Texas v. Baylor April 22-24, 2022

The Horns are home for what may well be a season defining series with the Bears as they fight to stay relevant in the Big XII and in the national picture. Texas sits three games back of Oklahoma State but gets the Cowboys at home later this year and the Horns also still have a series with WVU who sits ahead of them in the standings. Texas still basically controls its own destiny but the Horns can't have anymore lost weekends and Tristan Stevens absolutley has to find the form he had last year and the first few weeks of this year.

PROBABLE PITCHING MATCHUPS
FRIDAY–
Texas LHP Pete Hansen (6-1, 2.78) vs. Baylor RHP Will Rigney (2-1, 4.42)
SATURDAY–Texas RHP Tristan Stevens (4-4, 4.37) vs. Baylor LHP Kobe Andrade (3-1, 3.20)
SUNDAY–Texas LHP Lucas Gordon (3-1, 2.74) vs. Baylor LHP Tyler Thomas (4-3, 1.97)

Note how they start their best pitcher on Sunday. Interesting. I bet Gordon will be more than good enough to take him on.

Batting:
- Baylor is 7th in the Big 12 in team batting average, batting 0.271
- Baylor is 5th in the Big 12 in runs scored with 239 (we're 2nd with 306 scored)
- Baylor is last in the Big 12 in home runs with 25 (we've hit 64) -- this is important, as giving up the long ball seems to be one of our biggest pitching weaknesses.
- We have 3 of the top 10 batters in the Big 12 by batting average (Murph - 0.420, Ivan - 0.387, and Messinger - 0.350); they don't have any batters at all in the top 25 in the Big 12.

Pitching:
- Baylor is 5th in the Big 12 in team ERA at 4.74 (we're first at 4.05)
- Baylor is 5th in the Big 12 in runs allowed at 200 (we're now 4th at 174--thanks a lot Air Force...)

Fielding:
- Baylor is 7th in the Big 12 at 0.971
- We're tied for 1st in the Big 12 at 0.983

Sooooooo...by the numbers, we beat them 8.573 times out of 10 (not really--I just pulled that one out of a crevace...:beertoast:)

Throws some heat with a mid 90s fastball. Good slider, but he tips it off according to some scouts. Big tall guy with a down angle on the pitch. Career plagued by the injury bug.

Big and projectable pitcher's build. Full hands over head delivery, has good rhythm to his mechanics and is low effort until release, 3/4's extended arm slot, can use his lower half better. Fastball topped out at 94 mph [in high school] and sat at 93 for most of the outing, more velocity in there, could end up as a very hard thrower, fastball mostly straight at this point. Hand position slider, will occasionally tip it in his glove, developed confidence and feel for the slider the more he used it. Power pitcher's approach at present. Good student, verbal commitment to Baylor.

Here's what the Florida Marlins think about him: 6-foot-6 power armed righty out of Waco, Texas ... Recovering from thoracic outlet surgery but has been up 95 MPH while flashing a plus slider. Long injury history but considerable upside.

His dad played baseball (catcher) at Baylor in the early 90s. He's majoring in risk management and insurance (sounds like actuarial studies???), so you can bet he knows his way around a stat sheet.

Andrade throws his fastball in the low-90s, and has good control over his breaking pitches. A crafty control pitcher. Was scouted a fair amount as a batter in high school. He threw a complete gain against Kansas, so he can go the distance, and he didn't pitch too awfully against #1 Tennessee. Kobe transferred up the Brazos from A&M.

Now here's an excellent college pitcher. 5th year Senior, Tyler Thomas is on fire. He's Baylor's staff ace. By the numbers, he's the best pitcher in the Big 12. He'll go Sunday against Gordon (the 3rd best pitcher in the Big 12 with a 2.74 ERA). Thomas throws a fastball in the high 80s and low 90s with excellent control, and a very good changeup (that he uses frequently--sounds like Gordon), plus multiple breaking balls including a tight slider--although at least one scout isn't all that impressed with his curveball. This is just the sort of crafty guy that we have for our 3 weekend starters. He keeps the hitter guessing. A true pitcher, not just a thrower. He doesn't light up the radar gun, but he gets the job done better than anyone in the league.

Per scout Dave Seifert: He has a shoulder tilt delivery with a high front side. He struggled to get back over his front side and get the ball down in the zone. His fastball ranged from 87-91 mph. Also mixed in a 81 mph small-breaking, tight slider and a 74-76 mph below average curveball.

Looking forward to this series. It’s definitely an interesting year with lots of drama, but still a lot of baseball left and will only make the run sweeter if indeed they make a deep run.

looking for stevens to pull out of his slump and the standard bullpen guys to do their jobs this weekend, time to get back on track.

I'm looking at that Game 3, when the top pitcher in the Big 12 takes the mound against Gordon (the #3 pitcher in the Big 12). Our bats need to catch fire. Now they haven't played Tech yet--the only offense in the conference better than ours. So, aside from maybe Tennessee, they really haven't seen a batting lineup like this before.

2-1, or better yet, a sweep would sure be good.

So was it Ken Starr, or David Koresh, that got you a bit squeamish...?

:beertoast:

Mount Carmel fire photo made me LOL at first, then I kind said in my mind that is NOT something I should find humor in.....

Absolutely crucial series and must at least take it 2-1.

Chop, the Mount Carmel photo set me off, and I won't go into the politics of it, but will assert it should NEVER have occurred, didn't have to occur, and the feds should have all been placed under the jail.

Yeah, Koresh really threw law enforcement a nasty CURVE BALL—after the feds BALKED at the Rangers’ suggestions. He didn’t need to go 95MPH back to his compound, he could just WALK. The feds sure STRUCK OUT in that initial raid, they were SWINGING FOR THE FENCES to take them down in one fell swoop. Koresh wasn’t leaving the compound after he was CALLED OUT. He just had to CHANGE UP his usual routine. After all those sleepless nights, Koresh probably could have used some RELIEF. For the price of the raid and siege, the govt could probably have bought a new mid-rise building or a half dozen Coast Guard CUTTERS.

It looked like Baylor’s starting pitcher reinjured himself. So Baylor’s been stringing together relievers. And we’ve been shelling them!

And a good play by Daly. How bout that Longhorn fielding! Tied for first in the conference.

Pete works his way out of a man on third. No runs for them in the 4th.

To the bottom of the 4th.

6-1 us
