Texas vs. Rice At Rice Regional

French goes to the hill for the sixth.

Hoelscher leads off with a ground ball up the middle and it goes under the glove of Hinojosa for a single to lead off.

Aquino up bunt and Gurwitz fields and a low throw is picked beautifully by Clemens at first for one out.
He can play some first base.

Ewing bats lefty with one out and the lead run at second.
He lines one deep and over Johnson in left and the double gives Rice the lead back 2-1. French hung the change there.

McDowell bats with one on and one down.
A fly ball to left is out two.

Byrd bats with one on and two down.
A liner right to Johnson in left retires the side.

Rice gets the run and the lead right back and leads 2-1 after six innings.

We do not know how to play from behind. I consider most games a lost when we are behind this late in the game. I am not optimistic that we can come from behind and any game...at least that past few years.

I think Augie, when recruiting, asks can you play some D...good come to Texas we can work on your hitting when you get there.

Clemens leads off for Texas in the seventh against Fox.

He K's looking for one away.

Gurwitz bats with one down.
A ground ball deep in the hole is fielded by the shortstop and he eats it and it's an infield hit.

Marlow at the top of the order up with one on and one down.
Dear God make it stop! A pitch gets away and the catcher can't find the ball. Gurwitz stops and looks and then goes and then goes for third and is gunned down for two away.

I don't even want to talk about our base running any more.

Son naturally now Marlow singles to right

Graham comes out, but Fox stays in.

Johnson bats with two down and one on
He pops up to second to retire the side.

Stretch time in Houston and the Horns are killing themselves and Rice leads because of it 2-1.

Reeves leads off against French in the seventh.

He bats righty and a high chop is fielded by Hinojosa and the long throw and the stretch by Clemlens and he is ruled safe on a bang bang play. He looked out.

So one on and no outs for Stainback.
Skip comes from the dugout as the infield gathers.
He returns to the dugout.
Stainback back in from the left side.
He wants to bunt, but the count goes full.
A ground ball off the glove of Clemens goes into right and Shaw comes up throwing and a rocket to third is in time for one away. What a throw that was.

That changes the complexion of the inning.

Teykl bats with one on and one down from the left side.
The batter went to second on the throw to third.
A ground ball to second is two outs as the runner goes to third.

Cook is the top of the order and a big out to get to stay in the game.

Here comes Skip and that is all for French

Pitching change.

The new pitcher is lefty Travis Duke, in to face the lefty hitter Cook.

He bats with two down and a big potential run at third.
He walks him to put two on at the corners.

So out comes Skip again to get Duke and bring in a right hander.

Another pitching change and it's Morgan Cooper on for Texas.

Hoelscher bats with two down and two on.
Need an out to stay in this one most likely.
Keep an eye on Cook at first.
A ground ball toward the hole and Hinojosa fields and makes a long against the body throw to get him by a step and retire the side.

Seven in the books and Rice leads 2-1.

Fox stays out there to face Payton in the eighth.

Big at bat for the senior and he lines another double down the left field line. We are really going to miss him when he is gone.

Here comes Graham to get Fox this time.

Pitching change.

Barera bats with no outs and Payton at second.

He faces the new pitcher and former Horn Trevor Teykl, who Texas has seen multiple times this season.

So does he bunt? Most likely he does.
I can see it either way and he doesn't square on the first pitch.
He lines a single up the middle and Payton has to hold and then goes to third.

Runners on the corners and no outs for Carter.

Come on Texas, for once break through and have a big inning and win a big game.

Carter bats right handed and has to put into play.
He takes a called strike three on the outside corner, maybe not, but you can't take it there. You just can't.

Hinojosa up with one down and still runners at the corners.
A fly ball to medium right and here comes Payton and I think he would have run through a brick wall to score and he makes it to tie it up.

Shaw up and he is hit by the first pitch and that puts the lead run in scoring position.

Two on and two out for Clemens, who has struggled, but a hit here would make it all fine.

A full count and any kind of hit gives Texas the lead.
He K's swinging and barbs are slung back and forth between the teams.

Texas ties it up 2-2, but it seems they can never get over the hump.

Bottom of the eighth on Sunday morning in Houston.

John Curtis is the new Texas pitcher in the eighth.

He faces Aquino leading off for Rice batting righty.
He blows a fast ball by him for one away.

Ewing, who has hurt the Horns bats with one down.
A liner to deep right is hauled down by Shaw at the track for two down.

McDowell bats with two down from the left side.
Another liner to Shaw ends the inning and retires the side in order.

