Obama's recent actions regarding contraception and the Catholic Church.

You may wonder and worry if Rick Santorum is going to respect the separation of Church and State but you already know with certainty that Barack Obama does not.
