Texas v. SFA April 12, 2022

DuPlantier will take the mound for the start. He's got some nasty breaking stuff, and was good before his injury. Let's hope he's shaken off those grand slams. Get back on that horse after you've been thrown off. Hoping for the best--we need a #4 starter. No trips to Denny's tonight!

Lumberjacks did not become Division 1 sports program until summer 2021. Don't think they had a baseball program until the 80's or later. Anyway I expect a Horns beatdown and nothing less!

Those of us who grew up in Texas tend to know a number of SFA folks. This is an alumni base I generally like. The stereotypes: Not quite as hard of partiers as the Texas State crowd, and arguably a bit more academically inclined. They prefer the pine trees to the hills. Still, if you want to get smashed frequently amidst the pine trees, and still walk away with a regionally marketable sheepskin in 4, 5, or 6 years...SFA's your place.

Now, I'm trying to be nice to this SFA baseball team, but frankly they've been pretty lousy this year. They're 10-21. TCU and RICE both skunked them. Tech set their program back 50 years. UTSA and La. Monroe both kicked their a$$. Simply put, this is not one of the Jacks' better baseball teams in recent years (or ever)... Of course, even the nation's top team can lose any game, but this is one game we'd better not lose. This is a good game to try to get DuP back on track, and to get some of the other lesser-used relievers more innings.

As of this post, SFA has not yet released who their starting pitcher will be. That's because they're still scrambling to find one who won't embarrass them.*
Kudelka, Emmons, and Todd were the 3 starting pitchers for SFA this past weekend, so we should not see them. Other guys who have started weekday games are: Parker (also a reliever), Boyett, Jaco, Mangus (also a reliever), Caple, and Dewberry. Connevey closes sometimes. Castilaw is a middle reliever. I'll see what I can find on them to post.

GO HORNS!!!
:ut::ut::ut:

*of course, now that I typed that, watch them shut us down and beat us 2-1 or something...

PEYTON PARKER
RHP
15.30 ERA
3.00 WHIP

7 strikeouts
6 walks

Parker is a third baseman who also pitches. Scouted in high school more as a 3rd baseman than as a pitcher. UTSA, Abilene Christian, and Sam Houston all absolutely shelled him.

Right-handed pitcher with long, loose arm action into high-3/4 release with quick arm speed and easy effort. Fastball sat 78-82 mph with late run. Breaking ball showed 11/5 shape with gradual break and near fastball arm speed at 65-66 mph.

SKYLER JACO
RHP
4.50 ERA
1.11 WHIP
15 strikeouts
1 walk

Now here's a competent pitcher with some decent numbers, and really good control. Jaco is from Amarillo. Fastball in the mid-80s in high school--likely up to the high 80s now.

Skyler Jaco, RHP, Bushland, 2020
Uncommitted. At an estimated 6-foot, 160-pounds right-handed pitcher, athletic, wiry-strong frame that is likely to add strength with continued growth. Was very sharp in playoff game versus Shallowater, one of the better arms in the area of the 2020 class. Quick, clean, long and loose arm stroke, ¾ arm slot. Deliberate, athletic, repeatable delivery. Fastball comes out at 82-84, touching 85 occasionally, with arm-side run. Flashed a slider with + movement at 73-76. Curveball showed more of a slurve shape at 70-73, was able to use both pitches to keep a solid Shallowater lineup off-balance. Finished his day going 7.0 IP, 10K, 5H, 2R.

The Jacks had better hope Jaco is good for a lot of innings. Some of the pitchers we are likely to see have horrendous numbers.

When I was a student there we called SFA "Land of Tall Women & Virgin Pines" ;)

Furthermore my friends frequently teased and sometimes ridiculed me about being a BIG fan of UT and a little fan of SFA.... always responded UT is family legacy... I stumbled and followed a girlfriend to SFA :(

Go Horns! :bevo:

This game is a good opportunity to get DuPlantier back on track, and also get guys like Stewart and Blair some experience. Assuming our bats light up the scoreboard early and often, and I think they will.

I keep saying it, and I really do believe it based on what I've seen of his wicked, nasty, freakish slider/breaking stuff, plus his upper 90s fastball velocity--WITH MOVEMENT, but Stewart may one day be a superstar. In the mid-term (1-2 years), he might become the next Aaron Nixon. He needs experience, consistency, and control. A game against this year's SFA team is the perfect place for him to get some.

Jaco - 4.50 ERA? Not exactly stellar in my book.

I smell a 13-2 Horns win....
Yeah, he'd be bottom half here, but some of their guys we're likely to see have 10.00 + ERAs--and that's pitching against teams like U. La. Monroe, Tarleton, ACU, Rice, etc. On edit: Jaco's WHIP is pretty good.

Lots and lots of SFA, Texas State, SHSU, UTA students and alums are big UT fans. :hookem3::hookem3::hookem3:
From what I've seen, Tarleton folks historically tended to lean A&M, but that may be changing.

It is too late to be experimenting with pitching. Duplantier, Blair etc all had ample opportunity and the got shelled. We can’t afford to lose a gimme, either. I don’t see them as any answer in the tournament in my opinion.
We need to be a top 8. This team isn’t good enough to go on the road on a Super and win a series.

Normally agree. But this year's SFA team may be sooooooooo bad, that we could suffer multiple grand slams and still beat them.

This may be in the category of saving the good pitchers for the weekend vs endorsing these guys.

Look at it from the flip-side. What a perfect game for Murph, Ivan, and Faltine to all hit grand slams!

Thanks, Chop. As if I needed to feel any older, you have to post the stats on Boyette, whose father was close friends with my brother-in-law when he was at SFA. His grandparents owned a jewelry store on the square

Well, if and when you have grandsons pitching for OU, A&M, UC-Berkeley, and/or Miami, I'll be sure and post their stats when they play us...

I was a student there in '75-76, a forestry major. I went to a couple of rush events, the last one being a PKE social. About 10 mins in I was certain they weren't going to extend a pledge invitation to some long-haired dude wearing cut-off jeans and a Lone Star Beer t-shirt. Walking back to the freshman dorm I could hear a bluegrass band playing, it was a few guys in the old duplexes that used to be by the dorms. After a couple of hours of beers and bluegrass, they decided to put together a painty raid over at the girl's twin towers. Good times, but I had some growing up to do and that wasn't the place to do it.

I’m watching on replay/delayed. Nice solo Homerun deep over the center field fence by Ivan. He drilled Parker Posey’s pitch for some 450 feet.
