Texas vs WVU official game thread

Wow, Herman’s comments after game were same as I posted but couldn’t get sent while at game. That being that Sam was way off in first half. Only difference was I said Thompson should get a series to see how he did. He (Sam) was not on in the second half but the drops on the good throws he made were certainly not his fault. Unbelievable run defense boys, simply outstanding.

WVU really needed to kick field goal on first fourth down try in the fourth quarter, over six minutes to play, your defense is playing lights out, you are getting ball back, better to just need field goal to win. Their coach panicked when he should have trusted what had been working all day.

It was a good game because Texas won. It was not so good because we under permed again.
I hate when we under perm

I said before the season even started that Thompson should get at least one or two drives in every game. Of course I still feel that way.

In the last 25 years or so, how many game altering calls have we gotten that anyone can remember? Very, very few.

Does anyone else find it odd that over the past two weeks we were the beneficiaries of two likely game altering calls. Just a coincidence? Perhaps...

Sam didn't have the best of days but it was good enough for the W; 15 of 31, 184 yards, 5.9 ave., 2 TDs. He ran the ball 13 times for 39 yards, 3.3 ave.

Texas winning is always a good thing. :hookem:

I watch recruiting and this class and the next have already been completely gutted. Which I translate into a bleak future. If I am correct, then winning now might actually cost us big later. Still worth it?

Four years in do we have a consistent team?
Are we developing players and sending them to the NFL in a manner that matches the quality of our recruiting classes?
Do we see a clear direction of where this program is going?
A system?
A plan for sustainable success?
Is this an elite team?

No, no, no, no, no and no

I noticed we have more recruits decommitting from the 2021 class. I saw that we've lost 7 guys as decommits; 5 from the 2021 and 2 from 2022 one of which was a five star and the top QB in the nation. Not sure what exactly is happening, but but it doesn't take a genius to figure out that a QB will be running for his life most of the time in our offense.

One of the reasons that the Texas offense underperformed is that WVa has a very good defense - give credit where it's due. And the same goes for Texas - the defense played very well today - not perfect, but good enough to win against a good team.

As I and others have observed previously, it is likely that recruits and their parents sense a problem in Austin. They should, because there is a problem. This type of attrition seems unprecedented.

It almost seems Sam is a little beat up.
He was not throwing well the first half at all.
Seemed much better in the second but receivers couldn't hold on to the ball.
I wouldn't have minded seeing Thompson in for a series.

Just learned this stat from post game : WV had 43 yards rushing today! Game ball to the D.

Agree. Our DLine has definitely come around

Yet we still have a well-defined pattern of surrendering on third-and long which has been happening for all 4 years of Herman no matter the DC. It's maddening. Giving up 3rd/10 or more will happen to any defense 10% or 20% of the time. With us, it feels more like 75%.

This. While I am sure the reason is blitzing one cover, and the offense not holding back a back to block which by definition creates an open area 5-10 yards beyond the LOS. If an LB/DB moves to cover the hole that opens up downfield. Then there is the whiffed tackle attempt.

And if its 4th and game, we bring the house. 100% of time

It's weird, but I caught the end of USC's improbable comeback win. At end, it was ASU 4th-and-10 for the game and I called "Orlando 0-blitz." Which he did, of course. LOL. But it worked.

And, as we know other teams have turned it around and performed this season and others will be looking for coaches SOON. First week in November and Coach Boom and maybe Harbaugh are gone. If Michigan takes a beating from osu. he may just quit and work in the booth for a while. Don't look now but Penn State is 0-3 with 5 games remaining, Rutgers and Nebraska look like the remaining wins with likely 2 of 3 loses of the decent teams left. losing seasons don't sit well w anyone.

While this has been an aggravating fault for what seems like forever, these are our third and fourth down stats for the last two weeks:

OSU 3rd down 3 0f 12 4th down 0 of 1
WVU 3rd down 6 0f 16 4th down 0 of 3

While this doesn't address the 3rd and long issue, it does show that our D is getting itself off the field a lot better than we have in a long time.

While I'm at it, can I also complain about soft coverage packages?

It's my understanding that as long as it's not political, insulting or profane, we have freedom of speech here! :smile1:
I've stated many times that I understand very little about the technical side of football. I never played the game. However, when we commit to stop the run like we have the last two games, don't we also limit ourselves to soft coverage? Honest question.
Thank you again for all you do here, Joe.

the whiffed tackle attempt.

This bugs the **** out of me.
Bad angles and overrunning the play.
The D has really been coming around but the safeties and DBs seem to have no concept of breaking down and making a tackle.
Just bodies flying around and whiffed arm tackles.
Other than that, great game! :)
