Texas vs TCU 01/10/2024

Amo has looked good and been productive recently. I'm not sure why Vic is not playing her more. I don't like it... especially when you're struggling to score and the two starting post players lack offensive skills to make bunnies .

Considering how other conference games turned out tonight, I have nothing to complain about. An ugly win is still a win. Madi Booker is such a blessing for this team! :hookem:

please stop running plays where Faye receives the ball with her back to the basket. Its just a turnover. She should be in for defense, rebounds, and put backs only. This team is good but gets really one dimensional when they are trying to force the ball in constantly.

ESPECIALLY when we are forcing it inside to the wrong people. I don't like the combo of Faye and Muhammad in the game at the same time. That's two deficiencies offensively taking the most high percentage shots. When the offense works for and gets those shots, they need to be taken by someone who can finish them.... Jones, Moore, Gaston.

I agree that Amo needs more minutes. She usually makes good things happen. I agree that we need more offensive moves than to automatically force it inside. So predictable and leads to a lot of turnovers (like Shaylee's tonight).

Just don't understand why Gisella Maul get no minutes. Even when everyone is shooting so badly...sigh
That’s a question I would like answered as well. I wonder why Jordana is not getting more minutes as well. I can see Jack transferring. She just don’t doing it for me. In year two, she still appears to be slow on defense, weak at posting up and just look out of sorts when she’s on the court. I’m worried about her lack development.

Shaylee had entirely too many turnovers tonight. Jordana and Maul could have gotten some of her minutes.

Thankful for the win. A lot to work on before KSU on Saturday.

What kind of defense are we playing? It's not zone right? I don't get how we were letting some of their guards have wide open 3-point shots. Perhaps I'm not paying attention to them setting good screens or something. On one play, Madi was in the paint guarding absolutely no one when the player she was supposed to be guarding was way on the perimeter taking a wide open shot.

Taylor Jones missing so many shots near the basket was odd to see based on the shooting season she's had so far. I think most of her misses were while being guarded by one undersized defender. Glad she made her shots in the final quarter.

1. After the 4th turnover from Shaylee due to a bad pass, I was mad and making it known. My wife had to shush me.

2. AMo's ball handling was suspect. When given the ball, it immediately popped out of her hands and she had to scramble to retrieve it

3. Twice the TCU coach seemed baffled why one of his players was having to leave the game after getting their 5th foul. Seems someone on the bench isn't keeping him in the loop?

4. Other than 3-pointers, seemed that we were playing a mirror image of our team. Vic was impressed and spent a bit longer than usual in the handshake line complimenting their coach.

5. I looked him up. He's only been a head coach twice. 2 years at Sacramento St. He got them into the playoffs last year and got them into the Elite Eight. Oh, that why he was snatched up by TCU

6. His second and last year at Sac State they were #4 in 3-pt percentage and #11 in number of 3-pt attempts. He loves him some 3's.

Trying to figure out what's going on with Gaston. She was sensational against Tech. But, not good at all against WVU and TCU. It's like she's either very hot or very cold. None of those 3 teams had much of a post presence. I know she's coming back from injury, but I think it's more mental with her. She's typically bigger, stronger, and quicker than the opponent who is guarding her; but, the last 2 games she's not been able to contribute much other than spell the starter a bit; zero points at WVU and 2 points against TCU is surprising to me.

Someone asked if Jak was in the doghouse.

All I know is the one possession she played, she was the last Texas player back on defense, trailing the action. From the TV view, it appeared that may have been why she was immediately pulled.

I reserve the right to change my mind after rewatching.

Gaston is on the shortest of leashes. One mistake and she’s yanked. Last night she fouled and Vic immediately grabbed Faye. Gaston saw it happening and just rolled her eyes. She’s not allowed to make a single mistake before she’s yanked while other players can turn it over 7 times and never sit down. If she weren’t a senior I could definitely see her hitting the portal. And - I’m a fan of hers and cheer loudly every time she enters the game. She and Vic don’t seem to click.

Gaston's confidence is being ruined... Amo's probably isn't the highest right now either. This is Gaston's third full season playing. She has a redshirt year AND a COVID year remaining. KSU's Ayoka Lee. Is in the same situation. So both Gaston and Amo have two years of eligibility remaining.

Wow, that game was incredibly hard to watch, especially reruns of Shaylee trying to force the ball inside and getting turned over. I don't know if that is on Vic or her, but it was frustrating. Overall, I am proud of the team's perseverance and a bountiful number of free throws. I hope this performance means Texas is saving all their good stuff for KState.

He seems to praise her in the PC's, but treats her like that. She should be starting over Faye and be getting more PT. I don't get it and yes Vic may be sorry at the end of the season.

Shaylee has always been a make dumb passes person. At this point in her career that's not likely to change.

They didn’t realize she had two years remaining. She’s listed as a senior.
I think she has so much potential - I’m a fan. But sadly I bet she’s gone after this year.

I thought she is/should be our second best big behind Taylor, and certainly quicker than Taylor. She was our second leading scorer last year and I remember her being money from about 10 feet out with a short jumper. I thought they had her on minutes restriction for injury, but seems we are past that now. Vic must be seeing something I am not, I would start her over Hadi any day and I like Hadi.

I thought most of the game she had been pushed just a little outside of her comfort zone. The early shots seemed a little longer and she was a little out of position. I thought they really wanted to capitalize with Jones inside to the point of Shaylee turning it over and Taylor starting out further than normal. Just my uneducated rabid fan perspective.

For sure. The offensive gameplan was definitely to feed the ball inside to the post players against an undersized TCU team. It just wasn't working whether b/c the entry passes weren't good, the post players weren't getting good position, or just weren't finishing. And, Madi wasn't driving and penetrating in order to take her midrange jumpers in the first quarter. The offense was not good in that first quarter.

Based on our offense, Taylor and Hadi are for the most part playing Center. Mainly when they get into foul trouble is when we see Gaston recently subbing in their place. Otherwise, Gaston or Moore sub in for Muhammad.

If Gaston hadn't gotten injured, she'd most likely have been the starting power forward like she as last season. Honestly, I don't think Gaston likes playing Center as she is undersized compared to Jones and Faye.

I guess I saw Gaston's play early on last night different than other posters. So, I just re-watched. Gaston entered the game with 1 minute left in the first quarter to replace Jones after Taylor got a foul. She started the second quarter with Moore in the frontcourt. In the first minute, she failed to box out twice to get a rebound on the defensive end. Then, while under the basket, she didn't even provide any help defense as the TCU player Emma-Nnopu dribbled past Moore and drove to the basket for a layup. In the second minute, she trotted back down the court after a Moore turnover. Emma-Nnopu got an uncontested rebound for the easy putback as neither Moore nor Gaston were anywhere near the basket. With about 7:30 minutes left Faye came in for Gaston to play alongside Moore in the front court. So, in 3:30 minutes of play, Gaston had zero points and zero rebounds and just wasn't showing enough energy on the defensive end, IMO.

How did you get in my brain...including the wife part? This is exactly what I saw. I will say one more thing...after the "discussion" between one ref and Vic between quarters one and two, the officiating got better. In the first quarter, the first five fouls called were by one referee and were on the centers. I don't know how TCU's center managed to make it through the game without fouling out.

I definitely noticed Gaston's lack of energy, and the mistakes that you were mentioning... In particularly the defensive ones due to lack of effort. She seems to have no confidence and no passion. She is, as we saw last year, a very talented player who can add a lot to our team. Unfortunately, also as we saw last year, she has spurts where the needed effort is just not there.
