Texas vs Jackson State 12/27/2023

Welp, it's a wrap. They probably don't make the tournament without Rori. And not being able to get a quality backup PG will also comeback to haunt the team.

Madison had 16 points and 9 assists. That’s a good stat line for any point guard. I think we’ll be fine if Rori is out for any length of time with Madison at the helm. Have a little faith.

We will be a different team, but this is a bit much in my opinion. There is now space on the court and oxygen in the gym that other players need to fill up and breathe in. We have those players and we have that coach. Jones needs to return - she will. Booker will have to grow up a lot faster now, but I believe she can. Amo needs to knock off the rest of that rust. It will happen. Gaston has to play her game and Gonzales and Holle need to go out with a bang. I think they can. Muhammad and Mwenentanda are an excellent supporting cast. Faye is capable of playing bigger than she has. The biggest questions are Codio and Maul. We didn’t get those answers tonight.

Harmon is a huge hit, but the bench is deep.

The bench is deep at the forward position but the guard position isn't deep at all. Rori made this team go. She's the best offense and defensive player on the team. And that's not even including the fact that she's also the best distributor on the team. Without Rori it's going to be an uphill battle.

Rori made this team go. She was the one player on this team that was irreplaceable. Without her production offensively, defensively, and as a distributor it's going to be an uphill battle.

Vic did not elaborate on Rori’s injury other than saying they’ll know more tomorrow. He mentioned that Jeremy will provide an update on social media.

It may just be my interpretation of the entire press conference but it seems like Vic knows more than he’s letting on and they are preparing for several games without Rori (at the minimum).

:(

Agree it is an uphill battle, but we are still a tournament caliber team without her. Booker had an incredible night at point so I would say the “no quality backup PG” is not entirely true. 16 points, 9 assists and one turnover in 32 minutes. I think our biggest challenge will be replacing Rori’s defensive effort. No way Jackson State breaks 50 had Rori been on the court.. I don’t have an answer for that one. :idk:

To be honest that was my first thought also. I was ready to throw the baby out with the bath water. Rori's injury is absolutely the most disappointing news we could possibly have. After giving it a little more thought, we're still a difficult match-up and a tough out for most teams.

The main problem with Rori's absence... aside from missing her scoring, defense, ball security, and playmaking ability... is it we are now in a position to be exploited in the backcourt by other teams' quick, athletic guards or even those teams with a lot of depth in their backcourt. That puts us at a disadvantage against numerous Big 12 teams.

It definitely hurts that we weren't able to pull in another guard through the portal, but it's not like we didn't try. Again, we were not a real attractive destination with Rori and Shalee returning... both all-conference players last year. We are pretty much right back where we were last year with no depth at the one and two positions.

Given the scenario, I feel we're in the right hands with Vic and his staff to navigate it as best as possible. I'm just wondering how long it's going to take for us to adjust, and what damage will be done to our conference record in the meanwhile. I'll adjust my expectations for the team, and focus on watching the process of how this team tries to overcome the situation.

I’m not sure how many fans remember the show Hee-Haw but they sang a song on there that exactly fits the occasion of Rori’s injury.

Gloom, despair, and agony on me
Deep, dark depression, excessive misery
If it weren’t for bad luck, I’d have no luck at all
Gloom, despair, and agony on me

Yep.
As @kurupt said, THE ONE PLAYER that we simply cannot replace....
This make me sick.

We will find out against Baylor because they are really good this year. And of course they want to beat Texas more than anything. Plus with Rori out they can smell the blood!! We have to shut down Sarah Andrews!!

I usually lean on the pessimistic side of things, so I'm surprising even myself by saying I'm withholding dire predictions until I see bad results in a Baylor caliber of game. UT has two, maybe three people who can play point guard. None of them have Rori's skills, but I think they can manage. There are a lot of good teams that have made the big dance without their stars. I think Texas will be one of those.

One of my main concerns is how we adjust defensively. Rori can eat the shirt off somebody's back and stay with them toe-to-toe without getting in foul trouble. We don't have any other guard who can do that. In fact, is there any other guard in the nation that can do that? We can ill afford for Booker or Gonzalez to get in foul trouble.

Will Vic adjust accordingly? If so, how? With Gaston trying to play her way back into game shape and Amo still overcoming the ACL injury, both of them are a step slower than normal also. We know Amina can guard most anybody, but she can't play the entire time. If there was ever a time to think about an aggressive matchup zone, this might be it.

I'm still lighting candles and sacrificing chickens here, but I'm expecting the worst news as I do.
I think we're still a very good team w/o Harmon mainly due to Madison being such a great passer and not playing like a freshman. She is our new "can't live without" player.
I think we make the tourney with no problem and get to the second weekend.

I think the game last night was Vic working his roster for the season minus Rori and Taylor. Booker 32 minutes, Holle 33, Gonzales 34 and Amina 23 but that was due to fouls and I'll bet he wants Amina on the floor most of the time, she is averaging 26 per game, the most behind Rori at 27.7

Has Vic ever played zone?

What is this talk about missing the tournament? Have any of you seen an ACL injury for which the player was walking around without crutches the same day/night as the injury? In 30 years of WBB, VB & MBB & quite a few ACLs, I haven't.
Yes, sometimes she was on crutches, but sometimes not. And no ice.

I don't recall having ever seen him play a zone, although there were rumors that once upon a time D. Jackson-Durret convinced him while at Mississippi State. Apparently they were behind and, after her convincing him to switch, they came back and won the game.

Hope's flame rekindled. I am clinging to this post. Thank you.

I've blown an ACL in my left knee.

I've torn the medial meniscus in a separate incident.

If there is connective tissue damage, given Rori's mobility, my guess trends towards meniscus issues. I have no knowledge of Rori's actual condition, just relating my own experience to what I could see last night.

I've had surgery on both knees... the last was torn meniscus. After the inflammation went down, I was playing summer league ball at full speed (no brace or support) in about 3 to 4 weeks. Once the summer season was over, had it scoped and was back playing without limitations (no brace or support) in six weeks.

From your lips to God’s ears.