The ninth comes in the most important game of the season to date tied at 2-2.

Teykle pitches the ninth for Rice.

Gurwitz leads off for Texas and he pops up the first pitch to short for one down.

Marlow bats with one down.
Marlow blast one to right and again, how did that stay in the yard?
It goes off the glove and the wall and I hate to say it, but he thought it was gone and stood there and I think it costs him and Texas 90 feet on what could have been a triple if he busts it out of the box.

Teykl is gone now.

Pitching change.

Zech Lemond, a right hander is the new Owl pitcher.

He faces Johnson with one down and the lead run at second.
Once again the Horns need a clutch hit in a big game.
It's up to Johnson you would think as Payton would be walked if first is open with two down.
A line drive is just foul down the right field line.
Then he takes a fast ball down the middle for a K looking.
Two down, so frustrating.

Payton bats and of course they put him on.

Barrera bats with two down and two on and the game on the line.
How many chances can Texas have and not get it done?
Of course a liner goes right to the right fielder to retire the side.

Bottom of the ninth and you need extras to win it now tied at 2-2.

Thanks for the updates! Let's go, Horns.

Curtis back out again for the ninth.

He needs to hang a 0 to keep things going.

Byrd leads off and pops up behind the mound and Gurwitz takes it for one away.

Reeves up and be careful here as he has some pop with one down.
He had a good hack, but thankfully off the end of the bat and the fly ball to left is two away.

Stainback bats with two down.
He K's swinging to retire the side in order.

Extras it is and this game has even more meaning now as the loser will be totally drained for an afternoon game tomorrow.

Tied at 2-2.

The new Rice pitcher is Jon DuPlantier, another pitcher Texas say multiple times this year.

Carter leads off for Texas and drives one deep to left and it dies at the track for one away.

Hinojosa bats with one down.
Another fly ball to left is two quick outs.

Shaw bats with two down.
Get on and steal a bag and then a run.
A chopper up the middle can't be handled and it's an infield hit.

There is part one of a run.
Now steal a bag.

Clemens up with two down and one on.
Another fly ball to left retires the side.
Why not try to steal there?

Bottom of ten and need another stop on defense.
Tied at 2-2.

Curtis out once more and this is when it gets dangerous for him after he has been seen once.

Connor Teykl leads off and a fly ball to left is one down.

Cook at the top of the order bats with one down.
A low liner on a hop is fielded by Hinojosa for two down.

Hoelscher up with two down.
He K's swinging and Curtis is dealing so far as the side goes down in order.

It's 1 am and the top of the eleventh tied at 2-2.

DuPlantier out again and a big inning for Texas, but aren't they all.

Gurwitz leads off and then back to the top of the order.
If he can get on it sets things up nicely.
A liner to center and a dive is missed and it's a double leading off.

Here we go, got to get it done here and now.

Marlow up at the top of the order to bunt you would think.
He doesn't bunt and lines a single up the middle and here comes Gurwitz to score.

Texas leads 3-2 finally.

Keep this going.

Johnson bats with no outs and will he bunt?
He can't get it down and then K's swinging.
The execution is just keeping us from winning this game big.

Payton up with one down and one on.
How about a hit and run?
The count runs full and you have to send him here.
A little ground ball to short is a 6-4 force for two away.

Come on send Payton here.

Barrera up with two down.
A fly ball to right retires the side.

Texas has the lead and Curtis trying to close it out. We have seen this act before. Time to rewright the script.

Texas leads 3-2 to the bottom of eleven.

So here we go with Curtis out trying to win it.

He faces the meat of the Rice order with Aquino leading off.

He bats right handed and a fly ball to center is a big out one.

Ewing, big power hitter bats righty with one down.
A liner to left is a bigger out two.

One big out to get in McDowell.
He bats lefty and now one big strike to get.
He K's swinging and Texas wins 3-2!

What a game and now Texas is in the cat bird seat.
No handshake by Rice and I think back to the days of Okie State and Gary Ward when his teams would do that.

Texas with two chances to win the Regional.

A big win in the biggest of games for the Horns.

Oh by the way, you can suck it Aggy, you get Rice and not another "Super Bowl" game for you.

The game was so frustrating for so long, but the ending was opposite of what the entire season had been before tonight and that is the most satisfying feeling in a long time for the Burnt Orange faithful and team.

Curtis was dealing tonight, filthy.

I loved the determination from the team. Lots of close plays with Texas playing through the adversity to take it.

Way to go Horns!
