Texas vs TCU 01/10/2024

Let me circle back now that my frustration level has subsided a bit.
Shaylee... Yes her turnovers and decision making frustrates me at times, but let me be clear that if we did not have her we would be in big trouble! She played great defense last night on Connor. I noticed that the entire game. In fact, she plays with 150% effort at all times just like Shay. I don't want to seem that I don't like her, or don't appreciate her... because that's not true.
I don't expect her to be some ball handling wiz, although I do feel her ball handling is quite better this year than last year. I would just like to see her think a little bit more. We've still got a primary ball handler in Booker. We just need somebody to step up and help her when she needs it. Shaylee is experienced, has a good skill set, and she can do better in taking care of the ball and cutting out some of the ill-advised decisions. I understand that there may be some fatigue involved with all the minutes she's been asked to play. Again... she is VERY valuable to our team.

He pushes her harder than anybody else on the team except Rori. That tells me he expects more out of her, because he believes she has more to give, and another level or two to her game.
Gaston and Holle are the only players who have been with Vic at Texas going on 4 seasons; both are seniors; both know what Vic expects out of them. Now, they also have step up their leadership roles with Rori on the bench and set the standards for the younger players.

I guess I saw Gaston's play early on last night different than other posters. So, I just re-watched. Gaston entered the game with 1 minute left in the first quarter to replace Jones after Taylor got a foul. She started the second quarter with Moore in the frontcourt. In the first minute, she failed to box out twice to get a rebound on the defensive end. Then, while under the basket, she didn't even provide any help defense as the TCU player Emma-Nnopu dribbled past Moore and drove to the basket for a layup. In the second minute, she trotted back down the court after a Moore turnover. Emma-Nnopu got an uncontested rebound for the easy putback as neither Moore nor Gaston were anywhere near the basket. With about 7:30 minutes left Faye came in for Gaston to play alongside Moore in the front court. So, in 3:30 minutes of play, Gaston had zero points and zero rebounds and just wasn't showing enough energy on the defensive end, IMO.
Thanks for re-watching and assessing DeYona's play for us! Illuminating. :e-hookem2:

I definitely noticed Gaston's lack of energy, and the mistakes that you were mentioning... In particularly the defensive ones due to lack of effort. She seems to have no confidence and no passion. She is, as we saw last year, a very talented player who can add a lot to our team. Unfortunately, also as we saw last year, she has spurts where the needed effort is just not there.
I don't know if I'd go that far. We played in Lubbock like 9 days ago and Gaston brought it to the tune of 17 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 blocks in 30 minutes.

Three days later at WVU she scores zero points with 5 rebounds in 10 minutes.

Against TCU last night, she scores 2 points with rebound in 1 minutes. Faye had 6 points and 5 rebounds in 9 minutes. IMO, rebounding is about effort.

These last 3 games were examples of what I stated previously that Gaston is either very hot or very cold; not a lot in between. I do think it's mental. If she starts the game and doesn't make a positive play and sometimes makes a negative play, she has a difficult time shaking it off and moving on to the next play as if the previous one never occurred. She gets in her head sometimes it seems.

Good analysis, Mooooo. Agree that a lot of her inconsistent play is mental.

That stat line was meant to read: Against TCU last night, she scores 2 points with 1 rebound in 10 minutes.

She definitely seems easily discouraged. That's mental for sure.

They just had a bad game, energy wise. They looked tired and seemed to be struggling to play with focus after travel and away games. We'll take the win.

Annoyed that Hadi and Deyona regularly miss put-backs. Taylor and Amo are much more consistent under the basket - or it seems that way to me. I know that they are jumping and jostling and it isn't as easy as it looks to grab the ball, go up and score. But that's why they spend time in the weight room.

...Also, I love Madison, but I worry that Vic's constant praise of her in these media sessions can be dispiriting to others. Sometimes it seems like no one else is worthy of public praise from the coach. We'd be in deep doodoo without her, but others are highly skilled athletes who might want to get back to a hot shower rather than sit and listen to Coach praise Madison. Must be like being Tom Brady's teammate.

When a player commits 8(!) turnovers in a game, Vic has her sitting on the bench for a while. But he left her in almost the entire game, which means he needs her badly, TOs and all.

Booker: 40 minutes
Holle: 40 minutes
Gonzalez: 38:14 minutes
