Texas vs. Rice At Rice Regional

Pimp Daddy
First pitch is scheduled for 8:40 pm.

I think it goes without saying this is probably the biggest game of the Regional. Win tonight and you wait for the other two teams left to play while you rest.

Then the winner of that game has to beat you twice to win the Regional.

I don't think that Texas can win this Regional unless they win tonight. They are just to short on pitching without Peters to lose this game and then win three straight, with the last two against Rice.

The offenses has never been able to sustain a very high level against quality teams with good pitching.

The only ones that should get excited about another Aggy vs. Texas game is Rice, because it means they are waiting for whoever wins and has no pitching left like A&M would or little pitching like Texas would have left.

Of course Aggy wouldn't care about winning the Regional if they could beat Texas in a rematch. It would make their season and then Rice would destroy them.

Rice has the advantage in nearly every way in this game.
They have their ace pitcher in Blake Fox, a lefty with a 12-0 record and they are playing on their home field.

Texas has right hander Parker French, who can dominate a game if he is on his game. Texas may have as many or even more fans at the game than Rice.

So here it is "The Championship Game" before the championship game so to speak. I think it is for Texas and
so it's again one of those must games that the Horns have
failed to win all year. It ever there was a time to reverse that trend it is now.

I will try to get the line-up card again when it comes out, but as I type this I learn it is raining again in Houston and the tarp has been put down.

So in the meantime Augie does Austin eateries on LHN.
Franklins BQ for the second time today so far for Augie.

Meanwhile, LSU is pulling away from UH. It's now 5-1 in Baton Rouge in the top of the 7th. The Tigers starter could probably go the distance, and there is no way UH will win if he can last.

Were these start times dictated by the NCAA or the host team? Knowing of the possibility of rain today, seems like they could have started today's games a couple of hours earlier.

OK, I'm going to have to try that Chicken Fried Beef Rib from Jack Allen's after watching that!

Not only is Blake Fox 12-0, he's 18-0 since his college career. I'd like to think the odds are against him ending up 19-0.

So we finally get underway in the biggest game of this season for the Horns.

Marlow leads off batting lefty against the big left hander Blake Fox with a perfect 12-0 record on the season.

He chops one to first for the first out of the game.

Johnson bats right handed with one down.
He K's swinging on a big change for two away.

Payton of the 96 game on base streak bats with two down from the left side.
A ground ball to second retires the side in order.

Rice comes to bat for the first time after holding the Horns scoreless.

Parker French to the mound to face Rice in their half of the first.

He faces the right fielder Keenan Cook, batting from the left side leading off.
The count runs full and a roller to short is charged by Hinojosa and a good throw is one down.

Shane Hoelscher, the third baseman bats righty with one away.
A two hopper to second is two down.

Michael Aquino, the left fielder bats righty with two down.
He flies out to right to retire the side in order.

Both teams go down in order in the first and it's 0-0.

Fox starts his second inning of the game against Barrera leading off for Texas.

He steps in from the right side and a ground ball to short and the throw is airmailed over first and the error puts Barrera at second.

Carter bats with no outs and a runner at second.
He lays down the bunt too hard back to the mound and a throw to third gets Barrera for one down.

That hurts as you had a great chance to jump out in front.

Hinojosa bats righty with one down and one on.
Carter is picke off and the throw to second hits him on the helmet for another error.

This is an ugly inning for both teams.

Hinojosa now can put the Horns on top with a hit.
A high pop to short is two down.

It's up to Shaw now batting lefty to score the run.
A fly ball to right retires the side.

Poor execution by both teams is a stalemate.

So on to the bottom of two 0-0.

French comes out for his second inning.

He faces the first baseman Skyler Ewing leading off for the Owls batting right handed.
He singles up the middle to lead off.

Chase McDowell, the DH bats left handed with no outs.
A wild pitch moves the runner to second and Texas does what Rice did in the top half of the inning.
Actually it's ruled a passed ball on Barrera, a strange call.

McDowell back in and he walks to put two on.

Leon Byrd, the centerfielder will try to do what Texas couldn't and get a sac bunt down.
He does and with one away runners are at second and third.

John Clay Reeves, the catcher bats right handed and singles to right field.

Rice leads 1-0 on the rbi.

Stainback, the shortstop up now K's swinging for two away.

Runners on the corners with two down for Connor Teykl, the second baseman.
He flies out to center to retire the side.

Rice jumps out in front because they could execute and as a result lead 1-0 after two played.

