Texas v Tech Game Three

Tech gets runner to third with one out on a HBP, stolen base and ground out but he is stranded there when Thornhill gets a pop up in the infield and a flyout.

Headed to bottom of first scoreless.

The second out Carter was running full bore with his back to the infield and made an over the shoulder catch.

The Tech runner at third could have easily tagged and scored, but for some reason didn't. Something about the Disch seems to cause strange base running.

Bottom One

Tech starter has ERA over 5 so he is hittable

Johnson Grounds out to second;
Stell flies out to right;
Weiss singles to right;
Payton with second straight single and runners now on first and second;
Hinojosa walks to load bases;
Marlow grounds out to first and Horns blow an early chance to take lead and establish the offense.

This is the big concern we have to get three hits in an inning to score.

My kingdom for a legit power hitter to bat cleanup.

Thornhill makes quick work of Tech in the second with a K, fly out and a second K. Headed to bottom of second 0-0.

Wow, that is Mike Withrow's kid on the mound for Tech.

I knew Mike well on those early 80's Texas teams when I was at UT. We had some good times back then with Spike Owen and the rest of the guys.

Boy am i getting old or what?

Bottom Two

Felts grounds out to third;
Carter draws full count walk;
Hall flies out to right;
JOHNSON HOMERS TO LEFT

Wind is blowing out and that definitely helped as off the bat it looked like a fly out.

Didnt realize that is same Withrow. A little before me as I came on campus at end of 80's and early 90's but I remember those early 80's teams and that run of an NC and two straight second places.

Stell K's to end inning. Two full done and Horns lead 2-0.

Editorial comment, I like the throwbacks on Sunday and Horns are in them again today.

Thornhill gives up a lead off single to left for Tech's first hit of game.

He K's the next batter but gives up a line drive infield single that Payton almost makes great play on.

Wild pitch moves both runners to scoring position.

Single scores a run and puts runners on corners with one out.

Safety squeeze scores the second run and ties game; runner on second with two outs.

Grounder to third ends inning but not before Tech ties it at 2.

Bottom Three

New pitcher for Tech Drozd, has an era over 3.

Weiss grounds it to first baseman for out;
Payton with slow grounder to pitcher who throws him out;
Hinojosa grounds to pitcher and is thrown out for third out.

Three full done 2-2.

Thornhill starts fourth with two straight K's then gets a fly out to left that center fielder catches for third out.

3.5 done tied at 2.

Bottom Four

Marlow K's on pitch that looked outside;
Felts grounds first pitch to short for second out;
Carter tries to bunt but grounds to pitcher on first pitch and is thrown out to end inning.

4 full done 0-0.

Augie interviewed between innings says that Thornhill has struggled and isnt commanding pitches he normally would.

Thornhill gets fly out to right, a K, and a grounder to first for quick 1-2-3 inning.

4.5 done tied 2-2.

Bottom Five

Hall with lead off single to right;
Johnson bunts him to second with SAC (insert rant here about free outs with bunt that take bat out of hands of only guy showing any power);
Stell grounds to third for second out, Hall advances on throw;
Weiss grounds to second to end inning stranding runner at third.

5 full done tied at 2.

Ok, Fw, I really thought Skip would have come and got Thornhill and brought Duke in to face that big lefty Poteet.

He has hurt us all series and does so again with a single to give Tech the lead 3-2 to the bottom of six.

Payton K's to start the inning for one away.
Hinojosa flies to center for out two.
Marlow with a little grounder to first for the third out.

Well that was a timid response to the Tech run.

Tech leads 3-2 after six.

Marlow in to pitch for the Horns in the seventh.
Hall kind of misjudges a deep drive to center after a ground ball out.
It's over his head and to the wall and it's a triple to put a man on
third with one away.

This is a big run to say the least, need to get out of this.
Here comes Skip and and here comes Duke out of the pen to
pitch.

Tech has already safety squeezed a run home today and look for maybe another one here.

Duke throws a pitch in the dirt and Felts can't block it and the wp plates the run..

Tech leads 4-2 and Felts is pissed at the Tech dugout and tempers flare and the umps break it up.

The batter then singles and puts on another runner.
Texas needs to respond with the bats.
Duke makes a nice play on a drag bunt for out two as the runner moves to second.

Here comes Skip again and Cox is coming in now to face the righty batter.

Cox gets out of the inning, but the damage is done.

Tech leads 4-2 to the stretch.

Can't wait long to get something started to get back in this one.

Felts grounds out to third for out #1.
Carter singles up the middle to put a man on and bring the tying
run to the plate.
Hall hits a flair to left center for a hit and the tying runs are on with one away.

Johnson with a comebacker to the mound and it could been an inning ending dp but the throw is to the first base side and the shortstop drops the throw to load the bases.

Stell hits another comebacker and this time it's a 1-2-3 dp to end the inning.

What a back breaker that is.

Tech still leads 4-2 after seven innings.
