Texas vs. OU Game 1

Gurwitz leads off the eighth for Texas against Krittenbrink.

He grounds to first and after a juggle by the first baseman he flips to the pitcher covering for a 3-1 first out.

Marlow brings back the top of the order for Texas with one down.
The count goes full after about five foul balls and many OU fans call for strike three.
He finally grounds out to first and the OU first baseman takes it to the bag for two down.

Johnson bats with two down and nobody on.
He lines out to left to retire the side in order.

The bottom of the eighth happens now and it happens tied at 8-8.

Cooper back out in the eighth faces James batting from the right side.

The count runs full and it's a crucial pitch coming now.
Two pitches are fouled off to increase the tension.

Then he swings and misses for a big lead off out for Cooper and Texas.

That brings Alspaugh batting left handed with one away.
Yet another full count comes and this time a ground ball goes to first and Clemens takes it to the bag for two away.

Lorenzana, without a hit in this wild game bats with two away and the bases clean.
He swings and a foul tip is held by Barrera for the K to retire the side in order again.

The ninth is here and we are tied 8-8.

Morgan Cooper has back to back 1-2-3 innings.
He has been consistently good in the middle innings in relief.
Strange game. Maybe we can pull it out in ninth.

OU comes with their closer, Ralph Garza Jr. a right hander.

He faces Payton and it's down to cases as the ninth starts for Texas.
He K's looking for a big out one for Garza and OU.

Barrera bats with one away and he K's swinging on three pitches for two away.

Shaw tries to keep the inning going for the Horns.
The count goes full and then Shaw flies out to right in foul ground to retire the side in order.

So if Texas is to win this first game of the series it will have to come in extra innings.

OU comes in for their last swings in regulation and we are tied 8-8.

Cooper faces Ake as the OU ninth begins.

The nine hole hitter for the Sooners K's swinging for one away.

Aiken bats as the OU top of the order is back again.
A fly ball to left is caught by Johnson for two down.

Haley bats with two away and the bases clear.
The count runs full again as it has multiple times.
He lines one to the gap in right center and the wind helps knock it down and Payton runs it down to retire the side in order once again.

Nine up and nine down for Cooper. We have played nine innings and it's nine o'clock on the time.

It all means free baseball in Norman and we are tied 8-8.

Hinojosa leads off the tenth for Texas as the OU closer is extended for a second inning.

He rips a long one over the left field wall for something.
What is that thing when you hit one out of the park?
Oh yeah, a homer and it means Texas leads now 9-8.

Carter bloops a single to center to reach with still no outs.

Clemens bats lefty trying to move him over.
He can't get it down and with a 1-2 count he is swinging.
The count runs full and he walks to put two on and no outs.

The bunt is still in order for Gurwitz as he bats right handed against the laboring Garza.
He instead swings away and singles to center to load the bases.

OU had brought the left fielder to stand on third and the corner infielders charged what they thought would be a bunt.

I have seen outfielders brought in before to plug gaps in the infield with the winning run at third and less than two down, but never that way before.

Garza is gone and the pitching change comes with the bases loaded and no outs with Texas leading 9-8.

Hahaha!
First we hit a long home run into some pine trees, first of the season by C.J. Hinojosa. Then we get two on, and OU goes into an unusual defense, bringing the center fielder in as a fifth infielder, which you can see leaves two outfielders to cover the entire outfield.
Augie, recognizing that this could be a good time to hit towards the outfield, takes the bunt off, and Zane Gurwitz pops it into center field for a base hit, loading the bases with no outs. He hit it right where the center fielder normally stands, but he happened to be standing on second base waiting for a bunt. Hilarity reigns in Norman.
Now it's 3-2 on Marlow, who draws a bases loaded walk to score the run, making it 10-8.
Strange game indeed.

Hayes comes in to pitch for OU against Marlow at the top of the order.

He has the bases loaded and nobody out. Need more right here and right now.

Naturally the count runs full and naturally Marlow fouls it off.
He walks and another big run scores to make it 10-8.

Johnson bats with the bases still loaded and a chance to really put this thing in a good place for the Horns.
He K's swinging for one away.

Payton bats with the bases loaded and one down.
Mark has no hits in this wild game and he needs something here to add to the lead and give Cooper or whoever pitches he tenth for Texas some working room.

Payton swings and misses for a K and the ball gets away and Clemens tries to score and is out at the plate to retire the side.

Payton says he got a piece of it, but the ump says no.
Augie is out for a talk with the ump to no avail.

The result of all this is a 10-8 Texas lead as we go to the bottom of the tenth.

To compound the strangeness, our next two batters strike out, then the runner on third tried to steal home and was out. Maybe it was a hit and run or something (?). Why would we do that?
And not only that...we pull Morgan Cooper who had just finished three perfect innings of relief, put in John Curtis, and he walks the leadoff batter.
Then the OU batter is called out on strikes, tells the umpire what he thought about the call, and was tossed from the game.
Next batter pops out to outfield, Okies down to their last out. It would be somewhat miraculous to win this game. It is 2-2on the batter, who hit a tapper to second, and Marlow makes a good fielding play and throws him out at first.
Horns win!

Cooper retired all nine men he faced, but he is lifted in favor of Texas closer John Curtis.

The right hander faces Neuse leading off for OU in the tenth.
He walks on four pitches for a lead base runner.

The potential tying run comes up in Hermelyn.
You have to hope all those stranded runners don't come back to bite Texas.

He K's looking and he is ejected from the game to join his head coach with one down.

Nuese ran on the pitch and is at second.

Buentello bats lefty and flies out to left for a big out two.

James stands between Curtis and Texas for a first game of the series win.
He is still the potential tying run with a runner at second.

A ground ball to second goes 4-3 and Texas wins 10-8 as the throw beat a head first slide by James.

Curtis gets the save and quells any talk of why Cooper didn't come out again. He is still able to pitch some more and Cooper could well be needed later in the series.

Well that was everything and more and less than you could hope for. Both teams did good and bad things that could have won or lost the game.

In the end Texas got the runs they needed in a pressure situation that overcame some sloppy fielding with four errors.

Cooper came in and closed down OU and gave the Horns the chance to win and they did it.

Inclimate weather may come into play from here on as storms are expected Sunday.

You have the OU spring football game tomorrow and a national tv game on ESPNU for the third game of this series.

Lots of things to determine still. Tonight though, Texas gets a big win and takes over first place in the conference. That's all anybody needs to know for the present.

Augie was not very happy in the postgame radio interview. He says we gave them several of the runs they got, but then he finished by saying there is something special about this horn team, which has bounced back from adversity several times this year, like in this one.
I guess on the attempted steal of home, the ball had got away from the catcher briefly, but I didn't hear that mentioned on the radio.
Crazy, crazy game.

Good stuff NBHorn7 ... as usual - Whew, Horns win with a close one with a TD and FG over hated sooners who got a TD and a 2 point conversion.

Accurate, it appears it was a dropped third strike, not a steal of home. Payton thought he got a piece, but the umpire disagreed.
