Texas versus Baylor in Austin

We didn't win, but did ourselves proud anyway. Where are all the Karen Aston haters? I'm sure she is to blame for all our mistakes tonight, right?
Actually there was a really good defensive game plan tonight. Once they figured it out at halftime they adjusted and pulled away. Awesome job with that pressure in the 4th quarter to close the gap. I wonder, if we had thrown that at them off an on throughout the game, if that might have made a difference. Good game by Danni, Sug and Jatarie!

If you cut the disparity in offensive rebounds and assists just in HALF, we win this game by double digits. Else where, we played about as well as we can.

Exactly.

We played #1 within 6 and they averaged 22 point wins against other B12 teams. I wanted a win. I really did. But if you want to say Karen is a bad coach then she’s the best bad coach ever because Baylor is that good.

Holmes is maddening. So good and yet so frustrating at times. I refuse to believe she is following the game plan and should be benched for it, but how do you not play her??? Collier just isn’t there yet.

Our last win against the Bears was in Waco so I’m willing to keep my hopes alive until then.

Don't forget inability to pass when leading the break...JFC!!
Hate to pile on, but JH does not play smart. She has "best player in high school" syndrome - she has been so much better, athletically, than others all her life that she never had to think much. Last 90 seconds of the game - she dribbled around and everyone else just stood there, equally clueless, letting 10 or so seconds run off. No one seemed to know what to do. I was expecting her to jack it up (and miss), which she did on the next sequence, or pass to Jada (not certain if she was still in the game), who would predictably lose the ball. We did the same thing against OU, but managed to win. No idea why they don't use their basketball brains in these situations, or talk to each other on court ... or pay attention to a million other details ... (Besides the obvious - they are 20 somethings with life and classes ... but I like to think they want to play well and win.)

Simply put Baylor is just a more athletic team than us. I was at the game and that was a great come back though. They have more speed and quickness which we are in dire need of. Sug is really the only player that could hang with the Baylor guards. The one thing that just irritates me to death is that we do not hedge on screens. I'm not sure if that is what they coach or that we are just not quick enough to get back on the pick and roll. Baylor played us high on the screens forcing us inside where they were getting the middle all game. K State did that to us as well and totally got us out of our game. Cox is to me the best player on that team. She should be the Big 12 MVP. She has great hands and seems to always be in the right place. Jatarie and Mide did a great job of keeping Kalani Brown from dominating us.

FTs and rebs, especially O-boards stick out.

Team chemistry, at its worst (it seemed much better tonight) reminds me of when I played on a softball team that usually lost. We knew that certain teammates would strike out, drop a fly ball or make a fielding error. So we accepted the inevitable and didn't get upset when these things occur.red. So I imagine that it's easy to mentally check out when a player misses a pass, fouls, makes a turnover ... because others just expect that person to do that. Oh well. (We played for fun and beer in a city league, though, not for UT and NCAA pride or scholarships.)

Glad we played better, saw some encouraging things happen.... but to answer your not-so-rhetorical question. Yep, she is. Coaches are always to blame, as are players. I don't see anyone cutting JH any kinda slack. The tone used to describe her in these threads is certainly not complimentary, mostly downright rude. Yet Karen's shortcomings have to be coated with sprinkles? It's sports. Everybody's to blame. You don't have to be a hater to point out areas of improvements for staff and players. Not sure why people get so triggered by opinions.

The outcome was an expected one even though it’s obviously very frustrating as a fan to continue to lose to a particular team. Maybe ONE DAY Coach Aston and the team will get the gorilla off their backs. Hopefully the coaching and play from the players continues to improve.

It was an extremely high compliment from her. And think about it. If TX would play with that kind of urgency all the time they would not have lost a single game this year.

I kept NOT understanding how Cox was NEVER boxed out..never saw a body on her..that was frustrating!!
She got boxed out at times but she's not one of the best rebounders in the league for nothing. Plus, one also has to worry about Brown is almost automatic when she gets an offensive rebound, whereas Cox does miss more often than Brown.

Does that mean we would have beaten you guys as well? :smile1:

Every game is a learning opportunity. Hopefully what they learned is how good they really could be if they decided to compete all out for a full 40 minutes. Hell, they could play like they normally do for the first two quarters and then kick it into gear for the second half and win everything. That 4th quarter hunger has to be there for more than just the final 10 mins.

Big Texas comeback no consolation after narrow loss to top-ranked Baylor | Hookem.com
“I don’t want to take anything away from Texas in the fourth quarter,” Mulkey said. “I know that effort they gave in the fourth quarter, Lordy mercy, if they play like that for four quarters, they’re not going to lose many games.”

Golden: Texas women should be elevated after tight loss to top-ranked Baylor | Hookem.com
Texas is what it is: A pretty good team that’s a little short on experience but solid enough to go a round or two in the postseason if the cards fall the right way. While no one ever wants to speak of moral victories, the result could be a galvanizing mechanism that could propel Texas (18-5, 8-3 Big 12) to better results moving forward.

Golden did make one mistake or maybe it's wishful thinking. A reader did correct him in the comments section, stating that only Brown was graduating as Cox is a junior.
the Bears’ two big girls will graduate.