Mr. Patterson,

Whatever it takes. Get it done.

Fox takes his place on the hill for the start of the third.

He faces Clemens batting from the left side leading off.
A fly ball to center is one away.

Gurwitz bats righty with one down.
A ground ball off the end of the bat goes right between he legs of Fox and the shortstop fields and throws him out for two down.

Marlow, at the top of the order bats with two down.
He chops a ball up the middle that gets through for a single and the first Texas hit.

Johnson bats with two down and one on.
He K's swinging again to retire the side.

Bottom of three and Rice leads 1-0.

French out again for the Rice third.

He faces the top of the Rice order in Cook.
He steps in from the left side and a high pop up behind the bag at second is caught by Marlow for one down.

Hoelscher bats righty with one down.
A fly ball to right is two away.

Aquino bats righty with two down.
He swings and misses as the ball gets away to reach on a wild pitch.

So in reality sort of Ewing bats with three down and one on.
Aquino gets a big jump and steals second.
Can't let Rice get a cheap run here.
They don't as a fast ball below the hands ties him up and the swinging K is held to retire the side.

Three innings gone at Reckling and Rice leads 1-0.

Fox back to the rubber for the fourth and leading off for the Horns is Payton.

He steps in lefty and he lines one up the middle and it's flagged by Fox for one down.

Barrera bats with one down.
A shallow pop to left is caught by the shortstop for two away.

Carter bats righty with two down and the bases clear.
A liner to left falls for a single.

Hinojosa bats with two down and one on.
Maybe make something happen here with the running game and manufacture a run somehow.
A ground ball to short ends the inning.

Bottom of four and it's 1-0 Rice.

French comes back for the Rice fourth.

McDowell leads off against him from the left side.
After a mammoth drive goes just foul down the right field line, he K's swinging on the change for the first out.

Byrd bats with one down.
He grounds to first unasissted for two outs.

Clay bat with two down and the bases empty.
He K's swinging on a check swing to retire the side in order

Four innings gone and Rice leads 1-0.

Fox out again for the fifth to become the pitcher of record if possible.

Shaw leads off against him from the left side.
He rips a single to right field for a lead runner.

Clemens up to again try to bunt him over.
He does the job and Shaw moves to second.

Gurwitz looks for the elusive second hit in an inning to score the run and tie it up.
A fly ball to right is two down and Shaw tags and goes to third.

Marlow comes up at the top of the order needing the clutch hit or the Horns need a Rice mistake to tie things.
A pitch almost gets far enough away from the catcher, but not quite to score the run.
The count goes full on a borderline pitch that has the crowd howling.
A fly ball to left ends the inning.

Halfway through this winner's bracket game and Rice leads 1-0 and it seems like a big one run as the innings go by.

French tries to keep things close as he comes out for the fifth.

Stainback leads off for the Owls from the left side.
A ground ball up the middle and Hinojosa ranges over and
makes the play for one away.

Teykl bats lefty with one down.
A ground ball to second is two away.

Cook, at the top of the order bats lefty with two down.
An overhand curve sets him down swinging and retires the side in order.

Five innings played and Rice leads 1-0.

Scott Wilson is like a Longhorn excitement-meter on this broadcast.

Started the game pensive and steady when Fox was mowing us down, no slowly bobbing back and forth.

Fox starts the Texas sixth facing Johnson who he has fanned twice.

He steps in right handed a high hopper that the second baseman backs up on and Ben beats the wrap and the infield hit is a lead runner.

Here we go again as Johnson is picked off for one away.
Our base running has been a circus for a long time now.

Payton bats now with one down as his on base streak and the game is in some serious jeopardy it seems.
He drives one the opposite way over the left fielders head for a double and doesn't that pick off look bad now?
That's 97 games now on base for Mark.

Barrera looks to tie the game.
Payton doing it all steals third with a huge jump.
Barrera blasts one off the wall in left and that ties things at 1-1.

How did that stay in the park?.
Graham comes out for a meeting.
He leaves after a quick chat.

Carter bats with one down and still a man in scoring position.
He reaches for a pitch a foot outside and pops out to first for two down.

Hinojosa bats with still a chance for the lead.
They will walk him intentionally to face Shaw.

So a lefty vs lefty match up that Rice wanted.
Shaw had a very good swing his last at bat against Fox for single.
Graham out to argue a foul tip was swung on and missed, to no avail.
Then he K's swinging to retire the side.

Texas ties it at 1-1, but oh what could have been without the base running mistake.

Bottom of the sixth.
