Texas v. UTRGV April 5, 2022

Should be a W for the team. But it's a big game for Eckhardt--he needs to really nail down that #4 starter spot. He's flashed some excellent stuff, but we need consistency and reliability. He will pitch some in the Regionals, and he needs to pitch well.

Projected starting pitcher for the Rio Grande Vaqueros:

MAX BALDERRAMA, JR.
RHP
6'1" 205 lbs
10.12 ERA
2.55 WHIP

12 Strikeouts
5 Walks

Balderrama is off to a lousy start this year, although he has pitched reasonably well earlier in his career. He's from Crosby, TX. Played catcher in high school. Converted to a pitcher in college. Fastball up to mid 90s per coach interview; fastball mostly lives in the low 90s; 86-87 mph slider.

Had arm surgery in the off season. Grad student. Hot-and-cold. Tends to have a really good game, or a really bad game. When he's on, he's on. And when he's off, he's reaaaaaalllllyyyyy off... Has terrible ERA and WHIP stats this year. Smart guy and diligent student who got his degree early. Over his first two seasons, he struck out 57 batters in 48 innings. Speculation--> putting this all together...he's just not the same since his injury and surgery; he's getting shelled this year.

Any word on Kennedy's hurt knee, and when he'll be back?

Austin Todd filled in very well last game, but it would be great to have Kennedy back.

I bet this new Valley pitcher has vowed not to cut his hair until they beat a Top 25 opponent.

6-1 us bottom of the 2nd.

Double play!!!!
Great diving grab by Daly!!!

6-1 us going into the bottom of the third.

That’s two fly balls dropped by Valley’s second baseman. Murph up. Infield single Murph. Drives Skye in from third!

7-1 BIG UT

:slidenana:

Double off the wall for Skye Messinger. Drives in Todd. 3-3 for the night for Messinger. Our Coloradan is batting in the 360s now.

9-3 us

EK was hit on the knee with that pitch in the OU game but it's a hamstring keeping him out of the lineup. I haven’t heard when he’s expected back

9-4 us in the 5th.

Eckhardt is gone. Well, he didn’t walk many batters…. Not a great outing, but not terrible. Something he can keep building on.

Enter Southard with his high 90s fastball heat and a slider.

Single RBI then a fly out. Got out of that jam only giving up one run. Gotta keep developing guys like Eckhardt.

Hmmmmmm

Not sure if coach sent Ivan home or if Ivan made that decision himself. Out at the plate.

More Three Stooges fielding comedy hour for Valley…

They’ve got some bats. But that defense is stinking the joint up…

I wonder if that is why our bullpen went to shiite when Witt went down - they all thought they were auditioning for his job?

Good to see Johnson get some game time. He took care of Valley’s batters in short order.
