Texas holds an 22-18 edge in the overall series. The Horns will be seeking to snap a three game losing streak to OU. They will be looking for their first win in Norman since February 2010. Horns are 2-3 in league play and seek to win two in a row on Saturday. OU comes into this game at 3-2 in league play. They will be looking to string together two straight wins after alternating Ws and Ls in their five Big 12 games starting with a win over ISU. The Sooners are 2-0 at home to start off Big 12 play. Texas is seeking their second straight road win.
Aaryn Ellenberg (#3, 5-7 Soph. G) leads three Sooners in double figures with an average of 18.4 ppg. She had a 31 pt outburst against KSU this past Wednesday. Whitney Hand (#25, 6-1 RS Jr. G) is second at 15.0 ppg. Their third leading scorer, Joanna McFarland (#53, 6-3 Jr. F/C; 11.0 ppg) had surgery this week to repair a broken jaw and will be out at least two weeks. She will miss this game. Ellenberg (34-84, 40.5%) and Hand (25-58, 43.1%) are the primary shooters for OU. Morgan Hook (#10, 5-10 Soph. G) has taken the 3rd most shots in conference (7-31, 22.6%). With McFarland (15-27, 55.6%) out, Nicole Griffin (#4, 6-6 Soph. C) is the most accurate shooter for OU, hitting on 9-17 for 52.9%. OU is lighting up from BTA, hitting 44.7% in league play. That is tops in the league. McFarland’s 69.2% from BTA was the best on the team but Ellenberg’s 53.8% (14-26) is impressive as well and leads OU in number of threes made and attempted. Hand has hit 5 of 15 for 33.3% while Hook is at 16.7% on 2 of 12. DaShawn Harden (#22, 5-9 Fr. G) is the other Sooner with double digit attempts from BTA at 4-10 for 40.0%. No other Sooner has attempted a trey. Hand has taken 7 more FTs than any other Sooner and has hit on 20-24 for a percentage of 83.3%. Ellenberg (10-14, 71.4%), Sharane Campbell (#24, 5-10 Fr. G; 11-17, 64.7%), and Griffin (11-14, 78.6%) are the other Sooners that have trekked to the FT line at least 10 times.
With McFarland’s 7.8 rpg, Hand now their leading rebounder at 5.8 rpg. Kaylon Williams (#42, 6-3 Fr F) is second at 5.4 rpg. Hand is the leading assist player with 20 while Hook chips in with 19. Ellenberg and Harden each have 10 assists in league play. Griffin is the leading shot blocker with nine while Williams has five. Ellenberg’s 17 steals tops the team while Harden with 12 is the other Sooner with double digit steals.
With McFarland out, OU has ten players available. Two have yet to get into league games: Jacqueline Jackson (#34, 6-2 Soph. F) and Katherine Zander (#20, 6-4 Fr. F). Of the other eight, all have played in the five league games today. Jelena Cerina (#12, 6-5 Sr. C) averages 9 minutes per game while the other seven average at least 14 mpg. Starters for the last game were: Ellenberg, Hand, Hook, Campbell and Griffin. Campbell replaced McFarland in the starting lineup while the other four have started all five league games. Hand (38.4 mpg), Ellenberg (33.8 mpg) and Hook (28.2 mpg) are the only Sooners averaging over 20 mpg.
