Texas vs. Stanford Game 4

The finale of the four game series finds Texas looking to win two straight to split the series like they did in the other four game road series against Rice.

Excellent pitching and defense, as it has so many times for the Horns earned the victory yesterday for the Horns. You hope that maybe the bats can finally break out and have a big day and help out the pitching staff.

Lefty Josh Sawyer will get the start for Texas today on the mound.

He swings and loops a single to center.

Shaw up lefty and the right fielder bunts and the sac goes 3-4 and one down as Johnson moves to second.

Hinojosa bats right with a runner in scoring position.
Shaw was almost picked off on quick move by the pitcher.
C.J. flies to left for two away.

Barrera up with two down and one on.
A wild pitch moves Shaw to third.
The count runs full and he walks as he checks his swing in time.

Runners on the corners with two away for Marlow batting lefty.
Another full count and Barrera will be off.
He walks on an outside fast ball to load the bases.

Boswell from the left side with an early chance to put a crooked number on the board for Texas.
Another full count and the merry-go-round will start.
A high fast ball and the third straight walk scores a run.

Texas leads 1-0.

Cantu bats righty with the bases loaded and an opportunity for a big inning.
A 2-0 count brings out the Cardinal pitching coach, Rusty Filters and now he goes back to the
dugout.
Cantu back in the box and he walks for another run.

Texas leads 2-0.

Stell bats right handed and the bases still loaded.
Another 2-0 and out comes the coach again and that is it for Weir.

The new Stanford pitcher is left hander Logan James who already has a save in the series.

He faces Stell still batting with the bases loaded and a 2-0 count.
Stell back in and a ground ball to short takes a bad hop and goes into left and it's ruled a single as two
runs score.

Texas leads 4-0.

Gurwitz up as Texas has batted around.
He bats righty with runners at first and second and still two away.
He walks and that loads them up again on the fifth walk of the inning.

Johnson, who led off with a single, is back again with two down and the bases loaded.
He gets hit on an 0-2 pitch to score another run.

Texas leads 5-0.

Johnson is hurting at first on the pitch off his elbow.
He is ok now it seems.

Shaw bats for the second time in the inning.
He has the bases loaded and two outs.
A ground ball to short and the throw barely gets him at first on the 6-3 to finally retire the side.

What a way to start the game as multiple walks, a HBP, and two singles score five.

Texas with a nice 5-0 lead as Stanford comes up to bat.
 
Left hander Josh Sawyer has a 5-0 lead to work with as he gets the start for Texas.

Tommy Edman, the second baseman leads of for Stanford.
The switch hitter bats righty against lefty Sawyer.
A fly ball to right is caught by Shaw just in foul ground for one down.

Bo Branton, the shortstop bats from the right side with one down.
A ground ball to Marlow and he boots it for his first error of the season.

Matt Winaker bats lefty with one on and one down.
The first baseman ground to first and Barrera steps on the bag and throws to second for a
3U-6 double play to retire the side. That was a laser throw to second as catchers at first base has
helped the Horns defensively this series.

One played and Texas leads 5-0.
 
James back out for his first compete inning on the hill for the Cardinal.

Hinojosa leads off for Texas in the second.
Yet another full count as it seems every Texas batter is reaching this deep count.
Another walk and that is another lead runner.

Barrera bats with one on from the right side.
The power hitter takes a fast ball deep and into the trees in left for a two run bomb.

Texas leads 7-0.

Marlow is up and lines a single up the middle.
This is the type of offensive game I had hoped for in my opening.

Boswell up and a slow roller toward first and Boswell beats James to the bag for an infield single.

Two on and no outs for Cantu.
A ground ball to short should have been an easy double play, but the relay throw is off line and pulls Winaker off
first and it's just 6-4 force.

Runners on the corners and Stell up.
He chops to third that is called fair a 5-3 out is made as everybody thought it was foul.
Augie argues to no avail, but Cantu did go to second.

Gurwitz bats with two outs and runners at second and third.
He K's swinging on a high fast ball to end the frame.

Texas gets two more and leads 7-0 to the bottom of two.
 
Sawyer is out for his second inning on the hill for Texas.

Dunlap, the Cardinal catcher leads off from the right side.
He lines a single to right in front of Shaw for Stanford's first runner and hit of the game.

Mikey Diekroeger bats right handed and grounds to Marlow for a 4-6 force and out one.
The ball was hit too slowing for the dp.

One down and one on for Locher batting right handed.
Another line shot, this time to center is a single to put two aboard.

Austin Barr is the DH and he bats righty with two on and one down.
A shallow high pop is gathered in by Gurwitz in shallow center for two away.

Klein, playing center bats righty with two on and two gone.
A ground ball to short and Hinojosa takes to the bag for the 6U out that gets Sawyer out of the inning.

Two gone in the series finale and Texas leads 7-0.

 
The new pitcher for Stanford in the third is Tyler Thorn from Lubbock and a big righty.

