The Chickens Have Come Home to Roost

Namewithheld -- Really?

I hope it's lack of imagination and not lack of intelligence that leads to these bizarre imaginings of what's going on in Satchel's head.

I know a lot of these ideas about armed citizens patrolign the community make a lot of sense -- say if you are writing episodes of the Rifleman or Bonanza -- but do you really think it good public policy to allow common citizens to execute any criminals they catch in the act

I read each post. The point of my response is that stricter gun laws do not result in lower murder rates. Our crime issues are the result of not holding people accountable. Our politicians react by enacting laws which only law abiding citizens follow - why else do I have to stand in line twice a month to buy Claritan for two different family members with allergies?

The gun crimes in Chicago or Mexico are not about guns, but about people choosing to make a living selling drugs. The NRA is not responsible for the chickens in your original post, the thugs are. If not the sellers, at least blame drug abusers and not the NRA.

It comes down to how much you value human life. I guess my feelings are more aligned with the values in Western Europe, Canada, Japan and China where capital punishment and fatal violence in domestic disputes or property crimes seems horrific beyond imagining as opposed to Mexico and the US where it's just part of the landscape.

I believe the long-term answer is in changing values -- not gunning down the "bad guys". I thiink state-sponsored violence, in the form of capital punishment, and state sanctioned-violence as in the case of Joe Horn aren't sending the right message about how much we value a human life.

I think looking at the Wiki article on Joe Horn and deciding how you feel -- great or sick at your stomach -- may be a way to decide where you fall on this issue. The Link

You made some really good points. I just want to correct one thing . You listed China among other nations and regions that do not have capital punishment.
China executes more people than all the other nations combined.

Personal story relating to the topic
Last week 2 young black men came to my door. both poorly dressed and none too clean. I did not open the door and really couldn't hear them as my dog was braking and jumping at the door so I waved them off. One of them came at the door and pounded on it then they left.
Later the police sent out an alert that 2 young black men were going around neighborhoods " selling magazines" and at one house where a woman was in her yard they wouldn't leave so the wife called her husband who was on his way home. as he got there one of the black men pulled a knife and stabbed at the husband. But then they ran.
If I had known about this incident I would have gone to the door with my shotgun.
and yes I would have used it.

Horn, I think you used good sense and had a happy outcome. Had they pushed through the door and you shot them down I'd have no problem with it. If you opened the door and shot them as they ran away -- problem.

Thanks for the correction. Also, Mexico, I believe, does not have capital punishment. I still think capital punishment sends the wrong message.

Also, I really don't understand why cultures like in say China currently, or historically Germany and Japan, where there is strong community cohesion much kindness and little violence on the individual level, they are capable of horrific atrocities when working for the collective.

If they run, I will pop them in the leg, or that will be my attempt.

The criminal running is betting that I won't fire, he will be betting wrong! When you break into my house that is the bet you are making.

Satch would have you believe that the thug that is breaking and entering is the most innocent person in the world and needs some compasion, when what they need is to be taken out of society.

I'm guessing that, like me, Satchel is somewhere between those two extremes. I've known people who comitted felonies under influence of others that before and after the crime weren't what you would call bad guys.

I'm not sure a conversation with Satchel is worth the keystrokes. Matter of fact I believe he is probably conservative who is having some fun.

When you can't seriously engage the topic, you get personal, because if gives your kind the much needed supremacy boost that makes your lives worth living. Knowing that I annoy the hell out of you gives my work here meaning.

As a newbie pistol owner, I'm gonna go to the NRA shooting range next week and empty a few boxes in honor of Satchel.

And one more thought, Satchel must dislike guys like Colt McCoy and Jordan Shipley for having, shooting and hunting with guns.

Genuine question for Satchel. Remember a few months ago the news story about the young woman, with a young baby who was recently widowed. She was home alone at night and heard commotion at her door and realized someone was trying to break in.

She was obviously terrified, and scared not only for herself, but for her infant. She retrieved her shotgun (I believe it was a shotgun) called 911, and asked what she should do. The operator couldn't come out and say, "Kill the guy" but did say, do what you need to protect your baby.

If I remember correctly this happened in a small town in Oklahoma. Now, this case really got to me as I imagined this young mother, alone with her child, and what ended up being 2 armed men coming to get her. This is the best example, for me at least, for why we are allowed to own guns and protect ourselves if needed.

I am curious---what would you have done in this situation? If this young woman was your daughter...would you have wanted her armed and ready to protect herself and her baby?

I know this is an extreme case, but you never know when you are the "extreme case".

As I have written in the past, in an ideal world ours would be culture that would wholly support gun ownership that was defensive in nature. Specifically, guns to protect life and property should be viewed as perfectly acceptable. This ideal culture would not permit guns to be used in an offensive manner away from the home.

Sadly, it's too late for that because we've decided we want the gun to be ubiquitous

The problem with creating the ideal culture is not too many criminals really care for the governments view on gun control.

Have you ever looked at the statistics on violent gun crime? Setting your sights on the concealed carry laws is missing the point entirely. If you cancel all laws allowing gun access outside the home, you will barely make a dent in the drivers of gun-related violence.
