Texas v. Alabama February 25-27, 2022

Horns win 1-0. Bama left bases loaded in top of 8th and stranded a runner at third in the top of the ninth.

Not at all happy with the bullpen pitching tonight. WAY too many baserunners allowed (6 total, 3 in one inning) in 4 innings, getting behind in the count, throwing fastballs out of the zone.
I hope Stehle, Southard, and Nixon improve on that.

We probably got outplayed tonight - at best it was a push. Bama's starter was solid, then the bullpen gave us a run. Our pitching did just enough at the critical times. I'll take the W.

I disliked the chirping from Faltine on the HBP. It was one of those lazy breaking balls that you turn your shoulder and let it plunk you. No need for getting riled up - just take your base.

It was a miserable 38 or 39 degrees for most of the game, hardly baseball weather. It was a good win, requiring some mental toughness. I hope the team can remember this game when they are sweating it out through some challenging moments in Omaha in June. Oh wait, did I just jinx us? :smile1:

I'm not sure you can make any future preditions from a game like this. Take it from someone who's done some pitching, not college level, but plenty of lower level, throwing the ball with numb fingers is very different than throwing on an 80 deg day. Yes, it should affect all the same, but who knows??

We also for sure would've had 2 hr's on a normal spring day with a slight southerly wind. Bama probably would've had 1.

But I did say it may not be as easy when we don't get all the free gifts from the other team.

While it’s good to get the win, can’t get too upset if they lose a series, it might happen. 2002 or 2005, we lost three straight games to Kansas!!! I thought, dang, we just aren’t that good, but we went on to win the national championship in June so take any losses with a grain of salt, they learn from those too. In fact I would be worried if we haven’t had a lot of adversity going into the playoffs.

Haven't been able to watch any of the games yet but it seems that our pitching is going to keep us in a lot of games. Six games in and most of the scores have the opponents at or near 0.

If this plays through for the year we are going to be a tough out.

Really excited about this year. Pitching wins you championships.
And the one game where the opponent scored 4, all were unearned, and we limited them to a total of 2 hits on the night.

I just watched the rest of it on a recording.

1-0
What a great pitchers duel.
Sounds like the score of an early 80s Astros vs Cardinals game at the Dome or Busch.

Hansen was excellent again.
Sthele has established himself as the first go-to guy out of the pen for middle relief.
Southard had a rough time, but he threw some pitches on the corners that sure looked like strikes, but we’re not called that way. The loud groaning from the fans confirms others also saw it this way.
Nixon is Nixon. He’ll make it exciting at times, but will ultimately mow them down on most outings.
For Bama—McMillan was a master of control and hitting the corners, as advertised. Ray had that one wild inning that cost them with two past balls—the difference in the game.
Per the readily available previews and scouting, I think their other starting pitchers are a pretty fair drop off from McMillan.

Deep fly balls just sort of hanged—nothing was going out of the park yesterday with the near freezing temp. Melendez laughed it off on his deep fly ball—-“That one’s supposed to go out of the park…!?!?!?!”

Man, reading a couple posts in this thread you'd think we lost last night. I was there layered up with blankets. I was right behind the Texas dugout and couldn't hardly see the plate because of a dang camera mounted to the dugout. There seemed to be one particular pitch I couldn't figure out coming in right at the knees that we took all night long causing us to be behind in almost every at bat. Anyone know what that was?

There were at least three Texas bombs that would have been HR's had the conditions been different. One Melendez hit might have gone to the tennis facility. I can't tell you how high and hard hit it was, but I guarantee the wind took off 50 -75 feet before being caught at the warning track. There were also a couple lasers hit that they fielded perfectly.

I'm happy we won but by the start of the 7th inning I was wondering how we would ever score. Thankfully some wild pitches saved us.

was their pitching just that good?
McMillan was a Dutch Master painting the corners (as was Pete Hansen). IMHO, the Ump established a wide left-to-right strike zone (for both teams), then really narrowed it down late in the game (for both teams). Our crowd seemed to booooooooo an awful lot of corner strikes that were called balls late in the game.

Ardoin sets up, and frames the ball really well—which can make a difference.

Stevens has pitched 5 innings with no runs. Another good outing. He’s hitting the corners and getting some nice drop on the ball. Bama’s
batters are making him work for it. Fairly high pitch count. I bet he goes for one more inning.

2-0 Horns

Harrison looked good in relief that inning. (7th)
And again in the 8th

He’s a good pitcher , just never gets much of an opportunity to pitch which happens to a lot of the pitchers on the pitching staff!
It’s a well know fact that Texas doesn’t do a lot in the way of pitcher development!