Johnson leads off again for Texas.
He steps in right handed and grounds one deep into the hole and no throw is made as with his speed there
was no chance and it's an infield single.

Shaw up and he grounds sharply to second and it's a 4-6-3 double play as he hasn't reached today.

Hinojosa up with two gone.
He flies out to left to end the inning and Texas goes in order for the first time.

Bottom of three and Texas leads 7-0.
 
Sawyer returns for third for Texas on the hill.

The nine hole hitter Brodey bats lefty to lead off for the Cardinal.
He walks on four bad ones by Sawyer.

Top of the order is up in Edman from the right side.
A liner to the gap in left center and its by Johnson and a run scores on the double.

Texas leads 7-1.

Branton up with a man on second.
The righty hitter flies out to Shaw for one down.

Winaker bats with one on and one down from the lefty box.
Sawyer sends a pick off throw into center for an error and the runner goes to third.
A ground ball to second scores another run on the 4-3 put out.

Texas leads 7-2.

Two down for Dunlap and he flies out to right field to end the inning.

Stanford gets on the board and Texas leads 7-2 after three.
 
Thorn pitches the fourth for Stanford.

Barrera leads off this inning after his long homer his last at bat.
He walks on four pitches as Thorn didn't seem to want any part of Tres that at bat.

Marlow bats with one on.
He takes a breaker that bends right over for a called strike three and still looking for the backwards K emoticon Dion.

One down for Boswell and he pop one foul on the left side that is caught by the third baseman for two away.

Cantu bats righty with two gone and one on.
He K's swinging on an outside curve to end the frame.

Bottom of the fourth comes and Texas leads 7-2.
 
Sawyer out for the Stanford fourth and needs a good inning to keep the momentum in the Horn dugout.

Diekroeger leads off from the left side for the Cardinal.
He somehow hits a pitch at his feet and it goes to Cantu for a 3U first out.

Locher bats righty with one down.
A high fly to fairly deep left is caught by Johnson for two away.

Barr, the DH bats right handed with two gone.
Another ground ball to first is another 3U to retire the side.

Sawyer gets them in order and Texas leads 7-2 after four.
 
Thorn, the native Texan continues on the mound for Stanford.

Stell leads off from the right side for the Horns.
A pitch on the inside corner is taken for another called third strike for one down.
Stell didn't like the call and it was border line.

Gurwitz up in the nine hole with one away.
The right handed center fielder works the count full and lifts a high foul pop on the right side
and Winaker has it for two away.

Johnson grounds a single by the shortstop and then tries to stretch into a double and is thrown
out at second to end the frame on a 7-4 put out.

Texas still leads 7-2 halfway through the final game of the series.
 
Sawyer works the fifth and wants to become the pitcher of record and get the win.

Leading off for the Cardinal is Klein batting righty.
He grounds to second and the 4-3 is one away.

Brodey bats lefty with one down.
The nine hole hitter works the count full and K's swinging on a high fast ball for two gone.

Edman brings the top of the order again.
The switch hitting second baseman bats righty against Sawyer with two outs.
Another full count reached and a sharp ground ball goes by Boswell for a single.

Branton bats with one on and two down from the right side.
This time a ground ball to Boswell and he gloves it and the 5-3 play ends the inning.

Sawyer is in line now for the win as after five played Texas leads 7-2.
 
The Texan Thorn stays in the game as the sixth starts. The right hander has done a good job for the Cardinal after the big offensive start for the Horns.

Shaw leads off and he is the only Horn batter not to reach in the game and even went 0-2 in the first inning when Texas batted around.
He stays off base again with a foul pop out by the plate caught by the third baseman for one down.

Hinojosa up with one down.
He ground a single by the third baseman to put a runner on.

Barrera bats righty with one on and one down.
He has a two run blast that put the sixth and seventh runs on the board for Texas.
He takes a fast ball over for another called strike three as Thorn has really shut the Horns down.

Two away for Marlow with a runner at first.
A liner to right center is a single that puts runners on the corners as Hinojosa chugs to third.

Boswell up with two on and two down and the Horns could use another run or two to put this game away.
His little chopper to first won't get that done and the 3U retires the side.

Bottom of six and Texas still leads 7-2.
 
The new pitcher for Texas as Sawyer's day is done is another lefty in Travis Duke, working for the first time in the
series.

The lefty hitting first baseman Winaker, leads off for Stanford.
A ground ball goes by Barrera and into right field for a single.

Dunlap, the catcher bats righty with one on.
A ground ball deep in the hole on the left side is flagged by Hinojosa and his long throw is in time
for the 6-3 out as the Winaker goes to second.

Diekroeger bats lefty with one on and one gone.
A liner into the gap in right center and to the fence goes as a rbi triple.

Texas leads 7-3.

Locher bats with one out a man on third.
A ground ball to second is a 4-3 out as the run scores.

Texas leads 7-4.

Skip comes out and that's it for Duke.

