While I agree, my thought has aways been that's because a multitude of players/recruits had no money to take a girl on a date or go to the local hotspots. I can see a great opportunity for that to change with NIL $$ for all. More money available, more desire for places to party.

The days of Earl arriving with a couple of pairs of jeans, a few t-shirts, boots & tennis shoes are likely gone forever. On the bright side, Bosworth wouldn't have to suffer the indignity of driving that damn Corvette around Norman while his Jag convertible was parked in the garage with the keys in Barry's desk drawer.

80's Jags were atrocious! 80's Vettes were just middling bad. Dickerson's gold T/A was prolly the best of the lot. Always found it funny that SMU picked up the payments on it when E.D. signed with them.

Don't know who told you that about the payments, but is not true. Myer even threatened to turn the Aggies in if they were late on a payment. That info comes from someone very familiar with the loan and the group of Aggies making those payments.

Steve Endicott, who was an SMU assistant at the time, said in the documentary that Texas A&M "made the down payment on the car, and we helped him with it after he got to SMU."

Then Endicott is a liar. Not one payment on that car EVER came from anyone except an Aggie. Payments were always by money order and delivered to the bank by one of 4 or 5 Aggies. Did SMU give the Aggies money for the money order? I can't prove they didn't, but after the animosity created by Myer, I am certain there was no communication between the two groups.

I have no communication with Disney's great whitewash machine. Anyone that believes anything those bozos put out, gets what they deserve, which is anything but the truth - see also Marcos Dupree. (I would love to have been in the room when ESPN had all that money invested only to learn the truth and realize they could never air that.)

I'm not having any trouble picturing it.

Endicott does have another side note in college football history. On September 26, 1970, coached by Dee Andros, he quarterbacked Oregon State to a stunning 23-14 win in Norman as a 13-point underdog. OU's next game, after an open date, was a 41-9 beat down at the Cotton Bowl when they ran the Wishbone for the first time. Taking Jack Mildren out of the pro-set and putting him into triple option, likely would have never happened without Endicott's performance on Owen Field two weeks earlier.

Yeah, I also want to hear the full story on Dupree. I’ve heard bits and pieces, and rumors, like, while on an official campus visit, he stole some boots from the Co-op and a UT athletics guy showing him around had to pay for the boots so Dupree didn’t get arrested. Don’t know if that’s what really happened or what else is out there.

He took a walloping hit in the Cotton Bowl. Staggered him.

Marcus Dupree NEVER stole anything from the COOP. I'm not sure the COOP sold boots back then. He was taken to Sheplers to look at boots. His family had given him money in case he found something he wanted to buy. Fred would not let him pay for the boots until he got permission from his mother. He wore the boots out of Sheplers, and when the department was contacted by the store manager about payment, a supporter paid for them with his AmEx.

I thought that story was well documented and pretty well known.

Richard Peavy's hit was a monster blast that broke both their helmets. The hit was on our sideline. Richard jumped up and ran into our team looking for a helmet. Marcus got up and trotted across to the east sideline with Barry going crazy. Barry charged out onto the field trying to get Marcus to go back to the huddle, but before he got about half way to the hashmark, he ran out of cord for his headset and got a serious case of whiplash. FWIW, I tried to buy Richard's helmet with a letter of authenticity, but Deloss said it was likely in a trash can in Fair Park. That was Marcus Dupree's last college play.

Marcus Dupree was a piece of work. He eventually committed and went to OU. Then transferred to a different school but was pissed that the rules back then required him to sit out a year. He may have tried to go to the NFL, but I’m not sure. He did go to the USFL and severely blew out a knee. IIRC that injury pretty much ended his career. Today, I have no clue nor do I care what that self proclaimed prima donna is doing.

As far as the boots story is concerned. He wanted a pair of boots, and got a pair, but I don’t recall that he stole them. Some BMD or the school may have paid for them but they weren’t stollen. Recruiting infraction? Maybe. But there was no theft.

I would dispute it was a "BMD", but the fact that they were not stolen is accurate.
