Texas vs Louisville 03/20/2023 REMATCH

Sonya def said at the end of that exchange “call me p**** again,” to HVL. At least that’s what my lip reading skills interpreted :e-face-tears:. Sonya seemed to repeat that twice in the video above.

I prefer to stay positive until the fat lady sings. I think our players deserve at least that. Well, the fat lady sung tonight. We had an amazing season considering what the cards dealt us. We had more injuries than I can ever recall. Amo was a huge blow. Sonya a dagger. Rori returned but her shot didn’t return with her. Jones was a warrior. We relied on freshmen much more than anyone would want to. And Vic never seemed to turn the corner like in previous seasons. As snake-bit as we were, it’s amazing we had as good a season as we did. A lot of work to be done in the off season. Big 12 Champs. That would have been enough for most programs.

Everyone have a good rest of the year. See you next season. Peace. Out.

Rori, Taylor, and Shaylee are literally the only ones that would totally surprise me.

Shay probably belongs on that list too but I can envision a world where she’s ready.

I don’t think AMo would transfer. But again it wouldn’t totally surprise me.

I could see anyone else making that decision. I don’t think they would but I’ve been shocked before.

As someone mentioned, we missed the senior leadership of JAT and Warren. Begs the question about why some of our transfers out last season did so…
Vic isn’t going to let Moore or Harmon go. Besides they both live Texas. Anything could happen but I seriously doubt those two would think about leaving. Anyone else wouldn’t be a surprise.

Definitely did not expect to get blown out at home, especially considering that Louisville barely squeaked past 12 seed Drake on Friday evening. We never led tonight. I didn't watch the Drake game, but it doesn't seem like our coaching staff scouted very well to come up with a successful gameplan similar to what Drake used against Louisville.

In the post-game radio interview with Coach Lovato, she told Craig Way that "we just couldn't keep their two guards in front of us". That sums up most of our losses this season. I knew we'd miss our quick perimeter defenders in Joanne Allen-Taylor and Aliyah Matharu this season; I just didn't realize how much until the season got underway. For sure glad to have brought in Morris and Gonzales (more for their offense than defense), but this roster as a whole had too many deficiencies, especially against teams with quick, athletic backcourts. And, even our 2 losses against a super-nonathletic team like Iowa State left me puzzled as to how we couldn't defend them better; they were not a good team.

And, to sound like a broken record, I just don't understand why offense was so difficult for this squad. Vic rightly says that "the game is a lot easier when you can make shots". We were just not good offensively this season against quality opponents (and the late season injury to Sonya just something we couldn't recover from). Happy the team stuck together to win the Big 12 title; it was a challenging season for sure.

Yes. Their team reluctantly exchanged handshakes. Sonya held Van Lith’s (sp?) arm and leaned in and said something. It didn’t not go well and nearly caused a brawl. Did I mention I love Sonya?
Their players (like their coach) are hard to like - a lot of showboating, waving “bye bye” to fans at the end.
Earlier their coach was cussing and yelling at the officials at the scorers table because he thought the score was wrong. He told them “get your sh*t together” and “stop f^*king this up.”
I may have told him “quit acting like a child.”
I liked him better when he waved and smiled at me and told me “you’re a fine person.”

I wonder why Vic didn’t go after him? I thought he didn’t like the “his” workers treated badly.

Aren’t they different for the NCAA tournament?
No. There were many of the same staff who work every UT home game including the operations person for the Moody. They just wore different gear (NCAA shirts etc.). Vic was far away and didn’t see any of it. Meanwhile Jeff rarely stayed in his coaching box. Refs didn’t care.

Hornfans posts were right in their view this was not a good matchup for us. But none of us could have predicted that we could not make a basket, could not shoot free throws and would lose most rebounds out of our hands. When you add no three point shooting and the fact that they easily defended Gonzales the entire game, Louisville embarrassed us on the court.

If Softball can pull a pac freshman all conference pitcher from Arizona with NIL money, surely BB can do the same thing. Time to use this tool the way other schools do for women's sports.

Quite honestly Van Lith is the best player I've seen all season. She may be a %^#@%, but she's a great talent. If she had been in the B12 she should've gotten player of the year over Joens.

But none of that accounts for Texas' failure to execute on a basic level. Have they not been taught basic physics of shooting. Do they expect throwing the ball up into the bottom of the rim it will levitate upward and down through the hoop? Do they need a Physics prof to come in and teach them about basic velocity and angles?

And Rori starting the 2nd half throwing the ball right into triple coverage resulting in an easy layup on the other end. Just not smart BB.

We definitely need some better offensive players. Defense is great, but you have to score.

I'm not glad the season is over, but I am glad the season is over... if that makes sense. This has been a tough season to watch.
Yep, other than when Texas beat down Oklahoma, this has been a tough, tense season. Despite all our prognostications, analysis, etc., we never knew what team was really gonna show up.

That was rough. They did everything better. Shot better, rebounded better, passed better, defended better.

I hear Taylor afterward say something like "None of us were ready to play the game. I'm not sure how that happened". Well, I'm not sure either, but it's concerning. Assuming that's not just a meaningless cliché that got used b/c you have to come up with something to say in the moment - how do you get to tipoff and just not be ready to start playing the game you're now playing?

I'm wondering if Vic's hyper-fitness mania needs to be tweaked. Even young, healthy athletes need some down time and body recovery, especially by the end of a long season. He talked a lot about them being tired in the last month and mostly blamed the conference schedule and tournament. Gotta be tough to balance their school and practice workloads.

He actually squeezed in some rest days and/or light practices that he normally doesn’t during that time

I lost a lot of respect for the coach (Waltz) when he was yelling at the Moody personnel and one time at his players when the game was clearly in hand. That team could have had 20 turnovers and it would not have mattered given how poorly we were shooting. Vic said they were friends but Waltz has no class.

Vic was the defensive coach at A&M when they won the natty. Look how far MSU went with him as the head coach. Texas went to the Elite 8 during his first two seasons here.

Did any of those teams have as short of a bench as we did this season? I don't know. But I think his success with the way he coaches defense speaks for itself.

Agreed. Let's not forget what a short bench he had in his first year, and still took a team of someone else's recruits to the Elite 8. The man can coach.

Perhaps the Memphis player sucker punching the Bowling Green player (who went to the floor) in the “good game” line at the end of a WNIT game could take its place?

I wish, and yet that ACTUAL punch happened last night, since Morris vs Van Lith. Maybe they won’t let it go because of higher profile teams.

Is this happening more or is it just being reported more?

I haven't given any energy to the "incident" between Morris and Van Lith because it deserves none. Players talk **** to each other all the time on and off the floor. What transpired between those two players is really no big deal at all, except the media is trying to turn it into something else. They want it to appear as though poor Little Red Riding Hood was in danger... the Big Bad Wolf was going to get her.
:smh:

I didn’t see it while at the game I have not watched the replay. When I heard about it was not surprised. I realized watching the Drake game in person how cocky HVL is, so even though I don’t know what Sonya had to say, I probably agreed with it.

Good. She deserves to face charges. Hopefully, those consequences will make other idoits think twice before taking such action in the future.

It would be better if we raised the level of sportsmanship.

Talking s&%# after getting stomped and scoring in the low single digits isn't a good look.