The new pitcher is Kyle Johnston the right hander with a fast ball in the mid 90's.

He will face Austin Barr, the right handed hitting DH with two out and the bases clear.
He blows him away with one of those high velocity fast balls to retire the side on the swinging K.

Stanford plates two more to close the gap and Texas could use some more offense as they now lead
7-4 after six.
 
Thorn keeps going for Stanford in the seventh and why not as he is keeping Texas at bay.

Cantu leads off for the Horns.
He draws a walk to put a man on.

This brings out the pitching coach and he is leaving Thorn in.

Stell bats from the right side with one on.
A full count is worked and Taylor draws the walk on a pitch in the dirt.

Thorn seems to be tiring now and as Gurwitz is up to probably bunt them over after taking a strike.
He gets it down and the 5-3 sac is good to move up the runners.

This gives lead off hitter Ben Johnson, a chance to get a couple runs back for Texas.
He won't do it against Thorn as the coach is out again and that is all for him.

Pitching change.
 
Big right hander Colton Hoch, comes in for the third time in this series for Stanford.

Johnson steps in and he needs some contact to plate at least one run.
Stanford brings the infield in to try and cut off the run.
He sends a hard hit grounder by the drawn in third baseman for a rbi single as one run scores.

Texas leads 8-4.

Shaw up with runners on the corners and continues to be the only Horn not to reach.
He grounds a single through the right side to end that and another run scores.

Texas leads 9-4.

Hinojosa bat with runners on the corners and one down.
A one hopper to third goes for a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning.

Texas gets two big insurance runs and as they stretch at the Sunken Diamond, Texas leads now 9-4.
 
Jonhston will stay on for the seventh for Texas on the mound.

He faces Klein as the Cardinal lead off hitter.

He slap a liner down the right field line for a lead off double.

That brings the nine hole hitter Brodey up from the left side with one on.
He walks him to put two on and you certainly don't want that with the top of the order up now.

Edman is back up as the top of the order is back with two on.
A ground ball to first goes for a 3-1 out as the runners move up.

Branton bats with two on in scoring position and one down.
A foul pop at the plate is caught by Cantu for a big second out as the runners have to hold.

Winaker bats lefty with two on and two out.
Johnston can get out of it now unscathed and a pop up to Boswell does just that as the side is down.

Good job by the freshman to get out of that jam and keep that Texas lead at 9-4 after seven.

Barrera leads off for the Horns in the eighth.
He lines a shot right at the center fielder for one gone.

Marlow bats lefty with one away.
He can't check his swing and K's on a high fast ball for two outs.

Boswell bats lefty with two gone.
He flies out to left to end the frame.

Texas goes in order and leads 9-4 to the bottom of eight.
 
The freshman hurler Johnston, will stay for the Stanford eighth.

Alex Dunlap, the right handed hitting catcher leads, off for the Cardinal.
The count goes full and he shoots a single through the left side.

Diekroeger bats with one one from the left side.
He grounds one that was foul and then took a strange hop and went back fair and hit the bag at first and again
everyone thought it was going to be a foul ball, but it wasn't.
The weird 3U out is one away as the runner advanced to second.

Locher bats righty with one on and one down.
Another full count and a little nubber back to the mound goes 1-3 for two away as the runner goes to third.

Barr, the righty DH, bats with two down and one on.
He grounds one up the middle and Hinojosa is there and his low throw is dug out and that retires the side.

Eight played and Texas leads 9-4.

Cantu leads off for Texas.
A high deep drive to left center goes off the fence for a lead double.

Stell up again with one on.
The righty hitter chops it to short and the 6-3 out is made as Cantu goes to third.

Gurwitz up with one down and a man on third.
Zane puts a charge into one and the it clears the left field fence for a two run dinger, his first of the season.

Texas leads 11-4.

That should put this one to bed.

Johnson gets another turn as the top of the order is up once more.

The coach is out and that is all for Hock.

He lines one to the alley in right center and its an easy triple with his wheels.

Shaw bats with one on and one down.

Pitching coach out and yet another change is made.
 
The latest to take the mound for Stanford is lefty, Andrew Summerville.

Shaw will face him with Johnson on third and one down.
He laces a single to right and that scores another run.

Texas leads 12-4.

Hinojosa bats with one away and one down.
A ground ball to third and it's a 5-4-3 double play to retire the side.

Texas puts it away and needs three outs to split the series leading 12-4 to the bottom half of the ninth.
 
Right handed freshman Connor Mayes, comes in to pitch the ninth for Texas, as we go from freshman to freshman.

Jeff Klein will lead off for the Cardinal from the right side.
A shot to left is right at Johnson for one away.

Pinch hitter Zarubin, bat right handed and K's swinging for two down.

Edman, at the top of the order and he flies out to center to end it.

Texas gets the win 12-4 and splits the series with Stanford.

I need a break and will be back to summarize this game and the series in a bit.