Horns are led in scoring by two players with double figure averages: Chassidy (16.4 ppg)and Ashleigh (11.4 ppg). Three others are averaging at least 7 ppg: Ashley (8.4 ppg), Yvonne (7.8 ppg) and Cokie (7.3 ppg). Chassidy comes into the OU game having hit for at least 20 pts in her last three game. Chassidy (27-73, 37.0%) and Ashleigh (21-61, 34.4%) are the primary shooters for Texas. Ashley at 51.4% (19-37) has the highest FG % on the team. Four Horns, led by Chassidy’s 10-29 (34.5%) have attempted 3s in Big 12 games. Chelsea’s 42.9% (6-14) leads the team in 3pt %. Ashleigh (4-15, 26.7%) and Yvonne (2-13, 15.4%) are the other Horns who have been major threats from BTA in conference play. Those four are the four Horns that have gone to the FT line at least 10 times. Chassidy is 18-20 (90.0%), Ashleigh hit 11-16 (68.8%) while Yvonne and Chelsea each has connected on 7-12 (58.3%). Anne Marie’s 80% on 4-5 FTs ranks second percentage wise.Yvonne has 30 assists over the past three games to give her 38 in league play. Ashleigh’s 12 assists are second on the team. Ashley has 12 blocks to lead in that category while Nneka’s four ranks second. Cokie, Chelsea and Anne Marie have 3 blocks each. Yvonne (11) and Ashley (10) are the two Horns with double digit steals in conference. Cokie’s 7.0 rpg leads the team with Ashley (6.6 rpg), Chassidy (6.0 rpg) and Nneka (5.8 rpg) are right behind.
All 11 players that have played in Big 12 games should be available for this game although Cokie could still be held out as she recovers from a calf injury that kept her out of the last two games. Anne Marie and Nneka took turns starting those two games. The other four starters in Big 12 games have remained the same: Ashley, Chassidy, Yvonne and Ashleigh. Eight of the 11 are averaging at least 13 mpg with Chassidy (33.6 mpg), Ashleigh (31.4 mpg) and Yvonne (31.0 mpg) are all averaging over 30 mpg. Eight have played in all five games: Chassidy, Ashleigh, Ashley, Yvonne, Chelsea, Anne Marie, Nneka and Kayla.
Projected starters are based on the last game and could change based on availability of players coming back from injury. Cokie could start in place of Nneka.

One thing to keep in mind when guarding Ellenberg: “A couple of the 3s were from so far beyond the arc that a couple of players from the Kansas State men's team watching from the stands simply shook their heads.” Like Andrea Riley had for OSU, Ellenberg has NBA range. The Texas defender on her will need to understand and remember that. Her versatility in getting her shots, driving, dishing, etc, make her a difficult defensive assignment. Hand has been starting at the 4 for OU and Texas needs to remember that she can shoot the 3 as well as make that extra pass for an assist. None of the other Sooner posts is a threat to shoot the 3. OU will be concentrating on disrupting Chassidy’s offensive game. Ashley and the other Texas posts will need to hit their shots and rebound well to keep OU from running their break and allow Texas to do the same. Texas, for a change, may actually have an edge in number of players they can rotate in, unless Jeffcoat and Zander for OU see their first action in Big 12 games. This will also highlight Texas’ experienced backcourt against a younger OU backcourt. If Cokie playing significant minutes along side Ashley, Texas will enjoy a definite height advantage inside against OU. Texas will still need to remember that Hand is an outstanding 3pt shooter and that someone needs to pressure her when she slides out. Griffin for OU and Ashley for Texas will present big shot blocking obstacles for anyone venturing into the paint.

Both teams depend primarily on their starters for scoring although the benches provide good minutes and scoring. Both teams are similar in many areas but OU is outstanding in 3pt shooting, almost doubling up the Horns in number of 3s made per game. Horns should be stronger in the post while the perimeter could just about be called even. Both thrive on stealing the ball although both have had issues with TOs. While both are good at rebounding, they tend to not dominate on the boards. If both teams are making their shots, this could be a very entertaining game. Both are experienced in winning close games which this could be. For Texas, the biggest challenges will be stopping OU’s 3pt shooting and slowing down Ellenberg while not turning over the ball. OU will seek to force Texas to rely on someone other than Chassidy to score. Texas has been adept at getting Chassidy open looks through movement, screens, and on the fast break. Chassidy has done a very good job of not forcing shots. Both teams have done a good job of getting others involved in scoring when their primary scorer is drawing a lot of defensive pressure.
